How's the next Judd going?

This board is like no other when going early on players with ridiculous player comparisons.

I didn't realise Dodoro posted here as it was he who labelled him thus. The rest just rehashed it.

Because no team is going to be stupid enough to let him do it. He needs more than that trick (as does our team).

Personally I don't have a big issue with throwing him around a bit next year. He may not be able to play up in the midfield but the reward if it pays off would be substantial. Agree on a poster a couple back, I think he's much more likely to be successful in proper traffic (hit contests hard and fast) rather than as a receive / disposal player.

In the other part of my post that you didn't quote I wrote that I thought he'd be better as an inside mid pretty much for those reasons. So yeah, I agree with you....and myself

Wow. That might be the most self congratulating w***erish thing I've ever posted

Had some decent games and had some uninfluencial games

Don't think he is "that" bad

He isn't. He's a decent contributor - if taken as a rookie i'm sure would be wrapped.

Problem is that on early very impressive displays and talked up as a future jet he simply hasn't improved near the rate some (including me) have hoped for.

Tailed off to just a pretty ordinary player now. Hope that changes to become a jet if released to a different role (I hope so, but doubt it).

Ha ha, yeah saw that. Didn't mean to ignore it just wanted to reply to the first bit in particular. If it makes you feel better I loves ya.

Ken Oath. If it doesn't happen this year, it ain't happening.
Atley should have become a 'game breaker' two, three, hell even four years ago. He's spent six seasons in the system so he's fully developed athletically. Unless something happens mentally what we've seen is what we'll get- a 'role player'.

Also he's been trialled in the midfield many a preseason. Safe to say he didn't meet the requirements then so why will he adapt now?

You're probably right. He's good enough as it stands to have a reasonable career. I guess we've all just wanted him to be more then a role player.

The first post in this thread (thanking Hawthorn for giving us Bastinac and Atley (plus being able to pick up Harper) for Gibson and "Hales") is SERIOUSLY depressing reading with the benefit of hindsight

Needs to become more of a game breaker and less of a role player....

Shaun's in his mid 20's, We would have seen it by now.

He doesn't have it talent wise and he doesn't work hard enough to better himself. We saw a dominate, quick U18 midfield kid with Judd comparisons......we were fooled.

I personally believe he has the talent, his kicking lets him down. He shows it occassionally but not often enough. I also believe he is one of the hardest workers at the club, hard work on the track and in the gym doesn't always equate to on field improvement.

I personally believe he is let down by his lack of belief in himself, he doesn't have the confidence to back his speed and strength to break tackles. Sells himself into trouble too often when he could use his speed to get out. That hesitatation has stopped him from taking it to the next level. Some of that is issue is atley's fault but it is also partly that of the clubs with his lack of devlooment

There will be more asked of him this year. He will need to take on some responsibility as one of the more experienced players on game day. This could see him forced to be more proactive onfield. Im still a believer.

Hes not even 24 yet. Maturity hits at different times and i think this may be a tough year that could ultimately make/break quite a few of our players.

SHAUN Atley's long-touted move into North Melbourne's midfield finally looks likely to happen this season.

Atley has been a mainstay of North's defence since his second season, 2012, with the Roos utilising his explosive speed for rebound and to quell dangerous opposition small forwards.

The former Murray Bushranger spent considerable time in the midfield during his junior days, prompting speculation over recent years that his AFL future ultimately lied there.

As Atley prepares for his seventh season, that mooted move looks set to become a reality.

The 24-year-old has trained with the Kangaroos' midfield group for most of this pre-season and impressed on a wing in full-ground match practice at Arden St on Monday.

North's defence looks well placed to cope if Atley moves up the ground. Former Magpie small defender Marley Williams has enjoyed a strong first pre-season with the Roos, while medium backmen Ed Vickers-Willis and Mitch Hibberd are expected to press hard for regular senior opportunities in 2017.

The Kangaroos can also call on experienced backmen Luke McDonald, Jamie Macmillan, Sam Wright and Aaron Mullett, meaning competition for spots among North's small and medium defenders is set to be fierce.

The Roos trained for nearly three hours on Monday, with players rotating between skills work and interval running after completing their match practice.

Former Western Bulldog Nathan Hrovat was lively in attack during game simulation and looks a strong chance to make his North debut in round one against West Coast.

Although he was competing against category B rookie Tom Jeffries in the absence of No.1 ruckman Todd Goldstein, Braydon Preuss impressed in the ruck.

Preuss finished the 2016 VFL season in strong form and has carried that momentum into the pre-season, with the 206cm Queenslander keeping Goldstein honest on the training track this summer.

Third-year tall Sam Durdin looked composed in defence on Monday and has taken significant strides this summer as he eyes a senior debut.

Others to impress in match practice included new captain Jack Ziebell, Shaun Higgins, Kayne Turner, Mason Wood, Lindsay Thomas and Ryan Clarke.

First-year key defender Declan Watson was handed the tough job on veteran spearhead Jarrad Waite and competed hard.

Scott Thompson, Goldstein, Macmillan, Wright, Majak Daw, Ben Brown, Ben Jacobs, Ben McKay and Taylor Garner were among those who trained away from North's main group on Monday.

Hallelujah. Been wasted at half back. Was never a back flanker in the first place been saying it for years. About bloody time. Watch him have a massive year.
