Or maybe we just don't have to compare them at all either? Just be happy Wright is performing well.

Not directed at you Eth.
I agree. I'm very happy with Peter. I hate it when I see the Daniher comparison

The only similarity between Wright and Daniher is the role they play (key forward and back up ruck).

That is where it ends. Different kinds of players, with different strengths and weaknesses and clearly a difference in their peak output to this point of their careers.

Lloyd level accuracy.
If he threw the grass up to check the wind at Colonial Stadium, I think we would ALL lose it.

Thought our use of Wright was strange.

Would have planted him 20 out from goal when we were kicking with the Wind.
Agree. Using Wright as a decoy for Waterman seemed a bit odd. Happy to see Alec snag a couple of majors and could have 1 or 2 more. Probably good we have different people bobbing up each week. Makes us harder to plan against.

But surely Baldwin comes in for Wright now...

I think we were just trailing things, as we most likely had the game in the bag.
There were some strange positioning things, we used Merrett and Redman differently yesterday too.

At different times we had Zerrett and Shiel playing off half back, Waterman as our deepest forward, and i think Durham and Guelfi were playing as pressure forwards deep at stages.

All that to say i think once the game was in hand, we were throwing the magnets around quite a bit. Probably as a test run in the case it is needed later.

I agree though, Wright was used rather peculiarly at times.

Different sort of game this week with the GC having almost their whole team in defense at times. They double and triple teamed him all afternoon. He is good when he can get a one on one but his weakness is he is not overly strong for a big bloke and can get knocked of the line if they play two on him.
We need to find a way to keep him isolated as much as possible as he marks or draws a free kick a decent percentage of the time when we get him a clear one one.

If he has to play the decoy some weeks I don’t think that’s really too much of a problem – we’ve had 4 blokes kick 5 or more this year and several more that will get on the end of 2-3.

They can’t keep them all down at once and I think that’s ultimately better than having all our eggs in one basket.

That said, might be worth him spending the summer in the boxing gym…

He made a nice tap from a marking content to Striger (?) for one of his goals.

Thought they banned boxing?

True but I am not looking at all eggs in one basket. I am looking at isolating him as much as possible but I have also been strong on clearing out the forward line as much as possible so the likes of Jones and Francis have space to lead At some stage they all have to be the decoy. What we did on Sunday , particularly the first quarter was not decoy but just kick it to him with 2 or 3 players on him.

Brereton nailed him; play him deep, kick it within 10-20m of him, let him use his reach to advantage.

Jones is a very high IQ leading forward, the last thing he needs is Wright lumbering around CHF getting in the way when he doesn't need to.

It was a strange contrast given they basically played him out of true FF last week when he kicked 7, then totally changed his role for the GCS game.

Seems to be a common occurrence with a lot of these 200cm type forwards.

Daniher, Hipwood, Wright, King x 2 and Brown all struggle when having to body up smaller opponent who have a lower centre of gravity. The upside is if they get good delivery on the move they are very hard to spoil with their reach and athleticism.

Harry McKay stands out as a guy who has the physical attributes to dominate in all aerial contests.

Has been a pleasent surprise.

Even costing a bag of chips I was sceptical about the pickup but he has been good in his role and works with Draper.

Where does this leave Bryan.

If he did not have to carry the ruck in some games while Draper was out I suspect he may have hit around 40 goals.

I feel like it's almost settled for next year.

Wright number 1.

Jones number 2.

Bryan to play as forward / second ruck.

There were some phases of play today that really stood out with Wright working up and back from half forward and it really screamed that he's the man. Problem is the number 1 can't ruck. The work load is too big and clearly Wright's running ability is nothing special.

Bryan's task now is to put on weight, get fit and develop some forward craft.
