Schiavone played some good shots that first set. Hopefully Wozniacki can win this one and send it into the 3rd though.

How is Wozniacki the world no 1?

She is playing in the quarter final of a Grand Slam tournament, on a court that begs for winners, and she hits ONE WINNER IN THE FIRST SET.

I was hoping she could turn her career around and win a grand slam, but I seriously doubt she will ever win one, unless she improves her game, pushing every ball back but almost incapable of hitting winners isn't going to win you grand slam tournaments.

My understanding is she's ranked 1 because she plays more tournaments then the other "top" female players, and therefore "adds" the points up more then a Clijsters or a Zvonereva does. (Is that right?)

Yes. Wozy and that hot chair umpire are on. Hopefully there's a lot of challenges and the match goes for 3 sets. :thumbsu:

Yeah. Sereana still held 2 Grand slams last year, and hardly plays elsewhere, and that Clijsters also doesnt play too many tournaments(11 last year).

The Woz played 22 tournaments last year in comparison, and won 4 Premier titles, hence why she is number 1. In comparison, Vera Zvonareva played 19, so it wasnt excessive, but compared to the "real" top 2, it was.

Comeback.

Not watching this match but I can see what's going to happen here. Typical of women's tennis.

The lower-ranked player gets up a set and a break and then does her darndest to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Happens too often.

Caro is just consistent, something that 99% of the WTA is not. She captilizes on the shitness and erraticness of female tennis players, which is which is why she won't do very well at the business ends of slams. Everymatch she plays, it's always on the opponents racket. She would need incredible amount of luck to have the likes of Kim, Na Li and even Schiavone to essentially "hit themselves" out of a slam.

Im no way a Caro fan, but Im already feeling sorry for the tidal wave she's going to cop in the coming days.

I'm with you all, I want Woz to win, and win it all, but the way she lost that first set, she wouldn't have a chance agains the other 3 top players left in the tournament (Vera, Kim and Na).

Schiavione looking tired though, although I doubt she'll give up without a fight.

The number 1 ranking these days doesn't indicate the best player, but rather a phenomenal level of consistency and good results week in, week out. It's what got Wozniacki, Jankovic, Safina etc. to number 1, and it's what will probably see Zvonareva get there sooner rather than later.

Players like Clijsters and Williams, while they wouldn't refuse the number 1 ranking, are less concerned about that, and more worried about planning their schedules around Slams, more so than the smaller tournaments.

It doesn't matter who gets to number 1, they will never really be thought of as the best player until they can get a Grand Slam title under their belt. Don't write Wozniacki or Zvonareva off though, I can see both of them winning multiple slams before their careers are over.

Bit harsh on Schiavone to compare her to others on the WTA. She did win a French Open after all, and saved 6 match points last game. The fact she played for 4 hrs and 44 mins last match might have something to do with it.

As i type that, 3 break points.

You can't have a go at Schiavone here, she is obviiosuly struggling after that epic match with Kusnetsova the other day.

It was predicatble that Woz would win this match no matter what, but to be beaten so easy early on by Schiavone wasn't a great sign for what's to come.

At the moment I'd back Li to beat Woz, just based on today's matches more then anything (that is of course if Woz can but Schia away).

I said to my mate yesterday that Li Na was my pick.

Australia Day schedule has been released:

Petra Kvitova(CZE)[25] vs. Vera Zvonareva(RUS)[2]
Agnieszka Radwanska(POL)[12] vs. Kim Clijsters(BEL)[3]
Alexandr Dolgopolov(UKR) vs. Andy Murray(GBR)[5]

Rafael Nadal(ESP)[1] vs. David Ferrer(ESP)[7]
Doubles TBA

This english woman commentator is irritating. She reckons Wozniacki can run all day bla bla bla. Runs through the junior boys like their nothing in practice.

Yeah like there's anyone in the world who won't get tired. ;)

I wouldn't be that happy if I had a night session ticket tomorrow night. They should have put one of the womens 1/4 final on at night before the Nadal Ferrer match. Both night and day session ticket costs the same.

Anyone who follows the tennis year after year should know in advance which sessions are more likely to offer better value.

Personally, I think many sessions offer poor value.

I agree.

Schiavone saves 3 match points and broke Wozniacki. Another match point and Wozniacki takes it. Schiavone would have gained so much respect from people this tournament and hopefully made people realise that her FO victory last year was no fluke. She just does not give up.

The chair umpire ruined match point there, her over rule was plain wrong, and it stopped us from seeing Woz jump around in joy, which is always nice.

In other great "eye candy" news, Azarenka and Kirilenko won their doubles match in 3 sets.

Well done Woz.
Props to Schiavone. Despised her before AO, but she plays a very very entertaining game.

Give me a Rafa slam, and a 1st time winner for the women and i'll be happy.

And i was someone who didnt think Stosur choked.

Maybe Stosur doesn't choke, maybe she doesn't have a susceptible mental game, but she also doesn't have the fight and heart of Schiavone.

I guess all will be revealed for Stosur over the upcoming clay court season.
