this thread should be called how to lose a premiership in 30 mins

the last quarter is just like a horroe movie

north had only kicked 3 goals till the last change

To be fair North spent the first three quarters trying to lose it. If Briedis had kicked straight they would have been in front at 3/4 time anyway. Where we really lost it was on the wing two weeks earlier when Phil Carman whacked Michael Tuck.

I was in a boozer last night and watched the 1977 grand final draw, first time I've seen it since sitting in the middle deck of the Western stand as a boy.
Fair to say i hadn't wanted to see it again, much like those who were at 1970 have been traumatised by it, but i couldn't look away.
Things of note:
North really could have won if not for some of the worst goal kicking ever seen. Shots going on the full by 30 metres.
It looked to be very windy, something I'd forgotten, which partly explains the kicking.
The umpiring. Just diabolical interpretation of what is a mark or holding in a contest.
We loved Ronnie Wearmouth but he just didn't get enough of the ball as a first rover. Ray Shaw on the other hand was terrific.
Graeme Anderson didn't do enough for a player of his ability and Gerald Betts really struggled when he came on.
North had a couple of shockers too. Gary Cowton, good grief. But Cable Blight and Alves were all class. Damn North and their brown paper bags.
Finally saw what Doug Gott was talking about at cricket, where his head hangs off the back of the stretcher as he's carted off. If only we had David Dench to come in for him instead of Chris Perry.
Hard to say how Phil would have gone. Probably better than Kink and Twiggy at half forward, but the game was so frenetic with players being swamped in marking contests, it would have been hard for him to show his brilliance.
So many pies fans in the crowd shots. I hope most were still there 13 years later. The cheer squad going off in a strange position on the northern stand flank i think, and thousands of Collingwood members cheering from the top deck of the northern.
Dunne and Thommo were mighty in their efforts, despite both being clearly exhausted.
So it was good to watch again, if obviously a bit disappointing.

My first live grand final. Came down from Sydney with Glenn Coleman who was being courted by several VFL clubs at the time. Missed the replay as we were on our end of season footy trip. Was in standing room and feeling the cold while people in the sunlight 10 feet in front of us were wearing singlets and shorts.

Yeah, it appears quite warm and the field was bone dry. Add to that players like Schimmelbusch and Barham lining up on each other and the game was played at crazy speed with constant turnovers.
Even the mighty Wayne Richardson along with Phil Manassa committed some horrible kicks going forward.
Also Magro and Robbie Hyde ( i presume that was him in 38 ) were fantastic.

Glen Coleman always looked like an angry man when I was younger watching him at Footscray

He was 15 when he debuted in our team and he was scared of absolutely no-one. Growing up in Green Valley you had to be tough to survive.

Fair bump of a thread after 13 years 😀. Although Twiggy kicked the leveller, he did miss the first shot in last quarter. Who knows if we kicked that if we would have broken them. And Bond streaming down the wing as the siren went. Another 10 seconds would've been nice though it was a scrubby kick.

I remember seeing a sad Tommy sitting in the box, with Ron, still and silent, as q4 unfolded, and in contrast the Roos box was more peopled and animated. Made me feel quite sorry for Tommy, thinking he needed some help.

Twiggy's mark was incredible, looked like a forest of arms on the ball and somehow he claimed it, and kicked a punt, high and far, from 25 metres.

Carmen, why hit Tuck, of all people? Surely Scott would have been a more likely target?

Has a team in ANY Australian rules competition ever gone from wooden spooners to premiers in one season?

That Tommy was so close must and did break his heart.

To achieve that at Collingwood would have him as the greatest coach of all time without question on top of his Richmond achievements and his very competitive side at Sydney.

And to think Collingwood went one better in 2017 / 2018 ...

... from 13th place to almost winning a GF the next season.

South Adelaide went from last (of 8 teams) in 1963 to SANFL Premiers in 1964 (10 teams).
It's probably happened a fair few times at lower levels over the years e.g.:

It was an amazing mark because for some reason the North players went for the mark as well instead of punching from behind as they'd done most of the day. Was also a great umpiring decision by i think Ian Robinson.
I've read comments on the internet that Tuck did something to Phil earlier in that game, but never seen any evidence of what it was.

in 1916, Fitzroy finished last yet won the flag in the same year. Helped by the fact there was only 4 clubs because of the war!
Yes, if people thought 2020 was a crazy season it really had nothing on 1916! The decision to let all 4 teams play finals that year was a very strange one! Until fairly recently, the AFL considered Fitzroy to have "won" both the wooden spoon and the Premiership that year, but Richmond are now officially classed as the wooden spoon team.

Thanks for that, hadn't realised they had awarded the spoon to them.

Just checked, and in the 2002 AFL Season Guide Fitzroy are recorded as collecting the 1916 spoon, but from 2003 onward (in the Season Guide's) it's Richmond. So obviously they decided to change that around 2002-03. I can't remember there being any fuss made over it, so perhaps they kept it quiet so as not to annoy the Tigers' fans! It's certainly a debatable decision.

It is an interesting discussion. On the one hand the wooden spoon is decided at the end of the H&A season so it should be Fitzroy while on the other its odd to have the wooden spooner also winning the flag. I also don't remember any talk on this.
