Strong field for this tournament, all 8 seeds are ranked inside the world’s top 30. Top seed is Elena Dementieva who, along with the 2nd seeded Pennetta, has received a bye first up. I’m eagerly anticipating a couple of first round encounters, most notably Cirstea vs Oudin, a battle of the badly out of form youngsters. Peer vs Cornet is another interesting match, Cornet badly needs a win and given her current level of play and mental strength playing in Paris could either be a big benefit or a hindrance. Safarova vs Paszek is also a potentially interesting match. If Wickmayer can continue on her strong form from then she could be hard to beat here but Dementieva often finds a way to win these types of tournaments. Coverage begins tonight at 12am EST on Eurosport as will be the case most nights this week, so stay tuned to catch the action. God bless Eurosport!

Interesting tournament this one, set in one of the most beautiful locations on the tennis calendar. If I were a player at this event, which isn’t possible for a guy, I’d be hard pressed to stay interested in the tennis. Looking forward to seeing how a few of my favourites perform in this one, hopefully Shvedova can get a couple of wins which she certainly should given her draw, at least a QF showing. Goerges had a decent showing in Melbourne and it’s about time she started capitalising on her talent. Chakvetadze will be looking to turn around her career and she made a winning start yesterday. Lisicki needs to jump start her year and if she plays her best she really should be looking to at least reach the final where Zvonareva will probably be waiting.
