Wow some serious changes here

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/104572/default.aspx

Seems this year teams are divided into 6 pools of 3 teams which means GWS plays. These 3 teams play each other on the same night in 40 minute games. The top placed team from each group progresses, along with the 2 best placed runner up sides from the groups.

The competition gets underway on the night of Friday, February 11, when Adelaide, Port Adelaide and Melbourne meet at AAMI Stadium.

All second-round matches, along with the semi-final and grand final, will be full-length games.

Definitely something different. Thoughts??

Not keen on the 40-60 min break for the crows while they wait for their next match. Im sure the AFL have reviewed it, but I hope chances for injury arent higher after they get cold and tight. I guess it will be like at extended half time and they'll need to keep running/stretching etc to be ready to go.

Crows may also substitute a number of players for the Port game I would think.

Like the idea of seeing 3 games 40 minute games in one night and seeing your team play twice. Should allow for some interesting team line ups. Still hate the fact that all interstate clubs play each other except Hawthorn which is the Tassie Hawks anyway...

The top teams in the pool matches go through plus the two best performed from the other 12 teams.... Hmm should end up with three interstate and three Vic teams plus 2 others for the second round which are then full length games.

Like it. Gives teams the incentive to really push for the two wildcard spots.

I think this will be interesting to watch.

And because we are in the Friday night pool, will we be televised?

Massive win for all 3 teams in this rotation IMO.

-We all get to play on the opening Friday --> good exposure and revenue.
-"Rivalry" stuff they always crap on about (see above).
-Melbourne as the third team is a positive and negative for all 3 teams. On one hand Melbourne get the chance to once and for all get rid the AAMI stadium monkey on their back and we get to play a team that is historically poor at our home ground.

I'm worried that the AFL are going to screw us in the main draw because of the NAB cup.

The 'Who Cares' Cup is back, in a new format, but nobody will care.

Anything prior to round 1, is practice and not worth being overly concerned about.

Friday February 11 - Adelaide United v Melbourne Victory (Adelaide Oval) - New Grandstand to be opened.

Fabulous programming AFL, there will be nobody at West Lakes!

Yeah, this has the potential for being a massive disaster, hamstring's galore for the team that has to have a break, which is us (oh so surprisingly:rolleyes:) From a Sports Science/Injury management point of view I really don't know how the AFL managed to justify this:mad: I just hope our SS division are at the top of their game ensuring that our boys are prepared after that 50 min break to come out against a side that is all warmed up and prepared to go.

The other thing I can't believe is the telecast schedule. Now I'll likely go to the Crows game, but 4 matches on Fox and only 2 FTA? WTF surely the AFL would want to show the GC/GWS/Syd match around Australia FTA, give maximum exposure. Its certainly a match I want to see, but no, it gets sold off to FOX, sometimes I just wonder whether 7/10 really did want to win the last TV rights:rolleyes:

Anyways, should make for an interesting spectacle, can't wait:o

Don't worry, they have screwed us by making us the team that plays 1st and 3rd.

Nah mate, there'll be plenty at West Lakes, you underestimate just how starved people will be of Football.

It's a brilliant new marketing strategy! Get two game's worth of Port crowds at the same time and they may even manage to fill the stadium! :D:thumbsu:

Seriously though, it's a pretty goofy idea but at least they're trying something. I'll certainly be there.

Apparently, I have my facts wrong as far as the opening of the Grandstand at Adelaide Oval is concerned.

However, on that Friday night, I'll be shocked if there are more than 10,000 at West Lakes and less than 20,000 at Adelaide Oval.

It's February, and I know where I'll be that night!

It seems the AFL has taken some inspiration from 20/20 cricket, Rugby 7s, etc. for this one. I like it. No one gives a crap about the NAB cup anyway, so why not try something completely different.

Spot on, even if United were bottom I still wouldnt miss a Melbourne game for anything, especially considering its at AO and we are flying this year.

Didnt go to the NAB cup this year, wont be going next year. Might get 4 people there.

Really? I would have thought they'd choose the games which people might actually want to see.
  • Sydney are infamous for tanking their MMC campaigns every year, so that they can tailor their pre-seasons to the player needs, rather than the dopey MMC rules and the higher expectations of teams who stay in the competition to the end.
  • The AFL couldn't even be bothered scheduling GC into R1 of the H&A season, so I don't see why they'd be likely to do them any favours in the MMC.
  • The GC/GWS/Syd matches are being played at Blacktown, which is GWS' home ground. It's probably a fair bet that the GWS supporters will both be at the game anyway.

I haven't missed a Crows game in Adelaide since I can remember but at the moment the United v Victory game is looking like a much better prospect

This scheduling would suit the AFLs argument for relocation to AO!

I think you'll find there'll be a fair bit of interest across the nation in watching the GC's first genuine AFL (albeit NAB Cup) game, especially considering it'll be Gary Ablett's first game for the GC. Then there's the likelihood that both Karmichael Hunt and Israel Falau will both be playing.

On the other side of the coin, considering the substantial leg up the AFL clubs have given these clubs in every other aspect of set up, why would they not want to expose them to FTA even more.

The whole AFL not scheduling GC in for round 1 has been discussed and the GC were quite happy with that, in that they felt it was the fairest way for the bye's etc to be set up.
