Hi Carlton fans.

In 2005, Marc Murphy chose not to follow in his father's footsteps (and I use that term loosely) and head to Brisbane - instead nominating for the draft proper and ending up with your club.

My question is, looking back - who would have been taken at #1 if Murphy was off the table? Did the Blues have Thomas and Ellis as the next two available? Would you have taken Kennedy or was he pick 4 to give you a mid/forward combination for the picks? Or, was someone else in mind? I don't think Pendlebury was in the mix - I think a few eyebrows were raised when he went as high as he did.

Cheers.

I actually remember hearing at the time that we were hell bent on taking Mitch Clark at #1 until Murphy rejected the Lions offer - and Clark contracted meningococcal.

Had Murphy have been taken by the Lions, I think it would have gone down as:

#1 - Kennedy

#4 - Clark

Just on a side note - I also remember hearing that we were hoping Pendlebury would be there at #20 (which we used on Paul Bower), so it seems that Collingwood really rated him and pulled the trigger nice and early to get their man ... was a good call in the end.

Great replies. Thanks. It's quite interesting.

I remember hearing that Rhys Palmer would've been a Blue with pick #3 in 2007 if the pick wasn't traded in the Judd/Kennedy deal instead of going to Fremantle at 7. Chris Masten probably drops a few pegs if that happens.

Memory is a bit foggy but as I remember it, despite some impressive goal kicking in TAC, I thought Daisy's single digit drafting was not expected.

Would Hodge have been playing with Murph if he had gone number 3 instead of Juddy ? :D

It wasn't expected initially - but after his dominant performance in the GF for Gippsland on the MCG, Hawthorn and Collingwood had him firm in their sites, and it was always going to be Thomas/Ellis at #2/#3.

I remember the club being heavily into Clark as well (Murphs own admission) wouldn't be surprised if we would have picked JK then Clark at 1 and 4 respectively.
