Shapes as a cold yet exciting day at Joondalup on Saturday, with all 3 grades being played at the one oval again.
If you're making the trip to Arena Joondalup on Saturday, remember that the Freeway will be closed between Ocean Reef Road and Hodges Drive, so simply get off at Ocean Reef Road and then on to Joondalup Drive (I think?). Just a heads up from the WAFL web page.
League - Falcons v Swans. This should be a ripper as I think there was only 2 goals max between these teams in all 4 contests this year, including the pre-season match. The Falcons, with plenty of experience, are up against the youthful and exuberant Swans side, without their captain. Once again I reckon the LeCras, Campbell, Longmuir forward line will be the critical factor in the game. I don't think Swans can choke the midfield supply like Subi, so these guys will get a bit of the ball. McKinlay does a great job each week, but we need another tall back there to do a good job. This is why I expect Naita to head down back at the first bounce again. Campbell normally kills Swans every time he plays, so lets hope he can be stifled. Swans will also need to put pressure on Lasscock, Pearce and Chambers in the midfield. Last time Smith did a great lock down job on Chambers so should get the job again (not bad for a kid I didn't want in the team last week
). Roberts and Pearce will probably go head to head but Roberts will need to be tighter this week.
Swans have wingers with super pace and tenacity, who were amongst Swans best last time these 2 teams played, in Wolfenden and Garlett. I wouldn't be surprised to see Garlett recalled this week. Add to them the Bloodnut dynamo, Banfield, and you've got a fairly tough, aggressive and quick midfield. Geappen will need to come prepared to play, as he will be required to provide big support to the 17 and 18yo spearheads in Yarran and Notte. M Johnson plays his heart out every week but he is not going to kick 5 goals in a half again, so others are going to have to step up.
Will Ames be back this week? Would be very handy but Swans can't afford him to last 10 mins like the last time we were at Joondalup.
Swans were last in a prelim final in about 2005 I think, and it may be a similar tale for West Perth.
Should be an absolute belter! Carn the black ducks!!
