Opinion 2011 Top 50

Appreciate the posting eagles. Haven't been watching much over the past few weeks so I'll need the help.

Swans v Blues.

Murphy - What more can you say, running away with the no.1 spot at the moment. Could probably play like crap for the next weeks and still hold it. As much as I love Judd, I hope he wins the B&F this year.

Judd - Solid by his standards and was well held for half the game. Not a bad game but not a game breaking game.

Scotland - Good. Yarran was the standout running out of defence so it probably overshadowed Scotland's game but he was good. Maybe move up.

Walker - Very good early on and was excellent as a hit up forward on the wing. Maybe it's time he came in. Definitely in the top 60 anyway.

Jamison - Did his job I guess, our forward line has been a shambles all year and Jamison just kicked back at FB.

Goodes - Had him 4th best for us. Tried to make things happen and showed how much better he would be in the middle. Time to end his career as a forward.

Bolton - Struggled today. Battled away, as always, but the Blues pressure was almost too much for him to get on top. Quiet game.

O'Keefe - Solid. Didn't notice him as much as previous weeks but was one of our better players.

Mumford - Shocking, showed he has missed the last few weeks with injury. Will drop out of the top 50.

Kennedy was excellent and probably moves ahead of Mumford as our 4th best player this year. Grundy was ok.

So pending WC game. Robert Murphy, Walker, Enright are the names I'm considering to come in.

1. Murphy

Pendlebury, Franklin, Selwood, Watson, Thomas, Cox, Mitchell, Ablett and Thompson would be my top 10, struggling with the order though. Not sure Franklin is still the second best player anymore. Has Mitchell gone ahead of him?

Agree with nearly all of this except the Goodes remarks. Got smashed by Gibbs today and looked disinterested for a large part.

My ten (from your list) would be something like:
1. Murphy
2. Pendlebury
3. Cox
4. Watson
5. Franklin
6. Mitchell
7. Thomas
8. Thompson
9. Selwood
10. Ablett

With Judd, Griffen and Fyfe the next few.

Bah, forgot Judd. He's in the 10.

Goodes was one of our best, of a bad lot though. Wouldn't say he was smashed at all.

Thought Judd would be in the ten. I'd have him 6th on my list above, just ahead of Mitchell.

The fact that Goodes was one of your best says something about how you were outgunned. Was really only in the game early in the second and in the middle parts of the last. Did have an impact on the team and lifted them once or twice. His opponent was in the top three on the ground though.

Yeah, their performance against Geelong was enough for me to consider them a contender. Today they just proved that Sydney aren't a top 4 team and that Kreuzer makes them more of a contender. Throw in Waite and they are a damn good team.

Gibbs was good again. Kreuzer clear BOG for me. Murphy, Walker and Yarran were better than Gibbs imo.

Anyway, Goodes was decent but probably falls a bit again.

Kreuzer and Gibbs were a clear top two for mine, followed by Walker, Gibbs than Yarran for mine.

Not sure where you rate him but Gibbs has to be close. Had a few quiet weeks after a great first fortnight, but for the last 6 weeks or so he's shut down a player while winning the footy himself. Goodes, Johnson, Goddard, Moloney, Gray, not sure he played on vs Brisbane, Goodes again today and beat them all quite convincingly.

As for Goodes, while he was a solid 4 quarter performer, he looked a potential game breaker when he moved into the middle and was certainly influential. Thought he was one of Sydney's better players.

1. Murphy
2. Judd
3. Jamison
4. Scotland
-------------
5. Walker/Gibbs (both wouldn't look out of place in the top 50).

I've had Gibbs as an unlucky for about 5 weeks now. Had that rubbish patch early as you said but other than that he has been very good. Who do you rate better this year? Walker or Gibbs?

Garlett has fallen away a bit. Still doing his job well though.

Yeah, Garlett's fallen away. Still contributing each week with his 2 or 3 goals but Gibbs, Walker, Robinson and Yarran have all probably jumped him at this stage.

Would have Gibbs ahead of Walker though both have been very good. Walker's been fairly consistent though it's probably only his last 3 weeks (+ 1 or 2 games earlier in the season) that he's really starting to shine.

Gibbs isn't flashy but he's just so reliable. As Ratten himself said, he cops some unfair criticisms because of how people expect him to play but he's become our Mr Fixit. If there's a job that needs doing, Gibbs is our go to man and he'll do it 9 times out of 10.

He has been getting as much attention for it, but Ablett is still absolutely tearing it up, and without much help. Would be in my Top 5. He's had a couple of quietish ones early, but so has everybody else, and his best games have been better than anybody elses. His run of form recently has been nothing short of outstanding.

I'm wondering where you would have Houli at the moment? I feel like he's had a considerably better year than Nahas (but that may just because of recent form), and Nahas was in your unluckies.

my top lucky 13

1 - Pendlebury
2 - Murphy
3 - Ablett
4 - Judd
5 - Cox
6 - Franklin
7 - Selwood
8 - Mitchell
9 - Watson
10 - Swan
11 - Swallow
12 - Thomas
13 - S Thompson

watson and swan haven't been helped by injuries

Spluff, Nahas had that awesome 4-5 weeks early on and once again I'm slow with the unluckies list. Houli has gone ahead now. Guys like Rance, Foley and Jackson having good seasons imo.

Good 12 BT. Only one I'd question is Swan. I might be judging him by his standards, rather than comp standards, but I'd have him around 30ish based on this year. I might be way too harsh though.

Swan's first few weeks were arguably the work of a #1 player, but since then agreed he's been around the 30 mark. Have no doubt he'll recapture the magic.
My top 5 would probably be:

1. Ablett
2. Pendlebury
3. Murphy
4. Franklin
5. Cox

I'd probably have Judd somewhere in the 7-10 range

The list is great but I can't believe how much Judd is underrated, even by Carlton fans. Maybe it's because I only watch him on TV, but IMO he's still the most influential player in the game.

My Top 10:

1. Judd
2. Ablett
3. Pendlebury
4. Cox
5. Murphy
6. Franklin
7. Mitchell
8. Wells
9. Swan
10. Bartel

Judd's not even the best player in his own team this year.

I think it was just a chance to put Wells inside the Top 10 players in the league, really.

His list just doesn't look right IMO.

My quick top 10

1. Murphy
2. Franklin
3. Pendlebury
4. Ablett
5. Mitchell
6. Cox
7. Watson
8. Selwood
9. Thompson
10. Fyfe

1 Marc Murphy (Carlton)
2 Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood)
3 Gary Ablett (Gold Coast)
4 Lance Franklin (Hawthorn)
5 Chris Judd (Carlton)
6 Dean Cox (West Coast)
7 Sam Mitchell (Hawthorn)
8 Jobe Watson (Essendon)
9 Dale Thomas (Collingwood)
10 Joel Selwood (Geelong)
11 Scott Thompson (Adelaide)
12 James Kelly (Geelong)
13 Ryan Griffen (Western Bulldogs)
14 Daniel Wells (North Melbourne)
15 Nathan Fyfe (Fremantle)
16 Andrew Swallow (North Melbourne)
17 Luke McPharlin (Fremantle)
18 Trent Cotchin (Richmond)
19 David Mundy (Fremantle)
20 Sam Fisher (St Kilda)
21 Heath Shaw (Collingwood)
22 Michael Jamison (Carlton)
23 Matthew Scarlett (Geelong)
24 Travis Cloke (Collingwood)
25 Jimmy Bartel (Geelong)
26 Jude Bolton (Sydney)
27 Aaron Sandilands (Fremantle)
28 Dustin Martin (Richmond)
29 Michael Jamison (Carlton)
30 Brent Moloney (Melbourne)
31 Brett Deledio (Richmond)
32 Dane Swan (Collingwood)

I'll do that to go one with. Seem to be struggling a bit after 32. As I said originally, I'll go back to doing it weekly, with the movements but until the financial year is over I'm too busy.

Might be some odd ones from that list so tell me if I'm way off with some. For the rest of the 50 it seems that it's time for a shakeup. Plenty of examples where a certain player has probably fallen away or been overtaken by a teammates.

eg.

Birchall > Gibson/Sewell?
Murphy > Boyd

WC are one of the hardest now. Might be underrating Priddis, probably 33rd. Hurn, Rosa, playing well. Glass solid. Kerr looking like the Kerr of old. Kennedy will stay in the 50.

Also, Barnzy is Jack Riewoldt a top 50 player? Kicking the goals but doesn't seem to be in the best that much this year?

Love Nat Fyfe and all but he's not a top 10 player... yet
Was trying to spice it up a bit to be honest.

Would have him ahead of Judd on performance and on par with say Thomas and Griffin in terms of how importance his great performances are to his team actually winning.

Definitely think he's worth a mention, and I've watched a lot of their Sunday matches, of which Freo seem to be getting a lot of lately.
