Are we now drafting for our seconds?.....

Why not?
That team needs depth too. They need to build a team that can win its share of games. And to be honest, we're in a unique position with that team. We have the ability to use it as a footballers factory.

There is more of a chance that a midfield type player can show substance/promise within 18 months than there is for a tall.
(I wouldn't mind seeing the % of talls that have made it from a rookie list to a main list. I'm tipping it's low)

And in a worst case scenario if we can't get that rookie onto the list then maybe we use them to get a 'decent' draft pick. Ala Mumford.

We need to cultivate draft picks. Just as Wells did this year and in 09.
If Geelongs masterplan comes off and we do stay near the top for a very long time then the lack of quality draft picks will catch up with us sooner or later.

Unless there is a plan.

Oh. Maybe we need to have a word with Tom. Tell him to have a crap year this year so any hype goes away :)

Personally, I don't understand where that thought is coming from. I counted 16 players (see below) that are around the 190cm mark that will/can play off the HBF. Granted, some are iffy, but these players have been drafted with versatility as a key aspect.

Hamling, Joel 194cm 80kg
Bartel, Jimmy 187cm 88kg
....
Weston, Jack 189cm 88kg

Jack Weston was delisted so you cannot include him.

And what about Burbury on that list!!

A 186 rookie HFF that's had 1 VFL season to get a taste, is that what you call a Scarlett type??
Unreal! :D

And Vinum, the masterplan is, to elevate one of those rookie talls to save our arses, just the opposite of your arguement,.......by the way, Bathie and Walker have had only 1 solitary season of reserves grade as well!
Not such a great situation IMO. Hopfully we don't get injuries to our taller backs.

Burbury, George 186cm 78kg
Corey, Joel 191cm 89kg
Duncan, Mitchell 187cm 82kg
Enright, Corey 187cm 91kg
Gillies, Thomas 192cm 88kg
Guthrie, Cameron 186cm 79kg
Horlin-Smith, George 186cm 78kg
Mackie, Andrew 192cm 87kg
Menzel, Daniel 188cm 79kg
Murdoch, Jordan 190cm 80kg
Scarlett, Matthew 192cm 94kg
Smedts, Billie 189cm 76kg
Taylor, Harry 193cm 92kg
Weston, Jack 189cm 88kg

I'll give you the ones in red the rest are either untried, will miss most of the season (Menzel)or are no longer on the list,(Weston).

They are still going to be a raw as hell rookie that isn't going to be near a Scarlett type

Clubs never like picking 193cm flankers because they often fall between the cracks. The ones that make it are usually the loose man types like Mackie and Birchall and nothing like Scarlett at all. Scarlett and Fletcher have just switched roles towards the end of their careers.

Of the players we had a chance to pick and didn't from both drafts, the only player that slipped through that fits the bill for mine is Lockyer.

What about 190, thought Darrou......anyhow whatever!

Of course they're raw, 18yr olds, but you gotta start somewhere.

Because Wells didn't think there was one good enough to Rookie!!!

This seems pretty close to the mark!

BTW...I dont think there is any such thing as a " Scarlett type ". As for future backmen, young Billie should be underlined. Will play many games for Geelong injury notwithstanding.

YYYYYes??............, he didn't!

There are people with other opinions, many have stated Wells' poor rookie history, I know he's Mr infalibility in the eyes of some, but you gotta let others speak their minds.
I think there's a good case to be made for the alternative!

I don't know why everyone thinks Wells made the decision to go small.
They had a month between the ND and PSD. They (the club) would have looked hard at vulnerabilities in the list.

You can argue that they should have gone tall in the ND if you want. But not in the PSD.

I like what you had to say earlier in the thread VC regarding strengthening and creating balance in the VFL side through the PSD, makes sense, you need the structure to practice the drills in real games to have players ready to step up seamlessly when required to the first 22.
Also it's a great advantage if they play deep into September and having all your possible replacement players in peek physical and match fit condition.

I reckon the selection of Eardley and Sherringham means they might be hoping to use the likes of Guthrie, Motlop, Cowan etc more often in a more senior role 2012.

'Ok', I've been whinging bout the non-selection of a sizable defender, but can see the elevation of either Walker or Bathie more probable now!
Both big guys.

Glad of that coz it gives the likes of Tommy L, Harry and Scarlo some chopout, which they richly deserve.
Our back six are the reason for our continual success, our percentage has always been fantastic over 5-6years now, so I'm hoping there's support coming 2012.

I think you're right here meto. Guthrie will certainly play games this year. He was emergency for the GF and is obviously earmarked for greater things.

2012 is a big year for young Motlop, and Cowan looks a goer. I also have very high hopes for Smedts.....a Rising star nomination for sure!!

I havent seen Bathie or Walker but given selections you would think they, along with Gillies are seen as options for senior games this year. Bathie's history suggests he is an elite athlete and he certainly looks like a big strong boy.

With Kersten and Murdoch ( put a ** next to him too ) it looks like an exciting season at Geelong.
