Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Did you even read what I said?

I said don't look at his stats for his importance. I didn't pass any comments on his or anyone else's versatility.

Horse's first move basically every week is to send him down back. He was Free down there late in Q4 and was important while not hitting the stat sheet

Yeah & it is why it wasn't actually an attack on your post but agreeing with you & probably shouldn't have quoted you but it was more about the general frustration on here about Reid being sent down back at times by Horse. Sorry you took it that way.

Huh? The last two rounds in NEAFL:

- 39 hitouts, 20 disposals, 6 marks, 5 tackles, kicked 0.3
- 28 hitouts, 21 disposals, 9 marks, 5 tackles, kicked 3.2

How is that possibly struggling to have an impact?
Ok.
A bit of hyperbole (and lack of research).

Doesn't change the fact that we need to keep Reid. We are not going back to the days where we have two ruckman and Tippet at full forward.

Yeah I'm 100% with you on that one. To be fair, Tippett isn't challenging for Reid's role in any way, shape or form. Probably the only reason for comparison is that Reid has had to pinch hit in Tippett's role when Tippett and one of the other ruckman have been injured at the same time (all too often unfortunately).

Reid is a definite keeper though. The only complaint that people seem to have is that he never really capitalised on the potential he showed in his early career form. But he is definitely a key part of our team currently and in the future. Calls to drop/trade him are the height of foolishness.

He's definitely a keeper - at the right price.

What price that is cannot be readily determined from the outside, not knowing how much space the club has available and what sort of offers he has from elsewhere.

I don't expect the club to toss him out frivolously, but I won't be upset if they choose not to pay overs for him.

Footy Classified tonight ...

Claims that the recruitment group at Collingwood were very unhappy with the dropping of Ben Reid on the weekend
The claim is that Ben Reid has been the main force in attracting his brother Sam to Collingwood....and now that Collingwood dropped Ben, it throws the negotiations into a curly

But there is no evidence that northern clubs have to deal with a 'go-home' factor.

Yeah, we just have two quality players being persuaded back to Melbourne by their brothers but there's no problem at all. Nothing to see.

That Academy, though. The two players it produces once a decade is a real problem.

Collingwood. Haven't played/won't play finals in years, have a distant task master as a coach, a megalomaniac for a President, and an unrelenting local media.

If Reid wants to join his brother and become the next Jesse White good luck to him.

Whilst I don't agree with your last sentence, I wholeheartedly agree with the first.
Why would anyone want to play at that club atm? At least with Zak, the dees look to be headed in the right direction.

There is a bad bug going around at the dees atm so I doubt Zak is interested there.

I doubt Reid is the next Jesse also. He is a top 10 contested mark in the league this season, young and can play both ends well. Stupid to let him go without a fight

The way a team will get Reid to their club won't only have to be big dollars per season but rather, more seasons to earn big dollars.
In my opinion he'll go to Collingwood, firstly because his brother is there & secondly because they are desperate enough to take the risk of offering him a long term contract, even though his soft tissues injuries have been an issue for him.

So we may very well be offering Sam $600K per year for 3 years but the Pies might have a $700K offer for 6 years for example so Sam is looking at $1.8M & the unknown after 3 years at the Swans or $4.2M & the unknown after 5 years. Fit or injured! If he was my son or brother, I'd be telling him to take the 6 years.
So this is the sort of issue we will have with Sam as no doubt he wants to stay a Swan but the club needs to make a call on whether they think he will be producing in 4 years on a regular basis, as a forward/ occasional ruckman/emergency backman.
We are not in a position to offer someone with his history more than 3 years. Perhaps maximun 4 years.
Should Sam stay, it will be purely based on loyalty as according to Chris Pelchen this morning on SEN, he is the only decent key forward available as a free agent & there are a number of clubs throwing out big offers.

I comfortable making the call now that he won't be a Swan next year as we are now in July & no news this deep into the season usually means bad news.
I hope this is the exception!
Then there is Jones, which would be the most disappointing if we lost him because we have put so much into him.
But if we lost them both, I'd be content if we brought in a player/s that would help take us to that next step.

Very logical but depressing post. How do we sit with compo if we lose both? First round action? If we can get two picks inside the top 15 for both that would be at least something.

I think I'm correct here - we would only get a compo pick for Reid as he is a restricted free agent, Jones would have to be traded or walk to the PSD.

If reid gets paid say $800k then does that give us a first rd pick next to our first rd pick?

No, the AFL decides the compo pick and it comes at the end of whatever round they believe is adequate.

2 year trading ban coming up.

I think a few years have passed now since we've given the finger to the rest of the comp at draft time.

It's about time we flexed our finger muscles come draft time. I'm sure we will bring a key player into our club to fix a deficiency we have.
