2010 Nab Draft for Adelaide

In the U18 champs I saw a player from Vic Metro called Kieren Harper. He moved like an AFL footballer and kicked some absolute freakish goals.

Has anyone else seen more of his footy this year? If so I would be interested to know if he has spent any time in the midfield, or is he predominantly a half forward flanker. What kind of pace and endurance does he have?

There was just something about him, and if he was still there at pick 14 I think he may be worth a shot.

Wall- E you've seen a bit of footy this year. I'd be interested in your thoughts. Normally Vic Crow fills us in this time of year. I miss his input.

Curnow won't be able to play until half way through next year.

I think he'll be picked, maybe the GC can arrofd to draft him.

His arm is THAT bad? What are the odds our pick 61 will play in 2011 anyway? Still worth a punt I reckon

What's happened to Vic Crow?

The thing with Harper is he's capable of a lot but doesn't put in on the park much. Too inconsistent at this stage and when he's off, he's really off.

The potential and scope is there but there are players I would put before him at 14 for sure.

Pretty sure Rendell said we might look at picking up some "mature age" players in our 4 spots on the rookie list. Jaensch and Hendo and one other (NOT Schmidt) will be upgraded.

Whoever we end up with Rendell's strike rate for the past two years has been pretty good. Feeling confident we'll end up with some quality young mids.

I wouldn't read too much into it .... just yet. Odds are that they haven't updated the player profiles since the end of the season, noting that all of these players received mid-season promotions.

That said, I would not be the least bit surprised to see these 3 given the nod ahead of Thompson, who could quite easily be our "nominated rookie" should we choose to use him as such.

I was about the post the same thing.

Schmidt, Jaench and Henderson were all added to the main list on the website last season, chances are that they have just removed the delisted/traded players and added Tambling and Jacobs, but have not done any housekeeping (ie moving rookie listed players back to the rookie list).

I would say that after the draft and rookie draft the club will finalise the list and then the website will be updated accordingly. After hearing Rendell on 5AA it seems to be almost a lock that Schmidt wont be upgraded.

Harper's best came in the champs. And his best is good, very good. Lovely size if he becomes a mid, a solid footy brain and he's got tricks. He’s got good pace, is solid in the air, has good goal sense, and lovely skills.

But, he's inconsistent, unable to make an impact throughout the year in the middle for the Rangers and having to spend a lot of his time on the flanks to quell his inability to remain involved in the midfield. Funnily enough, he was one of his biggest critics on this during the combine, openly disclosing to coaches and recruiters in interviews that it was his fault, it’s a weakness and he wants to work on it. I think this will sit well with some coaches.

Ultimately, he won’t slide too far. He’s got too much upside to slide, at the very latest, 30, but could go as high at 10, just depends who wants to be the first to say upside>output.

Personally, I’m banking on better mids being available at our pick. Even a player like Guthrie, who hasn’t got the skills Harper has (he’s not shabby though), has an outstanding work rate, is athletic (Harper probably shades him, just) and is a very good team player. Guthrie would be a Craig wet dream. If one of Prestia, Caddy, Smith slide to our pick, I don’t think we take the gamble on Harper. That said, he’d be on our board of prospects at 14. I just don’t think he’d be higher than others.

Not his arm, but leg. Snapped it I believe. Don’t think it was a Barlow, but a broken leg is still the one year’er. Good think with Ed and this injury, is he wasn’t overly athletic anyway, so you don’t have to worry about the injury hurting his attributes so much.

Personally, though I rate Curnow, I think we’ll go younger at 61. There’s a few boys I’ve got the eye on and could be better wins for the club. Then, I don’t think he makes it to the RD. I think the GC will be more than happy to exercise their new PSD pick clause and take him. They have lots of roster space and can afford to put him on the back burner for a while, while he rehabs.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a couple of guys who were playing VFL/SANFL wind up on our list, especially the latter. Matt’s got a good eye for SANFL rookies, and though I haven’t seen a whole lot of the SANFL guys, there looks to be some talent there in Milera (spelling) and Puopolo etc. There’s also a lot of VFL talent, along with past TAC non draftees and even a smokey or two ;)

Something to look forward to.

I only see U18s games in SA so my selections will be biased:

14: Brodie Smith (Woodville-West Torrens)
61: Matthew Rankine (West Adelaide)

Polec will not be available at 14. Rankine is a 179cm forward/midfielder who oozes X-Factor. Has so much poise and confidence, never panics. Brilliant finisher in front of goal. Gathers the ball very cleanly in both wet and dry conditions (a one-touch player). Uses side-steps and fakes well. Kicking is good for most part. Has a good burst of speed/acceleration.

As for the mature age players, leave for the Rookie List. The only ones I would look at from the mentioned names in the thread are:

Nick Lower (Norwood)
Paul Puopolo (Norwood)
Kane Tenace (Glenelg)
Adam Grocke (Woodville-West Torrens)
Jonathan Giles (Sturt)
Jarrod Silvester (West Adelaide)
Peter Rolfe (South Adelaide)

Only Lower, Tenace and Rolfe may potentially address a need we have on our list.

Coming from a south supporter,Peter Rolfe has class and huge potential but I just think he has not been consistent enough.
He has been to the state screening before so there is obviously some interest there, but with the attributes he has he "should" be able to stand out like a sore thumb in a poorly performed team!
That said if his talent can be harnessed he could improve out of sight!

ADELAIDE
NAB AFL Draft selections:
14, 61, 84, 101, 118
Delistings and retirements: Nathan Bock (Gold Coast), Brett Burton, Brian Donnelly*, Tyson Edwards, Simon Goodwin, Jon Griffin (Fremantle), Jarrhan Jacky, Andrew McLeod
Additions: Sam Jacobs (Carlton), Richard Tambling (Richmond)
Approach: The Crows, having lost Goodwin, McLeod and Edwards, will target midfield talent in the upcoming NAB AFL Draft. Rookies Ricky Henderson, Matthew Jaensch and Luke Thompson have all been elevated to the senior list, but none of these are capable midfielders at this stage in their careers. Tambling will help fill a need for speed, but more run-and-carry-type players are required.
Dream selection: Jared Polec is likely to be long gone by the club's first pick at No.14, but his SA under-18 teammate Brodie Smith ticks a lot of boxes and might still be around the mark. Coach Neil Craig also had a good chat to Sandringham ball magnet Ben Jacobs at the draft combine.

Also noticed this in reguards to the Dogs selections. I would be happy if we snapped up Max with our last pick

But pick 74? What tall will be there at that stage? Could Max Otten, Andy's younger brother, still be sitting there?

Thanks for the reply WALL-e.

Interesting that his best game was the one that everybody saw.

He is still my tip for our pick 14. Talent and speed aren't the issue for him. I have seen enough to suggest that we can make a footballer out of him. In my mind all his other shortcomings can be worked on and overcome. There is so much upside.

You wont let smith slide to port at pick 16, i can see crows picking up Parker, quality genuine mid

Have crows ever picked up a mature age pick that really shined at his new club (schulz Rodan type?)

We've delisted and re-drafted Shirley & Porplyzia. I'm not sure that we've ever selected someone else's reject and turned them around the way you have with Rodan though.

Schmidt was our last re-cycle.

Gill was also rookie listed a couple of times. I think its a very rare occurrence though for a player to be delisted and then to be thrown a lifeline by another club and become a quality player. Most of the time the club gets it right and these players become, at best, just average "role players". Port did really well out of Rodan and Schulz looks like he'll be okay, but he's nothing special.

mmm port do get rejects the most though as well haha (mahoney, (premiership player), davenport)

i disagree with you about schulz i think he'll do quite nicely as stewart and butcher develop

milera with pick 61??

James Thiessen(spelling) was on Richmonds list I think.*
Kym Koster did quite well after be traded to us from the Doggies.*
Brett James became a premiership player after being traded to us from Collingwood.*
Rhett Biglands had a good career with us after being delisted by Port.
Mark Stevens had a successful with after being traded to us from North.*
Matty Robran had a good career with us after starting with Hawthorn.*
Matt Connell had a succesfull career with us after leaving West Coast and won our club champion award (something Rodan has yet to do).*
Premiership players.

Trading is one thing.. What's being discussed here is players who were rejected by their original team, only to "come good" at their new home.
Sorry I thought he was talking about trades as well because he mentioned schultz just before he typed rodan.
