Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

I am amazed to see alot of posters put Carlton not only in the top 8 but in the top 4. I am a very passionate Blues fan and would like to see us make the 4 but I would not think it will happen next year. My ladder prediction for 09:

1st: Hawks
2nd: Geelong
3rd: Brisbane
4th: Western Bulldogs
5th: North Melbourne
6th: Carlton
7th: Richmond
8th: Collingwood
9th: Fremantle
10th: Essendon
11th: Sydney
12th: St Kilda
13th: Port Adelaide
14th: West Coast
15th: Melbourne
16th: Adelaide

Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

I think it will be good to see Adelaide bottom out.
Think it will be one of the tightest ladders ever.

This is my crack at it:
1. Cats
2. Hawks
3. Bulldogs
4. Kangaroos
5. Lions
6. Magpies
7. Blues
8. Tigers

9. Saints
10. Bombers
11. Power
12. Dockers
13. Swans
14. Eagles
15. Crows
16. Demons

Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

I have seen Freo put 16th by a few people now. Why would people think that? Do you really think they are as bad as they showed in 2008?
IMHO the poor 2008 season was an abberation for them and they are top 6 contenders for sure. They have one of the best players in the league and some of the best rookies in the league. If Harvey has finally learnt to coach, they could go far:thumbsu:
IMO they will have a poor season next year.

I don't really rate their list and they have had a massive list turnover this offseason, losing ALOT of experience.

I think they will finish around 11-13.

It's way too early to really say anything but...

1 Geelong
2 St Kilda
3 Hawthorn
4 Bulldogs
5 Carlton
6 Brisbane
7 Collingwood
8 Richmond

9 North Melbourne

* i wanted to place North in the top 8 but just didn't know who to take out. Also not sure how well Saints will do but just have an inkling.
And Carlton will follow in similar fashion to Hawthorn last season.

Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

Most people are very quick to write off the Swans (again). Rememeber the Swans get written off nearly every year and every year the Swans still manage to finish in the top 8.

A fact people should remember is that under Paul Roos (when he has coached a full season) the Swans have NEVER finished outside the top 8.

Re: 2009 AFL Ladder Prediction

1. Hawthorn - Young super talented side will only get better in 2009. Expect a dominant display from the Hawks in 2009.

2. Brisbane - A grade midfield, solid backline, heaps of firepower up forward. New coach, new attitude, right mix of youth and experience, can see Brisbane having a huge season in 2009.

3. Geelong - Still the best midfield in the comp, dysfunctional forward line and aging backline will see them slip in 2009. Will still finish top 4 but wont be anywhere near as dominant as in 2007/8.

4. Carlton - Can see any of the sides from 5-8th taking 4th spot but I think Carlton will get the required 14-15 wins from their relatively soft draw. Heaps of young talent that will only improve in 2009. The Blues will also finally have the height down back and in the middle to match it with top sides. Injuries to Fevola and key defenders could see them miss the 8 entirely.

5. Western Bulldogs - Still lack a tall marking forward, Welsh, Akermanis, Johnson all a year older. Cant see them kicking enough goals to worry the top sides.

6. Richmond - Tigers should have made the finals in 2008, lost a bunch of games in the first half of 2008 by less than a goal, but still showed alot in the second half of the season. Will bank on huge years from Richardson, Simmonds, Deledio, Cotchin and Nathan Brown to ensure their spot in the finals.

7. Collingwood - Another super soft draw will see the sub-par Magpies playing finals again in 2009. Could easily see them finishing bottom 4 though if things dont go their way.

8. Port Adelaide - Horror season in 2008 after overachieving in 2007. Has a good mix of youth and experience, will hope that young talent gives them a lot more than they got in 2008. Will be the bottom 4 side who makes the finals.

---------------------

9. Essendon - Esendon have the potential to be one of the most dangerous sides in the AFL. They have a heap of super-quick mids/forwards, quality key forwards and an A grade ruckman. Will rely heavily on Mr Gadget down back to get the job done. Will also hope that their young talent finally lives up to the hype in 2009.

10. North Melbourne - Always underrated in Ladder Predictions, the shinboner spirit wont be enough to get them a finals berth in 2009. Has a solid list with very few standouts, expect them to miss finals but wouldnt be surprised at all if they made it yet again. Still, wont be anywhere near premiership contention.

11. St Kilda - The premiership window is officially shut. Cannot match it with the top sides, midfield is slow and lacks pace, backline looks very ordinary without Maguire and has no real firepower up forward (Riewoldt isnt a huge goal kicker). Wont be able to match the top 8 sides for pace and will only manage 10 wins in 2009.

12. West Coast - After a shocking season in 2008 the Eagles will look to bounce back in 2009. Have enough premiership players and genuine superstars to realistically expect 8-10 wins.

13. Sydney - Couldnt manage to trade for the youth and pace it desperately needed. Will struggle to match it with the top sides in 2009 but could still get 8 wins.

14. Melbourne - Expect 6 wins from the Dees, wont worry any of the top 8 sides but are on the rise.

15. Adelaide - Overachieved big time in 2008 due to getting a dream draw in the first half of the season. Has very little young talent, slow aging list and very minimal firepower up forward.

16. Fremantle - Cannot see any improvement from the Dockers. Have cleaned out their list and are clearly looking at rebuilding.

Great analysis and your thoughts echo mine, except I have the Saints in my top 8 and the Lions out (which is a risk given most first year coaches seem to have pretty decent records) I also dont think Geelong will slide, they will be a bloody angry unit in 2009, and I expect them to win the flag.

I find that really funny.

St.Kilda Defence > Carlton Defence
St.Kilda Forwards > Carlton Forwards
St.Kilda Rucks > Carlton Rucks

Midfields break even IMO.

but if we get Cousins, it will be in our favour.

Weren't most of your supporters tipping you to be Top 8 and even Top 4 last year after getting Judd?

There is not much difference between this year and last year for Carlton except for the improvement in the younger guys.

Stop Fevola, Stop Carlton. It's as simple as that.

Thats why you haven't beaten us in 11 games straight because Hudghton owns Fev

Expecting Victorian teams to dominate the 8 this year. Top 4 sides last year while the interstate sides all struggled.

Hawthorn & Geelong will be clearly the 2 best sides with the Pies, Dogs and Saints the next best 3. Richmond and Carlton to continue their improvement and make the 8 at the expense of the Roos and Crows.
