Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

We should encourage opposition selection committees to try and match up on Buddy, Tippett, Goodes and Reid.

Then I'd start Goodes in the green vest, Tippett at the opening bounce and Reid at CHB.

Goodes was one of the best in our last game, and one of the best in the intra-club. There's about 18 guys I'd rather see start in the vest ahead of him.

My mention of Goodes et al was an accompaniment to my thoughts on Reid in this thread. But I'm hoping to see Goodes play for a few years yet, and I think a regular subs role will let him do it and benefit the team immensely. Might even change general thinking on who best to fill the subs role - youngster or veteran.

Personally, I don't think our last game (how sh*t was that) and first intra-club will be major factors for Round 1 team selection.

But back to Reid. I think opposition matchups is one of many good reasons to make him worthwhile selection. Versatility during a game is also another one. He can be used like a starting sub.

I was a believer but now I'm torn between spud and maybe could produce at a different club. One thing though, I've stopped caring.

I'm leaning towards dud at this stage.

I remember that game against Freo back in 2012 at the SCG. Five minutes into the 2nd quarter and he'd kicked 3 goals. I was sitting there thinking I was seeing the emergence of our CHF for the next decade (obviously hyperbolic in hindsight, but he'd shown a lot of glimpses in that 2011 season so it wasn't too crazy a thought). Near the end of the half he got a stinger in the shoulder (he played out the game so it couldn't have been too bad). He's never looked as good since.

It's like he got the double whammy of too much too soon. He got a big contract very young and immediately it's followed by a flag. What more could you want?

Hopefully the prospect of his next contract being significantly smaller than his current one gives the impetus he needs to improve his game. And seriously, for a guy with that frame I don't understand how he's still so slight.

Edit: I also think it's obvious the club realised they couldn't expect him to become the forward line focal point considering they went and got Tippett and Franklin on huge contracts.

He might not even get a new contract at the end of 2017 yes thats how long he is contracted to..

I really hate potting our own but it has to be said this contract is right up there with Scully and co.

Doesn't matter how many "glimpses" he showed in 2011 you don't do 5yr deals unless they have kicked 50 goals in their first year, won AA, won a B&F etc etc.

Reid looks comfortable the club seems comfortable with him so shrugs.

If you look at our circumstances when he was signed the deal made complete sense. We went after Tex pretty hard at the same time, when that fell through it was a good decision IMO to give Reid his current offer.
He has been given every chance, tenure, money, game time...so no excuses.

I did exactly the same the day Ryan Fitzgerald debuted.
Watched him kick a lazy 5 goals, looked great around the ground and thought "there's CHF stitched up for the next decade".
Injuries cruelled Ryan, and while they have hampered Sam the injuries clearly aren't to the same extent.

2015 will\MUST be a big year for Reid IMO he doesn't have the same versatility as LRT to play the swingman as he's often out bodied and doesn't seem to have any mongrel about him.
He needs to be physical both forward and back and I don't see that in him at this stage.

If he doesn't cement a spot this year, I reckon he goes the way of Jesse White and probably ends up with Ben and Jesse at Collingwood.

No more passengers.

He's been spudding it up for years. I can't think of any other player thats been given more opportunity for less output. at least tom scully gets a touch every now and then.

sam's output in 2014 finals was 8 disposals per game for a total of 0 goals 2 behinds and 1 measly hitout.

what an epic waste of time and money and more importantly a place in the squad

500k would get you a 40 goal a year small forward.

Another 50k and you could have Eddy Betts licking his chops at Buddy's scraps.

Reid's latest injury of falling over his own feet and spraining an ankle underline the calamity he is. Has been given a shitload of opportunity over the last two seasons by being exempt from omission. Even the games he looks to be going ok in, which have been few and far between, you need a GPS tracker for periods of the game to find him. If he was in the military he would be court marshalled for continuously being MIA.

I think he'll be much better this year. Has sort of felt 'lost' the last 2 years, but firstly injury (and people forget he is a young KPP) but secondly being Mr FixIt and playing everywhere. Settle him in one position and then we can make a call. My feeling is he has the tools to be an elite defender. His kicking will always hold him back up forward.

Werent they going to scrap the stupid vest
If only! The stupidest rule change to ever be implemented, bar the Swans trade ban.

I don't mind it. Rather get rid of the interchange cap

To cover the chance of a player occasionally missing part of a game through injury, they remove a player from every game?

The percentage of legitimate "sub due to injury" changes would have to be under 10%.

Well that would be a waste. No way Horse plays a small forward.
I don't buy this argument about Longmire being heightist. We are short all over the park. The list of midfielders under 183cm is:

Kieren Jack
Craig Bird
Lloyd Perris
Harry Cunningham
Jake Lloyd
Daniel Hannebery
Tom Mitchell
Brandon Jack
Jarrad McVeigh
Zak Jones
Luke Parker
Ben McGlynn
Daniel Robinson
Lewis Jetta

Big midfielders? A much shorter list: Kennedy, Heeney Hewett

Our key defenders are shorter than every other club's key defenders.

There must be some other reason he doesn't want to pick a small forward.

I like the sub rule as a potential strategy move as well as covering an injured player. But this isn't the thread really for that

Reid is still in my starting lineup.

But I also believe EVERY player has a trade value. Even Jude would have gone for a top 10 pick during that particular trade period.

What would clubs offer for Reid? I think Freo or Port would be particularly interested. Would hate to see him go to a premiership rival.

There must be some other reason he doesn't want to pick a small forward.

The fact that unless you are talking Luke Bruest or Cyril Rioli types they are useless in Grand Finals would be the biggest reason!
