Re: re do the 2007 draft now that we know what we know

For all the people bagging out Morton, I see a bit of Goddard in him actually and Goddard didn't light the world on fire in his first 3 or 4 seasons either. Tall mobile player who is a bit of a utility. I would like to see him being thrown around a bit more though but I think he could be a very good player just need to give him time.

This, and both of them are penetrating kicks as well. For the people that say they don't see a footballer in him the talent is still obviously there. Larke Medal 2007, ahead of the likes of Kreuzer, Cotchin, Rioli, Palmer and Grimes.

I think Garth Taylor, Byron Schammer, Steven Armstrong, Kepler Bradley and Jesse Smith also won Larke Medals. I could be wrong there.

So did Murphy, Hawkins, McManus, Pettifer and just recently Watts and David Swallow.

Re: re do the 2007 draft now that we know what we know

Not the be-all and end-all by any stretch, but Paddy's rated 2nd of all ruckmen in dreamteam (and #3 in supercoach) points this year.

He's clearly one of the best 10 or 12 in the league. Which is not at all bad for a 22 yo.

I was using Ryder as an example ( always good to use a player from a team that you support ) as a point of comparison.

Dangerfield's has lots of AFL attributes, some possible elite - but hasn't put it together as a package YET.

Ryder is improving and his ouput is gettin closer to his perceived rating.

Re: re do the 2007 draft now that we know what we know

Fair call on Dangerfield at the moment. Although he has had a few standout games (5 goals in a half against Sydney, BOG and all the coaches votes in his fifth game of AFL) even in those games he was a pretty low possession getter. He definitely needs to start finding more of the ball if he wants to match his reputation.

He's played well his last few games. Also has some bags of 30+ possessions, so is already a good player. Will become very good in time.

Re: re do the 2007 draft now that we know what we know

Ablett
Chapman
Bartel
Corey
Selwood
Ling
Johnson
Scarlett
Milburn
Kelly
Mooney
Taylor
Ottens
Mackie

Now thats 14 from our senior list of 39. More than a 1/4. Now who will Morton be better than out of those players?

Mackie, Corey and Ling definitely.

Note: I haven't included some of our younger players such as Hawkins, Varcoe etc. who havent shown their full potential yet, same could be said for Selwood, however Morton will never reach the heights he Selwood already has.

As well as this i havent included our rookies, one of which has kicked 29 goals from 9 or ten games and leads the AFL in contested marks.

He'll be better than those bolded for a start.
Careful how much you overrate some of your players because of the guns giving them an easy ride.

Jordy McMahon also gets some 30 + possy games, is he a good player? hell no. Your obsession with stats proves to me that your understanding of the game is extremely limited. Most likely due to the fact you've never actually played footy.

jordy mcmahon is a champion player, albeit one who is currently residing in the VFL, i dont seem to remember him "getting" any 30+ possy games recently... so you will agree that abletts rating amongst commentators and the public is constantly inflated due to his large statistical impact???

Oh i get it, the draft pick/goal after the siren thing against you guys - clever.

He may not have got 30 but he would've gone close last year. Remember he hasnt played an AFL game this year.

Ablett also gets numerous clearances, I 50's, score assists and goals. He gets way more contested ball than Morton who whilst still playing an important role plays a far easier one than Ablett.
IMO Abletts best games arent necessarily the ones where he has gotten 40+ disposals. Its the ones he gets the stats i alluded to above.

Re: re do the 2007 draft now that we know what we know

oh I get it, you're comparing a 26 y/o 150+ game player to a 20 y/o coming back from injury who's yet to play 50 games

I was challenged by one of your fellow optimists to do so.....

i wasnt being completely serious... i fully respect abletts ability and rate him very highly... but you must admit, he will get a 30 possie game most weeks and the media, etc. focus on that while not focusing on his influence on the game a lot of the time... ablett is the best player in the league, but he is made out to be even better than he is currently

FWIW i actually really like Melbourne as a team, i just dont rate Morton (and many of my Melbourne supporting mates dont either) no need to lose sleep over it big guy.
