The 2009 draft was where our rebuild started with the club drafting 12 new players via the National, Preseason and rookie drafts.

Just with the big improvements of Griffiths and Astbury this season, it got me thinking, do their improvements now make the 2009 draft a 'win/pass' for the club?

Before this season, the only real win we had out of the draft was Martin (not a bad win to have!) while getting Grimes in the PSD was also a good get.

Obviously quite a few of the below players aren't at the club anymore (only remaining are Martin, Griffiths, Astbury, Dea and Grimes) and it's early days in terms of Astbury and Griffith's improvement but given the renaissance of Griff and Astbury, does this make the 2009 draft a successful one?

Think it has to be a pass if Griff and Astbury continue on the current path. Both are looking at being decent cogs in our KP 22 and then we got Dusty. Grimes is also a very good player (his form has been fine imo) and so really we nailed a compromised draft. Will set us up for years to come KP wise but won't see how sucessful it was for another 12-24 months when Griffiths and Astbury really enter their prime.

Yep, I tend to agree with you amcre. In a compromised draft, we potentially have 4 best 22 players that could realistically be at the club for another 7-8 years.

I still have high hopes for Dea who I've always seen as Newman's eventual replacement. With Newy struggling, now would have been a good time to throw Dea in for some more games (especially with Morris' shoulder not being right).

Griff and Astbury's form certainly make it look a lot better. I rate Grimes highly too. 3 best 22 talls plus a star midfielder/forward, I'd call that a win.

Still plenty of time for Dea as well. Should come in for Morris IMO

At the moment it's a pass/credit. If both Astbury and Griffiths continue to develop it's a distinction. If Dea develops into a quality player it's a HD.

4 players out of the 1st 5 picks are looking good - Dea the only player that really hasnt impressed me so far ( yeah his injured and that has nothing to do with my opinion)

Pass so far, with a full season out of Griff and Astbury taking it to a credit.

Doesn't impact the evaluation at all, but we got games out of Nason and Contin is back in the VFL, so a few good stories from the long shots.

It is entirely possible that the first 3, Martin, Griffiths & Astbury will end up being 150+ game single club players.
That is a win in anyones drafting language.
Problem is, is that because they are that good (Martin obviously is) or is it that they are the best of an average broader list?!?!?

Based on the seasons of Astbury and Griffiths so far, it has to be considered a pass. It's just a shame that instead of being dragged along with the improvement of others around them, they have instead overtaken the others around them.

Good thread NUFC Tiger . Is there anyone who has any idea what the averages are in relation to drafting numbers ie what percentage of draftees actually make it? As in play 50-100 or more games for their club

I agree with Dimma that the list should be stronger. If you look only at the in's and outs from the list of last year, we've improved. The problem is that too many guys from our 2013 best 22 are injured, on the other side of the hill or are out of form.

Yep agree johnno77 , and some are not far from retiring. I think that has/will throw team balance out until our younger guys can step up. This will see us go back or hover before we start going up the ladder again. But as someone else mentioned in another thread, improvement is rarely if ever in a constant straight line on the graph...

Yeah the puzzling thing is we looked pretty solid in preseason as well so somehow we've lost all that momentum and a lot of players are down on confidence, out of form or just regressing at an alarming rate.

If like Hawks, we nailed at least 3 or 4 out of the 5 picks we had in the top 20, we would have played a lot more finals series'.

Instead, we nailed Deledio and that's it.

I liked Webberley too for some reason - seemed like a nice kid happy to get a chance at AFL level. He kicked a nice goal against Melbourne after coming on as the sub I think? It was the game Dusty kicked an awesome sealer in late in the game.

Don't know why but I liked him more than I did Benny Nason haha
