Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

2009 Prediction Ladder- A rough idea

1st- Hawthorn - A highly skillful team
2nd- Geelong- Pretty much the same as Hawthorn but have the best player in the competetion which is ...... James Bartel who got 29 votes in the 2007 BM.
3rd- Sydney- A outstanding team. They are a ageing team, but at their best, very hard to stop
4th- Kangaroos- Same with Sydney, took it to every team including the premiers, which they beat the premiers.
5th- Western Bulldogs
6th- St.Kilda
7th- Adelaide
8th- Collingwood

9th- Brisbane Lions- A team going on the rise back to fame, like 2001-2004.
10th- Carlton
11th- Port Adelaide
12th- Fremantle
13th- Richmond- I would of put them higher, but since the competetion is so tight, it's hard, all the teams are so great.
14th- Essendon
15th- West Coast
16th- Melbourne

Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

1. Hawthorn (should only get better)
2. Geelong (cant see them finishing lower)
3. Pt Adelaide(has a easy start and hopefuly the confidence grows ala 07)
4. Dogs (very good cant see them over taking top two)
5. North (alway seem to be around they mark but not a major playor)
6. StKilda (Pretty good side will make eight)
7. Adelaide (will be a good team for another year)
8. Carlton (Great talent but so was last years team)
9. Brisbane (I want to see this improving team in the eight but...)
10. Richman (This would be worst case scenario for the tigers)
11. Sydney (the teams only getting worse)
12. Collingwood (I dont think their that good)
13. West Coast(already got some quality players and are picking up a lot more)
14. Fremantle (got some good young player but they would want to be freaks to raise freo any higher)
15. Essendon (didnt use to think they were crap but it turns out every club except melbourne have better lists)
16. Melboune (Poor guys, i cant see much to look forward to)

can't really think of the third best team, put port their for wishful thinking. Its more realalistic than carlton, people are overrating them. They have had a talented team for about four years and accomplished nothing (except wooden spoons) and people are getting all excited because of their BIG improvment this year of STILL MISSING THE EIGHT.

And i wish i could put sydney down the bottom like some people but unfortunatly that is just not realistic, even though they have a slow crappy list with little young talent they still seem to be a good team.

And collingwood are not in the top eight is because they shouldent be they are overrated by all. but in reality they will still end up in the eight becaues they NEVER have to travel.

Adelaide will still be competative with a pretty solid defence and some veterans that have been getting the crows out of trouble for ten years (Edwards, Goodwin, Mcload) they always seem to rise when the crows are on the ropes. but are this year when they surley will be getting close to retirerment holes will appear and crows should stop making the eight.

I think teams from spots 7 to 12 is a grey area and any of them could make it or not.

Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

1. Hawthorn- going by form last year with the young list they've got only going to get better
2. Geelong- will be over taken by Hawthorn but still big threat for premiers
3. Richmond- For some reason i feel they are going to smash it next year
4. Western Buldogs- Even with some holes they are still an awesome side
5. St kilda- Still have a good playing list and will make 8 easily but not good enough to challenge for flag
6. Adelaide- Every year they get ridden off and every year they prove everyone wrong, there style of play will ensure they play finals 08
7. Carlton- Still so many holes and questionable defence but Midfield plus Fev should make the 8
8. Sydeny- much like Adelaide always ridden off always prove people wrong
9. Brisbane Lions- Could make the 8, but big ask for first year coach though
10. Essedon- Could easily make the 8 with there side but i feel they will have another injury plagued year and not enough depth to cover players
11. Port Adelaide- Had a bad run with injuries last year and still have a very good side
12.North Melbourne- keep making the 8 when others doubt them, but can they really keep doing it?
13. Collingwood- Feel there playing list is getting worse over the years and they need to start beating the easier sides to be an actual threat, think they'll slide
14. West Coast- Will be better next year, but still a long way off
15. Fremantle- Same as West Coast will improve but still a long way off
16. Melbourne- At the re-building stage and have some good youngsters but still quit a few years at the bottom i believe

Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

Hawthorn - Will dominate the whole year
Geelong - From spot 2-5 The ladder is really open.
Richmond - Young team with the adition of Ben Cousins to the tiger midfield and the likes of Foley, Cotchin, Tuck Deledio etc.
Western Bulldogs - Dogs are building and building should see them do quite well.
Port Adelaide - Young, classy team would either finish from 5-10
Sydney - This is one of Sydneys last years to do well and build on some young talent with the aditions of Gold Coast 17. They really need to get some younger players
Carlton - Young team, should do well, But will start the season rocky.
Saint Kilda - Read Port

Collingwood
Adelaide
Essendon - A couple more a years and the dons will be the Baby bombers of old again.
West Coast
Freo
North Melbourne
Brisbane
Melbourne

Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

"collingwoods kids need to step up if they are to make the 8"
they have done that for the last 3 years pretty much, the tiges blues and freos kids need to step it up if they are to get anywhere near the 8. All three clubs have some great youngsters, but a cousins or judd doesnt = top 4.

1. Geelong
2. Hawthorn
3. Saints
4. Collingwood
5. Bulldogs
6. Kangaroos
7. Carlton
8. Adelaide

9. Richmond
10. Brisbane
11. Sydney
12. Fremantle
13. Essendon
14. West Coast
15. Port Power
16. Melbourne

i cant see a lot of changes from last years top 8

A lot of supporters from two clubs in particular are expecting top four finishes , carlton and richmond. People are over excited with the juddman and cousins. If one player can carry a team then im sure the pies with Buckley would have had a lot more premierships. Expecting both teams to be a lot more competitive , they are so far off the top four mark though in terms of consistency and being able to knock off the top teams like geelong hawks and saints.

Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

I don't mean to get this thread back on topic but here's my 2 cents.

My ladder prediction is different to the others here, basically I have listed a range that I think each team will place given injuries, suspensions, young player development, etc.

Adelaide -> 5-10 (Not quite a top 4 side, but should be around the top 8)
Brisbane -> 3-9 (This season's smokey I think, gun midfield and key forwards mean they must be a top 4 threat)
Carlton -> 7-12 (Severely overrated side, no support for Fev and if he gets injured then its season over)
Collingwood -> 4-10 (Due to its annual soft draw, they could sneak into the top 4, hopefully they dont)
Essendon -> 10-16 (Side is too young to seriously attack top 8, but the kids may fire)
Fremantle -> 10-16 (See Essendon, but the situation is worse, how any side can stuff up a draft this good with such good picks baffles me, that said did slightly redeem themselves in the rookie draft)
Geelong -> 1-4 (Definite top 4 side, but wont surprise me to see them drop out of the top 2)
Hawthorn -> 1-4 (Like Geelong but top 2 is more certain, its scary to think just how young the nucleus of this side is)
North Melbourne -> 5-12 (could realistically finish anywhere, but not quite top 4 nor bottom 4 material)
Melbourne -> 15-16 (Many barren years to come, the only good news to come from this year will be priority picks)
Port Adelaide -> 3-14 (Which Port will show up this season? I think they will make the 8 due to simply too much quality for them not to)
Richmond -> 3-9 (The Tigers midfield is pure quality and with the addition of Cuz, makes them the team to watch I feel this season, but they could revert back to their Ninthmond ways)
St Kilda -> 5-10 (They only made the top 4 in 08 I feel due to no other team being worthy, will be overtaken in 09's top 4 by Brisbane or Richmond I think)
Sydney -> 6-14 (One can never discount the Swans, but this year may finally be the year they drop out)
West Coast -> 7-15 (If all goes to plan then the Eagles may just sneak into the 8, with too many quality youngsters and premiership players, but as seen by last year's shenanigans, injuries and Kerr's annual brain explosions could derail the season)
Western Bulldogs -> 2-8 (Last season saw the Doggies play some brilliant attacking football but the lack of a key forward may show through again, but are almost certainly a top 8 side)

With all that said, here is my actual ladder prediction for 2009.

Hawthorn
Geelong
Brisbane
Western Bulldogs
Richmond
St Kilda
Adelaide
Port Adelaide

Collingwood
Carlton
West Coast
North Melbourne
Sydney
Essendon
Fremantle
Melbourne

GRAND FINAL: Hawthorn vs Geelong (The top 5 provide the most realistic chances, but any combination other than an 08 replay will be a surprise)
PREMIERS: Hawthorn (Could go either way, but I think they have figured the Cats out)
NORM SMITH: Hodge or Buddy (Hodge is the best big-game player currently but if Buddy turns it on, who knows)
COLEMAN: Buddy (Noone will come close I think)
BROWNLOW: J.Selwood (Absolute star, hopefully our version Mr. Swift can be another dream story)
RISING STAR: Nicholas Naitanui (Obviously has a very distinct look, but his football will also do some of the talking)

Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

1. Geelong- Still see '09 as a two-horse race, but the Cats will bounce back strong and I'm expecting a GF re-match. Hopefully Ablett gets through a full season and pinches the Brownlow this year; the bloke's been my favourite non-Essendon player for years now.
2. Hawthorn- Splitting hairs between the Hawks and the Cats, but I'd be suprised if either team fell outside the top two. Can Buddy replicate his '08 form? Probably.
3. St Kilda- Have enough experience and talent to be a top 4 side, but still don't see them as a genuine premiership threat. Hopefully Ball and Goose can get back to their best and have put all their injuries woes behind them. The Sainters are a good side, however IMO they still lack pace, creativity and the 'x-factor' to make them genuine contenders. Need to get the Clarke brothers up and running and find some more mongrel (which IMO they've really lacked since Hamill).
4. Bulldogs- Will become a hunted team and with a few injuries I can see them slipping down just a tad. Play a good brand of footy though and should have the confidence from '08 to back things up with another good season. Am looking forward to seeing Ryan Griffin continue to develop; kid's a gun.
5. North Melbourne- Underrated and haven't really lost any crucial players; the Roos seem to be constantly treading water though and are sure to be a frustrating team to tip throughout the year. Could easily be a top 3-4 side, or fall short of playing finals. A lot of strong, mature bodies and consistant solid work ethic should keep them in the mix though.
6. Collingwood- Some good young talent, but IMO lack leadership and can't see them forcing their way into the top 4 just yet. Will be an interesting year for the Pies.
7. Adelaide- Still has some quality experience and promising youth, but I just don't see the Crows improving in '09. Need to get their forward line organised if they're going to be genuine contenders. Hopefully we get to see McLeod return to his best, as well as the Bird Man back taking those grabs from up in the stratosphere.
8. Richmond- Whilst they have one of the better midfields in the comp, the Tigers still lack quality depth, and had a relatively good run with injuries over this past season. I can't see Richo replicating his stellar '08, either (that's not to say he'll have a poor year, I just think that he'll drop off a bit). Having said that, the inclusion of Cuz will help enormously (assuming everything goes to plan with his return) and should nudge them into the 8.

9. Essendon- It all comes down to having a bit of luck with injuries with my mob. With a relatively full season from Fletch, Lucas, Lloyd, Davey, Hille + McVeigh, along with an improving bunch of kids, I think Essendon (similar to Brissie) are a big unknown. Really showed some promise in the second half of the season when we managed to keep the same side out on the park, but our injury toll became a joke in '08 and, as a result, the gap between our best and our worst was huge. Luck with injuries will decide whether we sneak into the 8 or continue to struggle; with an ok run, I see us finishing anywhere from 7th-11th.
10. Carlton- Their 'star studded' midfield will finally start to gel, and are one team steadily on the improve (unfortunately! :p). Pressure's on now for the Blue Baggers, their best 22 is certainly capable of playing finals, but IMO they really lack depth and still have a huge reliance on too few (Fev in particular). Could easily finish as high as 6th if all things go right injury-wise, but by the same token, it would probably only take Fev to miss a reasonable chunk of footy for them to slide.
11. Brisbane- Have some brilliant players still running about, and with a new coach and (possibly) a new game plan, Brissie are a tough one to tip. Continued improvement from blokes like Brennan, Adcock, etc will be the key. Daniel Rich should come in to have an immediate impact, too. Can't see them rocketing up the ladder just yet though, but coming in at 11 does perhaps seem a bit too low. Certainly a dark horse, one of the harder ones to tip for '09. Simon Black will again have a terrific year that goes virtually unnoticed by the Melbourne press.
12. Sydney- Always thereabouts, but on the decline with an ageing list (although do have some talented youngsters). A hard one to tip, as their starting side is very good. Could easily climb into the top 6, or (just as easily) be a side to drop quite significantly. And no, I'm not one of those people who always tips the Swans to drop; this is the first time I've had them outside my 8 in years.
13. Port Adelaide- In a bit of a grey area, as they still have some outstanding talent, but I'm not exactly sure if '08 was a huge anomoly or if they're genuinely entering some kind of re-building phase. With solid output from their older heads, they may jump a few spots higher. Need younger blokes like Pearce, Boak, etc to step things up a notch. Could easily be playing finals, but who knows with this mob?
14. Fremantle- Lost a big chunk of experience at the end of '08, and I can see next season as a very important one for the Dockers as they continue to blood their young talent. Have some very promising youngsters that will be given plenty of opportunity to strut their stuff over the coming season. Expect them to make their way back up the ladder over the next few years, but they're still a way off right now.
15. WCE- Have added even more talent from the draft to an already very young list (albeit an impressive one). Don't expect much from the Weagles next year though, and predict a roller coaster of highs and lows as their kids continue to adjust to senior footy. Great young list though, however they're still very raw and will lack the consistency to improve a great deal in '09.
16. Melbourne- Cannot see where the improvement will come from to leap-frog many (if any) other sides. Have loaded up very well over the last couple of drafts and have some great young potential, but it's gonna be a tough few years for Dees fans as their kids develop and gel together.

Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

You'll notice that year after year, the ladders are completelt different, so the one in 2009 will look completely different than that in 2008. Thus I have come up with the following;

1- Geelong (still too good)
2- Hawthron (strong, but not as consistent as Geelong)
3- St.Kilda (hard pick this one, they will have to win close-games though)
4- Western Bulldogs - (Strong but not 'convincing')
5- Collingwood (Good side, should make finals)
6- Port Adelaide (the yo-yo form should continue, lots of new talent)
7- Adelaide (always make the finals, won't do anything with the opportunity though)
8- Richmond (tough one, I am thinking Cuz might add a bit of skill to a very talented mid-field)

9- Carlton (overrated - all talk, no substance)
10- Fremantle (wildly un-predictable)
11-West Coast (don't let last season fool you, they are better than you think they are)
12- North Melbourne (Not convinced - although genearlly cause upsets)
13- Sydney (they should fall this year)
14- Essendon (lots of young talent - not convincing though)
15- Brisbane (must settle in with a new coach and different game plan)
16 -Melbourne (need to develop youth, prepare for a wooden-spoon)

Sides to watch;

Fremantle - Who knows where they will finish really? If they won all their close games last year, they could have made the finals - should do better next year

Port Adelaide - Here's a strange stat- in season 2008, there where only 2 games Port didn't lead at some stage, the only 2 they didn't were against Carlton and Collingwood. This suggests that they start well, but never finish it off. Should get better at this, and make finals.

Richmond - Got something to smile about now, Should make finals because of talented midfield

Premier - Geelong
Norm Smith, Brownlow - No point in guessing, too unpredictible
Colemen - Lance Franklin

Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

I think the top 2 spots of the ladder can be locked in just a matter of which 1. From 3 - 8 could be just about any side.

1. Geelong
Best team in the league - even though they missed out in '08 cant see them falling yet. I would love to see Tomahawk play the majority of the season and kick 40-50+ goals

2. Hawthorn
Massive scoring potential with Buddy, Roughy, Williams etc
Interested to see what happens with their ruck this season. Renouf in trouble? Taylor missing out on the GF. Also wondering who will fill Croad's possie.

3. Bulldogs
Good team just seemed to take a back seat towards the end of '08. Would like to see Grant play some games.

4. Carlton
Possibly big movers. Massive hype - fully fit Judd, inclusion of Warnock.
Are they heavily reliant on Fev though?

5. St Kilda
Still think their side is capable. Many doubters of their ability and their drafting. But I think King was one of the best pick ups. Short term fix but he is a premiership player and former captain. Kosi and Reiwoldt need to share goal kicking responsibilities

6. Kangaroo's
People say they are under rated. I think they will finish anywhere from 4 - 8

7. Richmond
Once again could move into the 8 in '09. A lot of hype with the inclusion of Cousins.

8. Brisbane
Another wildcard side could finish anywhere from 4- 12. Looking forward to seeing the buerger have more game time. Pick #7 Rich

9. Adelaide
Don't know a lot about Adelaide. But they have a good enough squad to make the 8.

10. Port
After a quiet '08 I think they will bounce back. Once again unsure who will be their leading goal kicker.

11. Collingwood
I think they will have a good year. Any of the teams from 3-12 could make the 8, as I rate these teams and their ability equally.

12. Sydney
Could finish in the top 8 but towards the end of last season their was talk about the ageing team. Goodes can play pretty much anywhere.
Also can anyone tell me whats going on with their ruck division - with the retirement of Everitt who is Joll'ys backup? LRT

13. Essendon
Possibly bias but we could finish higher if we have our best team on the field for most of the season. For some players it could be their last chance and they need to step up and prove people wrong.

14. West Coast
Could finish way higher. Looking forward to seeing more of their younger players on the field.

15. Fremantle
Wildcard - Always highly rated in pre season. Could finish in the 8. Especially with players like Pav, Sandi, Mcpharlin, Haselby and Palmer

16. Melbourne
Can't see who's going to kick the majority of their goals in '09

Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

Obviously he is a big talent and as your team got him you will be drooling over the potential, but how much will Worsfold play him next year? I would have through Rich was the obvious player form this year for the RS. There is probably be a few left from last year that have a year's development in them and are be better off for it that will get a reasonable amount of game time this year.

Forward Flank.

My ladder:

Geelong 1-2 (Best Home and Away Team in the Comp )
Hawks 1-3 ( My Tip for the Flag)
Richmond 3-6 (Cousins will help Richmond into the eight Roughy for the Flag but lack key forward strength)
Bulldogs 2-6 (awsome midfeild, lack hardness, lacking forward power)
Carlton 3-8 (Strong well rounded side that wont have the edge needed yet)
North Melbourne 4-8 (Suprise everyone but themselves, will shape the finals series)
Saints 4-10 (Good side, but wont improve while others do)
Adelaide 4-10 (Could make the top 4 but wont)
West Coast 6-12 (Injury free are a top eight side, defense is very strong if all fit, best forward set up for a wc side in a long time, only question mark is over the midfeild and winning enough contests, if the eagles slip expect some seniors to be culled)
Collingwood 6-10 (Injury free and in form they would make the eight)
Sydney 6 -10 (Hard to slide them after years in the finals, but they will lack pace in 09)
Brisbane 8-14 (strong side that needs more development years)
Port Adelaide 8-14 (struggle to rate them as a team, good squad though)
Essendon 10 -16 (Developing but list need more development)
Fremantle 14 - 16 (loss of mature players will be deadly, stuggle to score goals and weak defense, shammer, Haselby Palmer and headland is of unknown quality however )
Melbourne 15 -16 (in the abyss as far as squad goes)
