Anyone else think the 1990 Collingwood premiership team was/is highly overrated? I mean come on, Hawthorn was a far superior outfit that year, just decimated by injuries. The Pies were a team of honest battlers - nothing more, nothing less

If Hawthorn had both Dunstall & Brereton fit all year they would have coasted to the premiership, yet again.

I just checked your profile and you were ten in 1990. Care to tell us all what you remember about that season and why you think the Pies were lucky? By 1990 the Hawks were in serious decline and pinched the flag the following year from an Eagles outfit that had won 19 games in 1991 and would go onto win the flag in 1992.
Collingwood benefitted from having a draw with the Eagles during the finals but proved themselves the best team on the day that matters the most, Grand Final Day. The way Collingwood played on the first Saturday in October, no team would have beaten them.

If Sumich could kick straight it never would have come to that. Clearly, as I said earlier, it was a poor year for football...Libba wins the Brownlow, Longmire the Coleman and Tony Shaw, of all people, was adjudged BOG in the Grand Final. Worst Norm Smith medallist in history and that includes the following year's recipient.

Most Premiers need a bit of luck during the year. Had Nick Davis not kicked a goal against Geelong with seconds to go the Swans would have been eliminated this year. Libba's Brownlow was a bit of a shock but when you lay as many tackles a game as he did you are bound to be noticed by the Umpires. Lonmire kicked 98 goals that year and in the final round booted 2 goals 8 behinds as North tried to get him to the ton that day. John Longmire was a very good Full Forward until he did his knee in 1996. Tony Shaw was clearly the best player on the ground in 1990 and thus deserved his Norm Smith. Not too many duds get to play 300 games, win a Norm Smith and captain a Premiership side.

Scott Russell was BOG that day in my opinion...as for Longmire, Lockett & Dunstall (2 greatest full-forwards in history) missed a lot of games - enough said. Longmire was mediocre at best. Hawthorn deserved to win that year which would have made it four on the trot.

Drivel. Hawthorn did not "deserve" to do any such thing. You lost your last two matches (Round 22 and the Elimination Final) to Melbourne IIRC.

I'm not sure why you feel the need to denigrate the premiership team of 1990. I certainly don't think they were the greatest team of all time by any stretch of the imagination, but they were the best team that year and were the premiers. Nothing else matters.

Could've, would've, should've, but didn't.

Darren Millane won the AFLPA MVP that year, and Graham Wright should've won the Brownlow over Tony Liberatore.

Guys like McGuane, Francis, Russell, Brown and Daicos were all brilliant at what they do that year.

The fact that you call Tony Shaw the worst Norm Smith medallist in history just shows that you're a straight up idiot.

Peeuuu! The troll stench is especially strong on the Collingwood board this morning.

That's about the only thing you've said which I agree with.

Other than that, she was a two horse race between the Bummers and the Mighty Magpies, and we timed our run to perfection.

In 1991, we could argue we gifted you a flag by being too hungover!

hmmm, so ur saying a fully fit lockett and dunstall would have reduced the number of goals kicked by longmire that year?? im assuming so coz thats wthe only way they may have beaten him... 98 goals is massive son, get a clue

Didn't you know? There is a limit to how many goals can be kicked in a season, if Dunstall and Lockett had played then they would have used up some of Longmire's quota

Geez that is compelling arguement.

*Sending email to the AFL to give the Hawks the 1990 Premiership, as they clearly deserved it!*

You honestly expect to come onto the Collingwood board and expect our supporters to say that we are overrated and didn't deserve it?

Hawthorn had injuries that year. So what? We could go through every year and make excuses for every team. Collingwood had its fair amount of misfortune over the years (Carmen's suspension, that contentious out of bounds), so it was about time the football Gods smiled on us. We had a very good year to finis 2nd, had a good top range of players and decent hardworking back-ups. The way we played in the last 3 finals, no one was going to beat us.

How do you know that? We had the double chance, and a loss against West Coast woudl not have ended our season.

We went in to the finals with the best form of any team , and played four outstanding finals games including three huge wins. The West Coast draw was of a very high standard. Sumich's miss was a dose of luck that evaded us for the previous thirty two years, but even if we lost that game we still would have been a big chance to win the flag.
