I live what hawks did

Everyone only talks about trading up and never down, so sometimes the value is there to trade back

But Dalton an acummulator you dont have? Josh Ward, Cam Mackenzie both accumulate pretty well

I'm a big Josh Ward fan, and he had a great season. However, he had 8 disposals in the preliminary final. A set and forget 25+ disposal midfielder is something we haven't really had since Tom Mitchell left.

Dalton was that in his under 18 year. Can he become that at AFL level too? Hopefully so.

People are going to hate on us no matter what we do, it will be wrong simply because Essendon did it. 🥲
Based on past evidence that is generally a pretty good opinion. Will need a couple of very good drafts to change it. Maybe this is the 1st of them

We traded out of this 'zone', so clearly we didn't rate Dovaston and that group so highly.

However, you seem so assured, so I'll tell Sam Mitchell to take it up with the recruiting team and not to bother investing any time in our recent draftees.
Probably didn’t need Dovaston with Watson and Ginnivan there already. Twomey said you had Grjl, Farrow and O Taylor from memory in that zone.

Yeah, our board was high on Dovaston, but I wasn't keen. For the reasons you mentioned, and his disposal worries me a little. I think his positives will absolutely outweigh his negatives, and he's a fantastic pick-up for North Melbourne in particular, but I never felt like was a genuine option for Hawthorn.

Grlj and Farrow definitely felt like our priorities. After them I actually wanted Nairn, so I thought it was an amazing result to trade back twice and still draft him.

You talk of list balance, but how do you explain your 4 years into a rebuild and after what is it 4 consecutive bottom 3 finishes ? you have one elite level midfielder to show for it, the worst midfield in the league and didn’t bother adding any elite mids in this years draft either, is that a healthy list balance ?

Duursma clear #1 and likened to Bontempelli

CTD a ruck who becomes a 4th midfielder in play. Will definately support the midfield moving forward.

Lindsay a defender / mid with elite kicking.

Rodreguez ranked top 10 6 months ago, AA, state captain, dual sided mid ready to go.

McCarthy moved into the midfield late in the year and was racking up 30 plus.

Just added Dev Robertson as an inside defensive mid at 24.

Macrae at 21 another inside mid who can play forward.

Schoenberg 24 more of an inside mid but a footballer.

Hall entering his 3rd year with Harley.

Hough moved to the midfield last season and played well.ooo
Starcervich also linked to midfield rotations along with Baker and Graham who were added last season.

Yeo possibly back, likely rotated with Hough on ball.

Hewett and Hutchingson progressing nicely as HF / mids.

Ginbey as chance to move to the midfield as he develops, we have so many options in defense as is.

So the Eagles have a few more options this season and kids to develop.

Edit. Thanks for dropping by The Gun and paying your rent. No meaningful counter argument as usual. ;)

Dovaston will be good for North. Brings the heat to the contest and positions himself to find the ball in the forward half. Kicks goals too. Does pretty much everything Duursma doesn’t on the opposite flank and with Curtis will be formidable.

Hawks don’t need much apart from an elite ready made mid and a speedy winger.

And both Nairn and LeRay can add a lot to that last position you mentioned as well.

Hawks did very well with the picks they held.

Flushed two F2nds out as well which was nice work.

I wanted Schubert at 19 to partner Shanahan. Good pick up by the Hawks.

Well I'm off for a wash now after saying nice things about Hawthorn.... ;)

Who is Essendon’s traditional rival?
raffle it

(the correct and only answer is Carlton, Collingwood wish and probably have a right to feel short changed due to Anzac Day but there is a pure hatred for Carlton towards Essendon and vice versa)

North Melbourne according to Bigfooty

Anyone after Dovaston in this draft will more than likely be a bust. The hawks were in this zone and traded out of it. Expect the future for this draft year m to be relatively baron for them. Even if the names seem well known now.
Why start at Dovaston? Everyone in this draft will more than likely be a bust.

Adelaide didnt do too badly, in totality.
We got Mitch Marsh with our first, who is a very talented kid and Crows supporter (thats important). He can be the Tex replacement, or will take over the wing position from Curtin, allowing him to go into the midfield.

Archie Ludowyke was a big slider. Adelaide apparently were tossing up between him and Marsh for our first pick, so to still have him on the boards at pick 50 made him to valuable not to take, even though he is a forward.

But the other one is that we got Indy Cotton for nothing as a Cat B rookie. Many were placing him in the first round if he was in the draft proper.

So all in all, they did alright. The only real question mark could be that everyone we got, including during trade, is a forward, when we need mids.
However I think that Draper will be given more time this year, and Curtin will find himself in there, along with Ah Chee and Rankine. That changes the make up quite a bit. Our midfield will be Draper, Dawson, Rankine, Soligo and Curtin. It could surprise next year.

We never used to win the draft.

We always won trade week.

Then ****ed up the draft.
How about just winning a final.
just sayin GIF

Lordy, the Hawks love the smell of their own farts. Never ends. Sam Mitchell has set the example and the sheep have followed.
Probably because a lot of them have watched their team play in flags since the 60's. Students/fans of the Hawks have great examples of astute recruiting/drafting over the years. As for your mockery...it's 20 plus since you won a final.

I just watched a video of Ollie Greeves.

Got plenty of it across half back and turned it into attack quickly and very well. Poor defensively? Not so sure.
Knows how to make space in congestion.
Solid mark.
Knows how to weight his kicking and can kick with subtly. Attacking player and a good finisher.

Tipping an early season start.

Good luck to him.

How's he doing off the field

Don't know about others but I am pleasantly pleased with the Hawks haul.

and Ollie greaves in Rookie Draft who may end up debuting before the others if he proves himself in preseason & at Box Hill.

and got 2 F2's to add to next years raid on Humphreys or the less likely Butters. Hopefuly Blues slid down and aare happy with the Compo pick for Walsh to let him to move to us as well.

Then if needed, Merret to join as FA in 2027 for a token salary for all the sh1t his manager put us thru insisting to play by his game instead of ours. Didn't take our warning of Dons will try to screw us over which they did when they reneged on their asking price after we met it. Any club dealing with them in future will want deals to be done well before end. Could have got Trac instead.

At what stage of the trade period did the Hawks table an offer for Merrett?

They didn't leave time to get a deal done if there was one to do.

Gave Essendon an hour to accept?

Players will take note not to trust Hawthorn get a deal done and leave them hanging.

Can't blame other clubs for running out of time or chasing required players under contract.

Supporter excited about shiny new toys. I'm shocked to be sitting here.

I think the Eagles are going to look back on Rodriguez in the rookie draft as a steal. Whether they keep him in the side when the prospect of a less productive but flashier player is available will be the key.

There were a couple posts in our draft thread saying we should take him at 13 (which ended up being 19) I almost had a stroke at the Mr Fantastic level overreach on that. Getting him for a 'free' in the rookie draft on the other hand is an absolute steal and was necessary since the board was currently burning down over us not taking Banfield.
