Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Yeah I agree, I think if he's extended it will be the very last offering made and it will be his final year. It was great to see McLean's advances this season gone and he was starting to look like Sam's long term replacement - hopefully without the injuries!

Yeah look Reid on a cheap as chips deal is fine, he's probably depth now but it's not as if Amartey/McLean have had full years so this depth is important. At worst he'd be a fantastic mentor for young players in the VFL.

I'd venture that what happened last year has more relevance than what happened 6 years ago with a completely different team.

I don't disagree, I also think Sam Reid at 32 is going to be less athletic than he was at 26.

He's not the game breaker his absence has led many to think he is.

Then again all players get better when they're not playing.

I'm a Sam fan and I've always felt for him and that his body has let him down on so many occasions.
I've never thought of him as a game breaker and particularly in the second half of his career, feel he's been more of a break glass in case of emergency type and when he's been able too, he's such a valuable addition.

“REID INJURED IN FREAK DRIVE-THRU MISHAP”

It’d be sooooo Swans if it came to pass.
In a bizarre twist, the employee forgot his sweet and sour sauce, forcing him to leave his car and enter the store.

Swans upset he left the safety of his car in the off season and force him to hold a press conference admiting he's cost the team with his loose behaviour.

McLean is a better ruck, forward and contested mark at this stage of his development. Reid is a spare in defence and not a defender as such.

Buller showed plenty and Will bound ahead with a big pre season. Can also ruck as can Amartey. I expect the Club will also train Up Ladhams as a Fwd and ruck. Logan will lead the fwd line.

All are younger and more likely to make it on the ground.
i feel compelled to disagree with your first sentence. McLean has come far but he still has a fair way to go

… and I did say at this point in his development.

Am comfortable McLean will become a B+ player. Over his career his metrics will be a serious upgrade on Reid.

Hope so.

Reid burst out of the blocks as a prodigious young talent but injuries meant he never did achieve his full potential. Yet he has managed to put together a surprisingly long career, in years if not games. He's the last of our 2012 heroes.

Parker?

If his recovery is going okay then it would be foolish not to give him a year.

We've added depth all over the ground except forward where we badly need it. Can't imagine we'll be paying him much.

Yep
traded in Adams, Hamling, Grundy,, all for a serious crack '24 & '25. Reid will potentially add to this flag push better than a draftee.

End of '25 - Parker, Rampe, Lloyd, Cunningham will retire. Adams will likely have slowed down. Hamling likely retired and Grundy might have 2-3 years left. There'll be a big changing of the guard end of '25.

Someone showed where all our tall defender's contracts finished and most of them were 2024. In my mind that raised the possibility of a bit of a cleanout if we do draft a good one. Just a thought. (ZZ ZZ ZZ).

If Sam had learned to kick straight set shots he would have been a-grade and typically Sam would kick straight a couple of times a year to get us all excited.
In 2022 his rucking went up a level and his work around the ground taking relieving marks down the line or at least spoiling it was crucial in our run. Always been good at marking.
Trouble is being a swing man and part time ruck meant he was getting graded against specialists which is a bit unfair.
I understand if we keep him on but his injury history must be a major concern.
Personally think he's been underrated.

After a year on the sidelines dealing with a major hamstring injury, Reid has been working tirelessly to get his body right for one more crack at the AFL.

Following surgery in May, the 31-year-old spent the majority of the year trying to prove to the club he was worth another deal.

Even before finals, Reid was running at full pace at training sessions, while he has spent most of the off-season completing his rehab at Swans HQ.

However, with a crop of young forwards in Logan McDonald, Hayden McLean, Joel Amartey and Jack Buller, Reid’s experience could prove crucial to helping them take the next step in their AFL development.
