Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

why would a free agent key forward with interest from many other clubs sign an incentive based team friendly deal? If he signs, the money will be guaranteed.
I'm not really concerned with what Sam gets out of the contract.

I hope there are clauses regarding him actually getting on the park for a significant part of those 4 years otherwise it's a risky prospect.
I think if you checked his stats you'd be shocked to see his played a 20+ game season outside of 2 (not including his first season at the club)

I also think that you would find that he stays on the field and helps with rotations whenever possible, even if it means that he is off for a week or two after. Rather have him with us than against us

of course you're not. You want him to sign a team friendly deal which is heavily incentive based. That just isnt realistic given his circumstances though.

I'm a big Reid fan and want him to stay at the club. I also understand we have to compete with what other clubs are willing to pay. However I think 4 years is a big risk to take and I hope that either the amount we're paying over the 4 years, or some clauses in it (similar to which Tippett had by the way) represent that risk.

Whether Sam is willing to sign such a deal is another matter completely.

I am aware. He has missed a quite a few games though, albeit mostly in 2 seasons.

He also has a history of soft tissue injuries quite similar to his brother who's career has basically been ruined by them.

Im not suggesting we pay him peanuts. Obviously he has a lot of market value after his form this year. Id just hate to see him sit on the sidelines for a large part of his next contract. Particularly given we didn't get a great return from his last long term deal (which by the way I don't blame Sam or the club for)

Anyway, the club seem to get things right more often than wrong when it comes to list management so I'll back them to make a smart call on this.

Why would any free agent key forward sign an incentive based contract when other clubs will be more than prepared to offer him fully guaranteed money. You can hope all you want but the reality is whatever we offer Sam it will be 4 years of guaranteed money.

So you want Sam to sign a deal similar to Tippett? He had a 4 year deal, fully guaranteed, with the option to trigger a further 2 years if he hit KPI's. Thats not what you're initial posts have been suggesting for Sam.

I never suggested a free agent key forward would sign such a contract and I never said I wanted Sam to sign anything. My only concern is what the club are offering. I simply hope the club are covering themselves either by clauses or by not overpaying for those 4 years.

If we lose him to a club that's willing to take on the obvious risks of a long contract then it's dissapointing but understandable.

Sam Reid back in for Sinclair next week? Sammy has the advantage of operating at both ends of the ground and a pinch hitter in the ruck.

I'd love to see him come back having taken whatever motivational pills Callum had last night against the Saints

Rather keep jones but Reid more chance of staying for unders

He sure as hell didn't take unders last time so I don't know why he would now

The whole pyschology around a team is predicated on the ethos of hard work and reward for effort. To leave a player out who has excelled like Sinclair did is dangerous to undermine that ethos. If you don't get reward for working your tail of and achieving success then why even try? I would leave him in.

Sinclair was playing as one of the best before he was dropped a few weeks back...

You have to take into account why the player was brought into the team in the first place and who is the player out

If it was Buddy injured for one week and Sinclair came in and played like that, would you then leave Buddy out the following week?

As i said... Reid brings a defensive capability to his game and it will be up to the coaching lads to decide if they value that flexibility more against Hawthorn
