You're correct, Franklin did have a break out year. But there's not enough there to convince me that he should have been included over Mooney. Of course he had more shots at goal - he played closer to goal than Mooney and that is highlighted in inside 50 stats for the year (Mooney 69 I50s v Franklin - couldn't find but wasn't in the top 100) Coupled with the fact Mooney had the most goal assists in the league for 07 I fail to see how he is the luckiest player ever to receive an AA jumper. He also contributed 3.6 goals per game - slightly below Buddy who had 3.9.
So in essence we had someone who pumped the ball inside 50 on more occassions, took more marks, had more goal assists, and backed it all up on the big day when he kicked 5 goals in the GF. But yeah, he was the luckiest player ever....
Hawthorn was a middle of the road side in 2007, whereas Geelong was the dominant team for the season. If Geelong actually had a decent key forward, that player would kicked at least 80-90 goals in 2007. If Cameron Mooney had played for Hawthorn in 2007, he probably would've been lucky to rack up half of Franklin's numbers.
Cameron Mooney was one of the great All-Australian selection blunders. No surprise it occurred after Robert Walls was made a selector. Actually, I don't think it was a blunder. I think Andy Demetriou used his veto powers as the chairman of selectors because of <injunction>. Mooney was lucky to be included.
