AFL Club
Carlton
MAIN LIST
Anderson
- His first uniterrupted preseason with the club will hopefully pay off. Hes quick and tough and can play tall as well, but his disposals need work, and he really needs to string a lot of good games together to be here next year.
Armfield - Trains hard, would help with midfield rotations, can play on the wing or as a tagger as well as in defence.
Austin - Has shown over the last couple of years he has all the making of being a topline CHB., but is just lacking consistency. His hip clean out at the end of last year wont help not training with the main group over the preseason. The athletic key defender should have a good opportunity wiht Waite spending more time up foward.
Betts - Is now our number one foward with you-know-who gone. Being suspended from the club and training away means that his fitness has been the best its ever been at the club. Could spend a bit more time rotating through the midfield. Should have a big year.
Bower - Gets better every time he plays, and IMO should be our number one defender by the end of the year. Taking nothing away from Jamison, the two will be very important for the club moving foward.
Browne - Theres a lot of competition for his spot in defence. He doesnt have any standout features to his game. Hes just a hard worker who gets the job done.
Carrazzo - Is the perfect bench player , as he is our most versatile medium. Can play inside and outside, can play foward and back, and can fill any need. hes our soldier, our blue collar player, not the most skilled but they are improving every year. Works hard and gives 100 %.
Davies - I question why we drafted him a head of Fitzpatrick or Troy Taylor, but after watching him against Sydney, Im sold. I though he was just an undersized key defender, but hes a hardworking tough player that can run and carry the ball out of defence and has solid skills.
Fisher - For the first time in years he had an injury free preseason, and was looking fitter and stronger then ever. So the last thing he needed was a knee injury. Needs to come back quickly and play some good football because it could be his last year with us.
Gibbs - Finished ninth in the Brownlow, and third in our Best and Fairest, and hes improved his times in the trials over the preseason. It loooks like he could be in for a big year.
Grigg - took a big step backwards last year and didnt start training with the main group until late January. So started a bit behind the 8ball, and his preseason form has been okay. Im not sure where his best position is.
Hadley - Another one of our injury prone payers having an unhindered preseason. He should be fitter then he has been for years so he should be able to step up and be the player he was meant to be.
Hampson - There were rumours that Port offered us pick 10 for him. If this is true, i dont see why we didnt jump at it. If Warnock plays all year, and IMO Kreuzer is our no. 1 ruckman, so Hampson is our third, with Jackobs nipping at his heels. Could be trade bait at years end to GC or Hawks.
Henderson - Hes got the potential but isnt ready. We need to give him time to develop into a topline CHF.
Houlihan - Our most experienced player, he has improved his tackling and work off the ball. Im not sure where he fits, he can be very good, but he has a tendency to go missing at times.
Jackobs - Showed last year he has what it takes, but his fitness needed improvement. Hes been working on that over the preseason, and is in the best shape hes been in since coming to the club. He weighs the same as he did last year, but his skin folds are down.
Jamison - Is all class and his induction into the leadership group is not surprising. Was sorely missed, and an injury free year would be very important.
Johnson - Was recruited becasue he was a good kick. Its just a pity that is all he has to offer. Should play a lot of VFL footy in 2010.
Joseph - Hes an A-grade tagger but only a B-grade midfielder, at best. He needs to be able to shut a player down and hurt them the other way to take the next step. Hates to be beaten, and will work hard all day.
Judd - Its hard to fault a champion, or to work out where improvement can come from. But with an injury-free and longer preseason 2010 could give us a fitter, faster and stronger Chris Judd.
Kerr - Was impressive in the inter-club practice match. Smart, good skills and good indurance. Should play a couple of games this year. Betts, Yarran and Garlett wouldn't want their work rate to drop because he will step straight up.
Kreuzer - Looks ready for a big year, will be interesting to see where he spends most of his time. IMO he will better as a ruckman than a foward. I love that he attacks the footy and the way he approaches his games.
Lucas - Like most of us I was hoping we would draft a tall, and that it would be Talia, but only because I thought Lucas would have gone early in the top ten. He will be a champion for our club, hes got good skills, pace, endurance, agility, and attacks the ball hard.
Mclean - The MC decided at the end of last year that we needed an A-grade insider midfielder to release Judd. Hes a hardworker with good skills, good pace and endurance.
Murphy - Needs to work on his defensive side. His goal kicking last year was fantastic, and it would be good if he could continue with the same accuracy this year. Should make All Australian this year, and IMO very underrated as a No 1 draft pick.
O'hAilpin - We need him fit and in form, he showed in the preseason that he can step up and hold down full foward. With his height, size, aggressiveness and pace he could be almost
unstoppable.
O'keeffe - Will make his debut some time this year - Im hoping sooner rather than later, because his skills and dash from defence would be a major asset. He would be perfect to take the kick-ins.
Robinson - Been one of our best plaers so far in the preseason, and it looks like he will spend more time in the midfielder. A strong tackler, a beautiful kick, loves to kick a goal, and hes my tip for the Rising Star.
Russell - Trained well over the summer, after being in career-best form late last year. So all signs are good that it will continue into 2010.
Scotland - Has had a strong preseason and been a consistent performer since coming to the club, but had a shocking season in 2009. Needs to step up, and is a ball magnet and good user.
Simpson - Our most durable/reliable player. Should be Vice Captain, is an on-field leader, great wingman, good pace and skills, needs to kick more goals.
Thornton - Is one of our best readers of the play, can play tall and small. Works well coming in as the third man, should have a good year as long as Jamison and Bower can stay fit.
Tiller - If he was 5 or 10 cm taller, he would be one of our most promising players. Hes a key foward thats not tall enough. He has good skills, a great mark, and knows where the goals are.
Waite - Looks like he will be ready round one. Hopefully we can keep him on the park. He is a major asset, and has been playing and training well. Hopefully we can settle him down as the centre half foward.
Walker - I still havent lost faith that he could be a super star. He just needs to keep his body right. His hard work and natural talent will help him run into good form.
Warnock - Excellent kick, strong mark, quick and agile, and a great tap ruckman. We need him fit if we are going to take the next step.
Wiggins - I cant work out how he is still on our list. Surely just being a nice bloke cant keep you on an AFL list. Played one good game in nice seasons.
Yarran - Wasnt the best first year. Showed that with hard work that he can make it. Excellent skills and a total freak.

ROOKIES
Cachia -
A tough nut and a hard worker, great at clearances and contested possessions. Good by hand and an excellent decision maker under pressure.
Casboult - Was a standout in the inter-club trial match. Hes a big unit, strong and a good contested mark. Excellent pace, very raw but has a bright future.
Dare - Lacks leg speed but a great reader of the play. Very polished under pressure and always makes the right decisions. Has a great football brain. Im hoping for big things from this kid but I dont think we will see a lot of him this year.
Donaldson - Very raw, but has pace, can read the play well, has a massive leap and is a real competitor.
Ellard - Named BOG just about every week for the Ants and won their B 'n' F. So I cant understnad why he didnt get an appotunity. Hes a hard worker and deserves a chance.
Garlett - A lot of people have said he is too light for AFL, but he is a hard runner and loves to chase, and has freakish skills. Needs more stregnth not weight. In our best 22 IMO.
Tuohy - Athletic, strong hardened body, has good skills for an Irishman, but wont see him in 2010 as he has a bit more development left to go.
White - Not afraid to put his body on the line, and plays with real aggression. Will be a handy backup if our defenders are hit with injuries. Good speed, good overhead, and loves to float foward and kick a goal.

MY BEST 22
B
Russell Jamison Thornton
HB Gibbs Bower Walker
C Simpson Mclean Judd
HF Garlett Waite Robinson
F Betts O'hAilpin Yarran
R Warnock Joseph Murphy
I Kreuzer Lucas Carrazzo Scotland

This is my best 22 because I think Warnock can step up and be our no 1 ruckman, which then gives Kreuzer some flexibility to be our no 2 ruck and float foward, meaning Waite can swing foward and back when needed. Also, with Russell and Walker down back it gives us run out of defence, and Gibbs gives us a good user and class down there. Lucas adds a bit of pace to the midfield rotations as well as Mclean and Joseph giving us a little bit of hardness and an extractor and a tagger. Garlett, Robinson, Betts and Yarran gives us a lot of defensive pressure up foward , as well as X factor. O'hAipin at full foward I think will be dangerous.

I like the look of this "Jackobs"

Shame, the guy put a lot of effort into the review

People who think Gibbs is a HBF are annoying.

People from Tasmania are ugly

Good preview true blue, agree with most points

Hard on Wiggy and soft on McLean as far as pace goes

Are you kidding? Do you even watch the footy?
Wiggins has been a mediocre player for 9, yes 9 seasons! Any other club would of dismissed his services back 4 years ago.

Never watched a game actually but will venture a guess that he has played more than one good game. Might not have even been in the best but might have done what the coach requested of his mediocre charge. I am surprised he lasted this long but there are several on the list I would prune before him if the AFL decided we had to delist half a dozen right now :) Stay calm now

Pretty funny stuff here. w***er :thumbsd:

Better go and ask the players and coach if they've ever watched the footy as well now that the Chief is part of the leadership group at the club. Might want to actually watch him play, watch his courage taking hits to cut off leads, watch him marking everything that comes his way or his ferocious tackline.

Have no idea how we'll go this year. The huge "if" is the forward line. Be great to make the 8 again. However, on the whole, am pretty happy with how the club is progressing and the decisions being made (not that it matters much, because they know a lot more than me to begin with)

At year's end, be great to see improvement from all the players' especially the youngsters:

  • Waite & Walks - these guys have X factor, but because of 2009 injuries we didn't get the full benefit. These 2 could make a huge difference this year
  • Yaz & Betts, Carlos & Hendo. None of these guys have to star, but if they all put in sound years and combine well (and they have from what I've seen), then we're a long way into replacing Fev. I'll take a multi-dimensional forward line over a single target any day of the week, it gives those delivering the ball greater options and places greater pressure on the opposition. Yaz the X factor
  • Mid-field - Gibbs & Murphy. These guys are crackers, but think GIbbs is on the verge of being a real, high echelon weapon
  • Jammo, Thornton & Bower. Thornton gets undeservedly bagged sometimes, he's had to put up with a hell of crap in his career (ie. ball flooding down to the forward line, playing above his weight), but has always given 100%. Now in a half decent team, he's been able to excel a bit more. All these guys generally do the job week in, week out. And know when to defend and attack. Main thing is Jammo not getting injured, he's the key. Would also like to see Waite running from half-back / wing again, provides great run and this is where I think he's most damaging - has the ability to disrupt the opposition's structures. However, depends on how well our forward line functions. Also JR to continue his progression and running ability. Also interested in how Army performs.
  • Ruck still ? Yep, the boys are improving, Kruz gives 120%, but Warnock yet to prove himself. Hamma should also be encouraged. Generally though, compared to other teams, this is our weak spot at the moment. Will develop into a strong spot, but because of the age of your ruckman they still need more time

Other thing about how well we go, all depends on how other teams improve / fall away. Think Sydney will be the big improvers from the bottom half. Tigers will perform better under Hardwick, but have a long way to go
