Title speaks for itself, what do we do?
I remember our second game vs Sydney we tried to load up with talls with Miller, Dunn, Neitz and Jamar all up forward. In all fairness, we were thumped out of the middle, but it simply didn't work. Often we used Pickett and Davey as floating half forwards which worked well when we had a solid running game but fell down when the game was played at a slow pace as we didn't have a long target to kick to.
How do we manage Dunn and Miller? It's safe to say that Miller shall never play defence (preys) so it's either forward line or bust for him. Dunn looks like a decent young prospect and will take a few years to develop but is a strong mark and has a long, accurate kick. Good to see considering his lack of bulk.
Neitz has hopefully 2 years left at FF, perhaps more as he was in career best form in 06. Robbo needs to work on his kicking but still got plenty of the ball up forward and should still be good for 2-4 goals a game in 07. Davey and Pickett will always be Davey and Pickett. Yze should still get games in the forward pocket as he can make some magic at times but I wouldn't be sad to see him dropped if he ain't preforming.
Proposed Forward Line:
FP: Yze (Start him there and his accurate kick and strong mark will help as a leading forward while his crumbing ability should snare a few as well. Not a garunteed spot though)
FF: Neitz (Career best form, keep em coming. He moves up the ground a bit too which is good but shouldn't have to be done too much if our half forwards work well. Even if in bad form, will always take the best defender)
FP: Robertson (Struggles up the ground in 06 largely with the Richmond game being one of the few exceptions. Can play a small forward leading roll better than Yze but can't really crumb. If he kicks accurately, should be in for a 50 goal year which is what we want and need)
HF: Pickett (I could have said Davey but I'd like to have one of them around in the middle and one around half forward at a time. They run so much that they will both find adequate time up forward. Pickett's long kick should result in some goals hopefully and well...he's simply Byron)
CHF: Miller (He is the big target that we need in slow games. Will lead up the ground a fair bit. If the running game is going well then we can push him down deep and bring Yze up to half forward to help with the run. Should be able to push into 50 a bit and has improved his goal kicking a fair bit and you can never fault his endevour. Hopefully he can take some pack marks)
HF: Dunn (He will be pushing inside forward 50 more than Miller and leading up the ground less. Isn't a big target so I put him on a flank but he and Miller will basically be playing complimentary roles. Should look to play 15+ games and hopefully snare 25+ goals as goal kicking will be his main priority while Miller is more about being a link man)
Other Forwards:
Davey of course who will play a similar role to Pickett as they both float through the game, sometimes in defence even.
Sylvia should look to be our best pinch hit forward along with Bruce and Green. He has a long, accurate kick and is a strong mark for his size. Needs to learn to play to his height a bit though and work on some agility and crumbing.
Bruce will probably be needed in a tagging role but he should make a good pinch hit forward and can even start up forward in some games and hopefully kick some bags like he has in the past.
Green is a decent midfielder but could be an even better forward. He'd be one of the best FFs going around if he was 190+ but unfortunately he doesn't have that height. Needs to get his kicking back on track and while will spend most time in the midfield, could push forward.
Jamar/Paul Johnson have both shown to be decent forwards when resting as ruckmen which is a good sign even though I don't want to clog up the forward line too much with them as well as Neitz, Dunn, Robbo and Miller. White should rest on the bench at his age, not up forward.
Holland is a defender.
Fergeson is a project defender and his development would be ****ed up if we used him up forward which would be silly anyway as we have ample decent, young, tall forwards.
Newton seems to kick them with ease in the Sandy twos. Should be playing ones as then we'd be able to see if he is actually a good player or just an average player bullying the VFL reserves comp. If he kicks some Sandy bags, don't see why he couldn't come in for Miller or more likely Dunn if they do not preform well.
Anyway, what are your thoughts?
