Mojo, can you tell me - will I get lucky tonight? And will my cat get fleas?

Jeez - give the guy a break. Why don't you try to figure this out for yourself, especially since it will be 19 rounds before the draft order is finalised.

No.

Yes.

The lucky Tattslotto numbers are 4,9,12,31,25,14

Wear black on Monday and avoid people with glass eyes.

Anything else?

Mojo, just wondering which players clubs will be chasing in the draft? Or which clubs require which players...

You are going to have to give me a club or something more. Otherwise I could be hear all day rambling on.

Something I am quite capable of doing without any encouragement by others. Can you be a bit more specific please?

Hey Mojo, enjoyed your profiles. Just curious, after seeing Murphy's debut, do you still think he would have gone at number 9 in the 2006 draft, or be higher than that (or maybe even lower)?

About the same. Maybe 1 or 2 spots lower but 7 to 10 is about the range. Would still have Hansen, Thorp, Gibbs, Sellar, Gumbleton and Selwood in front of him. Leuenberger most likely and Riewoldt I have not seen this year due to injury so hard to say with him but about that level.

I guess Murphy has surprised a few but if you saw him last year you would not be. He was pretty good all year and is good under pressure and his ability to be composed in traffic and pick the right option is what stood out to me. I realise some people thought he was a "reciever" or a "predator" but I saw him as a clearance/inside player who can run and carry but will do his best work in congestion. Just sees it clearly and before most others as to what is going to happen and reacts and reads it.

Improved physically after is pre season and added 5 kgs and upped his endurance but that was always going to happen since he does not do a full pre season with Oakleigh Chargers and played cricket instead. So his first real serious hitout with the weights and a running/conditioning coach and so a fair improvement first time through it.

We all know Gibbs is now in the draft but can you fill us in on how good Jarred and Cale Morton are?

Strengths, weaknesses, position, pace, etc.

I would but your avatar scares me. Who is that monster?

I am off home now. Will put something up tomorrow.

hi mojo.. this is great stuff... just wondering on Nick Smith from oakleigh, he was briefly mentioned but no real profile on him. what are your thoughts on the kid?
thanks

Jarryd Morton is a Western Australian player playing for the Claremont club.

Is playing seniors this year in the WAFL and they are using him at full forward and on the flank. Can push onto the wing as well and is a versatile player.

Nothing much lacking in him physically. Tall at around 6 foot 3 and decent speed and endurance. Pretty good agility and can play almsot anywhere and has been used down back in the past. Good kick.
Just nothing that stands out for me. No real tricks in his bag but just a good solid prospect.

Maybe a tall flanker at AFL level or even a full forward. Can push him into the midfield in the rotation also if needed.

Plenty of scope there. The WAFL type style of game suits him. Plenty of space and not overly physical. Will be a different at AFL level.
Might not make it as KPP but certainally can take a strong mark and convert. Pretty skinny overall and will need to work hard on that.

I would peg him anywhere from 25 to 40 in the draft.
At a guess 30 would be where I would have him now. If he keeps playing seniors and doing well I will move him up.
Should get picked in the WA team for the U18 Champs and see how he goes.

Cale Morton I have not seen much of off the top of my head. Eligible next year. I will check the dvd collection and my notes over the weekend and see what I can find out on him.

Actually plays colts. Has been playing off a wing this season but does push forward and can play CHF quite easily if required to. Leads hard and doesnt often push back into packs. Kicked zero goals four last round, in Claremonts one point loss after the siren to East Perth, but can step up and kick a bag.

2006 Stats
Rd 1 - Bye
Rd 2 - 9k, 4hb, 5mks, 1HO, 3 I50's, 2 goals
Rd 3 - 14k, 3hb, 7mks, 6HO's, 10 I50's, 1 behind
Rd 4 - 16k, 4hb, 5mks, 2HO's, 7 I50's, 4 behinds
Rd 5 - Tomorrow vs Peel Thunder

Not sure about that... would be good to know what footage you have seen him playing in the backline

Playing currently in the Claremont Under 16 Development Squad, having a win today in the carnival, was mainly playing as a loose man in defence with good drive down the wing. Will play school football for Hale. A definate starter in the State 16's

Fair enough. I just write that off the top of my head and base it on memory.

He played full forward last year in a number of games and when I saw him this year he rotated from the half forward flank to full forward and back to the wing so I said that. Played a fair bit more full forward last year and I see him maybe developing there at AFL level after getting drafted.

This thread is pretty exhausting on me to be honest. Between getting everything right when I write it at work and have an hour spare and answering peoples qustions on fairly obscure players as well as others. Its so early in the year and might profiles are based on at times very few viewings. Maybe I should not have attempted it but I did and most of the fun and enjoyment I got when writing them initially has all but gone.
Add to that having to moderate the board which involves the actual school players posting, there parents and some pretty vicious personal attacks between rival players and friends and its a lot of work.

I also like to write something on the Carlton board and on a few other websites I am a member and get asked questions. In which case I find myself either repeating or just going rhough the motions a little. Which is how this thread has degenerated from me now.

Just a little bit burnt out with things I think.

I will put up something on Monday and then leave it at that until after the U18 Championships.

Like I have said a number of times. I do not have the time to do Footydraft. I do not want to do it and just wanted to write up a bit of info before the U18 Championships to put my thoughts down and give people an idea about who to look out for. They they can make there own minds up if they care to attend the games or watch them on Fox Footy.
It is not to have them copy my opinion but to inform people who want to know about what type of players they are and then see for themselves and make there own mind up. Nothing like seeing the game for yourself and forming your own opinion. Thats what all this is about.

The problem is this thread has gone on for 2 months and the idea of just putting something up and leaving it there to kill the boredom over the off season has gone. The season is on and prefer to be watching live games for Carlton, sometimes the VFL as well as TAC games.

I dont have time to watch many of tapes or review things when I get asked something. I log on every few days for an hour or so when I am free and do my best to answer.

Hope that explains my level of posting dropping away.

I will review everything in detail after the season is finished and there are no games. So thats September/October for the November draft. Then to get my foot fix I watch tapes of the kids and write profiles. But at the moment for me I much prefer to watch the games live and see for myself. The tapes and the notes and the profiles can wait until then for the real detail.

Hey Mojo... what are your thoughts on Danny Measures and Austin Wonaemirri?

Oh and global warming...

Danny Measures is small midfielder who played at the U18s last year for Northern Territory. Won a lot of the ball and used it well. Pretty decent in traffic and had a bit about him. At his height he has to be pretty special to get drafted but definitely has ability.
Worth a look this year and maybe a late pick/rookie listing.

22/7/88 and 178 and 72kgs last year.

Austin Wonaemirri is another Northern Territory onballer. Absolutely tiny and would be smaller than Eddie Betts. Exciting type but unlikely to get drafted. Got good ball skills and is as evasive as they come. Might lack a little endurance as well and the old classic foreard pocket/burst midfielder who drifts in and out of games.

Global warming? No idea. Who do they play for and are they eligible this year?

Thanks Mojo and he sounds like he'll be drafted for sure because it sounds like he has some potential.

Would I be wrong to describe him as a similar player to Fisher and Waite but a better kick? :(

Can you tell me about Marc Murphy's or Walker's future sons? ;) :D

By the glint in Marcs eye I forsee 2 sons strong of limb and character.

Shifter Sheehan sees them as a 2nd round pick....

also says they are "guns....."

and "huge scope to improve"

"all the tools that an AFL a player needs"

As for the Fisher comparison and Waite. I think they are both better in the air. Bigger leaps and stronger opverhead and taking contested marks.
The WAFL and Colts is less about body on body and contested marking and close checking and more about athleticism and finding space.

Morton likes to find space and drift forward and take a mark. Rather than start there man on man and lead and take marks under pressure. If that makes sense. He plays a style of game similar to Fisher does now but we both know Fisher can also play when someone is on him and he has to take marks under pressure with a quality defnder who can match his run. Something Jarryd will also have to develop when he is denied freedom to run where he wants and drift forward to kick goals.

Pretty decent comparsion as usual from you though. :thumbsu:

Fair enough,

Could he play in defence for Claremont colts?

or is he lacking the defensive aspect of his game, especially more now so with the higher level of competition...

im sure he could but dont see why he would.....
is very competitive and if given the challenge im sure he would love to take it.

while your on here 4th tier who would you see as the likely fb this year for state 18s

I think its becoming more evident nowadays, players who get drafted must be able to play all over the ground(more versatile i spose). With the added aspect of defense in this Mortons' game, it would have to increase his chances of being drafted.

Would have no idea who will fill the backline spots this year... O'Brien is the only defender from last years team going to be in the team again this year. They may have to look to a bottom age player.

Speaking of O'Brien, he is one who has made a dramatic change to his game... with it only being in the last two seasons him making a move to the backline, he is now able to play in any position, and perhaps this is someone who Morton could look to, to help improve his chances of being drafted

Thoughts Lingsface n' others...

1) Lachlan Hansen

Key position player

195cms and 84kgs
17/8/88
Gippsland Power (TAC)

Tall key position player who is a very good mover. Played CHF early in the TAC and moved back to CHB for the 2nd half of last year. Dominated his opponents and marked everything that came his way. Skinny still but wont shirk the issue. Freak at his age and size. Best overall mark I have ever seen for his age. Superb judge of the flight of the ball and has a first class attack on everything in the air. Rarely out bodied even though he is still skinny. Beat stronger opponents in the TAC with superior body positioning and judgement.
Sometimes funny watching him anticipate the kick into the forward line quicker than his opponent when playing as a defender. Would be off and running before his opponent had even moved and take an easy uncontested mark from a opposition kick. Was the “wall” when playing at CHB.

Will likely play forward in 2006 and see how he develops. Shown enough to suggest he can play both ends and become a dominant KPP capable of playing anywhere in the 4 key posts if required.
As he fills out will likely change his style a little and use his body more and more rather than standing off his opponent a few meters and using superior anticipation and leap and body positioning to beat the opponent.
That is not to say he is an outside player at all. He just understand his game and realises that there is no point to getting into a wrestling match against some players who are much heavier and stronger than he was in 2005. Sort of like Dustin Fletchers style. Who does not do well in wrestling contests and gets slaughtered against bigger stronger opponents when caught out in that way (Sav Rocca and J Brown come to mind who seem to beat him to the point where Sheedy won’t play him on them now). The difference is that Hansen is 16 and will be filling out and won’t have to play that way in a few years.

Runs a very high beep test and has very good endurance, speed, and is a freak athletic package for his size. Showed his class at the U18 Championships despite being a year younger and looked up to speed and class at CHB. Should be dominant this year in the TAC and at the U18s and show what he is made of at CHF.

Got better and better as the season went on and was taking a lot of contested marks and getting a lot of the ball in the last few games of the TAC finals. A quite capable ruckman as well who got a number of hit outs and its not inconceivable that he will grow quite a bit more and develop into a ruck in time. He can tap to advantage and has a very big leap. A player who started out last year as an athletic tall who was struggling a bit and ended it as a dominant key backman who got more and more involved in the play and get stronger and more capable of controlling the corridor. Plays the game like Chad Cornes back there peeling off and taking strong marks. But has the added advantage of being able to play tight as well when needed but will still be prepared to back himself in to win the ball. Has all the instincts of a gun forward but needed to round out his development by playing as an attacking defender in 2005 and now is ready for a move forward for the upcoming season.

3) Mitchell Thorp

Key position player

25/12/88
195cms and 84kgs
Northern Bombers, Tasmania

Explosive key position player from Tasmania. Fast and very mobile and has agility and running ability. Played all over the place and shown himself to be versatile and basically up to all the roles he has been given.
That includes being switched from full back to full forward in an U18 Championships game and having the poise and temprement to handle it.

Takes a big mark in pack situations and also in 1 on 1. Good kick for goal and in general play and has fine skills. No real weaknesses in his game and could develop in any of the 4 key positions down the spine. Reads the play well and is not often caught being out of position. An athlete who has football smarts and skill. Therefore is the complete package.

We are talking about Chris Tarrant levels of athleticism when considering Thorp. Add to that a far superior kick and especially for goal and likely extra height, versatility and barely 17 and we have a huge prospect.

Moved him from 4 to 3 on the my latest thoughts. I think he could be the overall best athlete out of the upcoming draft for his size. Has real burst speed to get out on his own on the lead or shut a player down quickly when playing as a defender. Can really take a huge leap and has very good endurance. Basically a Nick Riewoldt type of player with that same speed and endurance and leap that he has. Not proven to be quite in that class yet but should do so this year and stamp himself as a genuine versatile gun tall. Not sure where his best position is and have seen him dominate up forward and take a number of huge pack marks and kick a bag of goals as well as play as a defender. Taking all the kick outs and looking very composed and directing traffic and showing leadership. Then moves around like a wing man and picks the ball up off the ground like a midfielder with clean hands and runs and carries the ball. So really the club who gets him is getting a player who can play anywhere on the ground and develop him how they want. He has everything that is needed to be a quality player with real flair and match winning ability.
Where do we have to finish again to get our hands one of these gun KPP? :(

Snagging Hansen would make a huge difference to Carlton longterm and is probably what we need the most, but I'd be happy if we get our hands on either of them.

About pick five will probably get us Thorp IMO.

He may well be the bolter this year. Ala Riewoldt in 2000. Really firmed throughout the year after Kosi was considered the monty for that draft since he was 15.

It depends on what the clubs are looking for but my early pick for number one is Sellar, although I think the other 'four' are pretty close. I think the thing with Kosi and Riewoldt was that they were both second division kids with heaps of potential but with Riewoldt having a clear athletic edge.

Perhaps the fact that there are a few players of roughly equal talent in the first division may see Thorp go at about what I said but it is early days.

Yeah, I've pegged Thorp and Riewoldt (the Tasmanian version ;) ) to be the potential bolters this year. They're the guys with the most physical talent in the group, IMO, and the most potential to really step it up and impress people.

However, the top 7 that seems to keep coming up is Gibbs, Sellar, Hansen, Gumbleton, Thorp, Riewoldt and Selwood.

Personally, I'd be interested in any of those guys at Collingwood, but in particular Hansen, Thorp, Riewoldt and Selwood. I can see both Hansen and Riewoldt becoming generals in the backline, while Thorp seems to be a Luke McPharlin-type physical freak and versatile player, and Selwood is a classy and tough inside midfielder that would complement some of our new breed of running players.

However, I'd really like to hope that we're good enough that the only guys we have a shot at snaring are Eric Mackenzie, Ben Reid, Andrejs Everitt or Brock O'Brien - Which I still wouldn't be unhappy with.
