This season we have been beaten by the top 5 teams quite comfortably. Drew with 6th, split series against 7th and 8th. Taken out 9th & 10th. Pretty good result. On the flip side we have lost to 16 & 17th. What our 2011 team lacks is consistency and experience.

Question i have is can the 2011 team make finals with another pre-season under their belt if we add a ruckman? What will our best 22 look like next year?

B: Grimes Rance Dea
HB: Houli Astbury Batchelor
C: Deledio Martin Newman
HF: Morton Griffiths Nahas
F: Vickery Riewoldt King
R: Graham Cotchin Foley
INT: Edwards Jackson Conca
SUB: Grigg

Put Griffiths in as i think he will get first crack at the job. Astbury i believe internally is preferred to Post. Newman moves up to wing and eventually will have his starting 18 spot taken by Conca.

Obviously we will have some new recruits as well from the draft. Graham will be replaced by Maric. TAC cup future stars while really only picking Victorians has Kavanagh lasting to 14. Could last till 18 if u add guys from other states in front. Morris could come in and help Dea out. One plays lock down defender the other plays run-with midfield role instead of Jacko. We need another small forward like Tipungwuti to put pressure on King. Second rounder needs to go to another midfielder or take a punt on the KPF Manson.

This team can and should be pushing finals next year with another year under their belt and a few draftees thrown in.

Im so over these "best 22" threads. We dont even know who will be delisted and who we will be picking up yet.

What i was getting at is can this years list actually be developed without too many additions. Its pretty obvious we are getting a ruckman, just we don't know who. With all the kids we have drafted and their natural improvement is the current list good enough to make finals without any additions outside a competitive ruck.

The way I see it, we can pretty much finish 9th, 11th or 12th this year. The thing is, regardless of where we actually finish, I think we're pretty much worthy of 11th-12th. So even if we end up finishing 9th, I still think we're probably another season away from being top 8 material, unless we get some more vast improvement from several players next year, which might see us fall into the lower part of the eight.

The important thing to look at IMO is our percentage. We have gone from around 73 last year to around 86 this year. That's a good natural rate of progression, and we'd hope to lift again next year, in to the mid 90s approx. That suggest a finish around 9th. This year our points against is about the same as last year, where our points for has increased by about 200. We obviously need to stop leaking goals. I believe a lot of that has to do with fitness base. It also reflects somewhat on personnel. There is no doubt we need to find another couple of first 22 players in each of the next couple of years.

I just hope people don't start going feral if we do finish ninth and end up around the same position next year. The fact is, ninth this year would quite clearly flatter us.

Agree that 9th flatters us. Would only take 9.5 wins to get there. We have won 12 before and finished the same. The thing is if we stick to our structures we are CAPABLE of beating anyone outside the top 5 plus maybe West Coast in Melbourne if we play well. As of next year thats 12 teams we are able to beat with our current list. We won't win them all obviously but if we get draw some of the poor teams twice we should make it next year. Put a few additions in like a ruckman, another midfielder, another small defender (Morris) and hoping a genuine crumbing forward and we should improve.

EDIT: By my counting there are 7 players in the team i wrote that didn't play yesterday. Plus another 3 from this draft/trade that i think will come in. Nearly half a new team.

Looking at this team, it's really young. I know Jackson will be in it next year, but I'd like to see the youngsters stepping up to boot him out of the 22.

As long as Graham is not on the list, and a proper Ruckman is, I'd be happy to go around next year with what we've got now.
