With the sub rule we need to limit the amount of players whom are one dimensional, and I expect we need at least 17 of the 22 who can rotate through the midfield effectively and play either forward or back, which means there might be a few on our list who need to become more flexible and less one dimensional, or need to do a lot more in their position to secure a spot.

These need to add more :

Taylor only Forward
Browne only midfield
McGuanne only Back
Thursty only Back
Moore only Back

Whilst I suspect possible starting midfielders, Foley, Jackson and Martin will be used more forward and back.

The two who are on our list that have not shown any form, or been tried back or in the midfield , rightfully are Reiwoldt and Griffiths .

Thoughts ?

Taylor already played wing. Looks as if they have a Goodes role in mind for him.

I was thinking about this the other day, looking at our team and the likelihood we'll take even more mids, we're building a team of large midfielders who can swing back and forward. I like it.

i dont think it important that your kpps cant play elsewhere good if they can.

its the flankers that this is true about.

its been often argued by many me included that its best to draft mids and give them specific roles either forward or back far easier to do this and far more effective than drafting flankers and trying to turn them into mids.

ablett chapman are great examples of mids who play effectively forward. corey enright kelly ling all mids all perform roles elsewhere. i reckon its a part of the reason why they are so consistent and damaging. how often do you see flankers like milne davis medhurst stokes etc totally taken out of games.

McGaunne has been tried forward , I personally wouldn't say with great success . The 7 of the 22 whom may not be as flexible in other positions, and not play through the midfield would most likely be 2 KPD , 2 KPF and a tallish forward / back swingman .
Although many think that Astbury and Gourdis will most likely will be our KPD's by 2011 seasons end , 1 of these appears most likely to be used predominately as our swingman , whilst I hope our 2nd ruckman is Post who has also been tried back and forward .
It realistically leaves 1 spot for McGaunne, Thursty , Moore or a developing type like Grimmes ( although I think he could also be swung forward if needed ) , to be a permanent back.
If you pick a side on flexibility , a player like Jacko will be in more trouble than a player like Tuck, who has shown the ability to play back and pinch hit off a forward flank .

This is why I'm hoping we take a few more midfielder types that are in the 185-190cm bracket. Sick of watching players that top out at 180cm trying to take on opposition players that are 2-3 inches taller.

Mcguane & Thursfield can both play forward. Unfortunately they are just not that good at it because both have goal kicking deficiencies.

Exactly , anyone can play anywhere it just a matter of whether they can play there effectively , and at AFL level Thursty and McGaunne haven't been effective as a forward !!

agree wholeheartedly. geez id like a dollar for every time ive argued the size issue over recent yrs.

had huge debate with some over the number of smalls we drafted last yr. but its not height thats been the main issue ( though ive argued we have not taken enough talls for yrs now)but size combined with quality.

an example of what im going on about is tuck and jackson. while recognising we need to play both because of a dearth of big bodies to me its been a double edged sword and folly to have both in the midfield because of the lack of quality and mediocrity these players bring to the table.
i still cant see how we can play both jackson and tuck in the one team and improve the quality .
personally i think tuck a better player than jackson.
hopefully with martin grigg, foley back, morton going to a wing. we can finally look at playing just one of these blokes.
to be fair to the club size is one area that is being addressed in a round about way.some of the kids have huge potential to be big.

i know you think we need a genuine sized fb with skill and i agree watson would be nice but it wont happen another top 15 pick would have been nice.
gourdis offers us if nothing else atm size and pace and i think he can dominate in the air as well. at 193cm 93kg and growing and with a frame suggests he can get much bigger without detracting from pace agility leap.
im an advocate of the postman to play chb hes already 195cm and 94kg. will slowly from here on in get bigger has agility is good in the air and moves really well.
these two are types who give great structure down back put deledio at 188cm 88kg grigg at 190 85 moore at 190 86 dea at 186 83 and growing throw in the token small in newman 183 84 or farmer 181 80 and the backline structurally is looking more like geelong than the vic park u12s that we have looked like in recent yrs.

anyway im getting to positive cant have that now time to go.

There is a reason to get excited Claws, we're finally starting to build a side that will be able to compete when the heat is on come finals.

agree again i think the most relevant word is starting. we have a ways to go but we are heading in the right direction.

ya know this is a midfielders thread but overall i would like to see us target two ruckmen. one who is ready to play perhaps one out of vfl sanf wafl, and the other nd rookie. that fb we have spoken of. another kpf around 22 24 to go with miller and from there just go mids.

it is likely 6 29 will be mids from there we need to think about needs just a little depending on whats around.
