i will clarify they were referring to macro p at pick 23 .Yes leon did also say he had spoken to brisbane and told the caller brisbane were very happy with their picks what else would they say . i personally believe in terms of skill macro p was not worth pick 23 . i could be proven wrong only time will tell ,wether quigs pick of tim obrien ends up a better choice. i think Quigs deserves credit for his choice in the phantom draft

I have a lot of faith in Graham Hadley. He is now based with his family in WA and without a doubt he would have seen Marco many times. You cannot get a good read off those highlights tapes because they make anyone look good. Give Marco a few years before you lose it because SEN didn't say he was the best footballer in the land!

What do you mean by "Quigs deserves credit for his choice"? Should our recruiting staff be looking at his phantom draft before they decide on who to draft? Or would that be you now?

Also, you made a claim during trade week that Pat Karnezis would be leaving the club to go to Carlton. Have you or as you said you "high up" official father spoken to Mick Malthouse about getting Pat to the club???

Is that Micro's big brother?o_O

the real truth is 99% of us have no bloody idea about any of these kids , we gather opinions from phantom drafts and comments on this forum from others who have no idea and then form our opinion and treat them as facts.

howabout we leave it to experts like Kerr and Hadley , if they pick a particular player over another then there is a dam good reason

welcome to the 3 new lions , i dont give a bugger who you are as long as you give your all for this club and help us to become stronger

Kerr-

Interesting to see us say Paparone could be back or forward,.

“Paprone will be a really good connector for us into the back line or the forward line… and Michael Close is a centre half forward who is really competitive.”

Not sure i read it that way CD, my read is that he will be a high leading HFF, that will get the ball coming out of the backline, and then send it in to the forward line, thus connecting the backline to the forward line.

If you read my first post, I'm a big wrap for his talent and didn't mention his homesickness at all.

I'm just giving you what I thought could be interesting facts.

After several years of supporters of West Coast popping on with similar facts about Rich, plus the Richmond boys and Karnezis, not to mention Essendon guys with Rischi, etc, some of us end up a bit fast on the trigger finger when similar posts are made these days. :)

Someone's probably already pointed it out, but the versatility angle showed up again last night. All our draftees had spent time in multiple positions (mid/fwd, fwd/def, fwd/def/ruck) according to the draft notes and by the sounds of it are capable in each. Talls with great endurance are also becoming an interesting feature of our team. I suspect the club feels that it's easier to build a structure and team plans around the strengths and weaknesses of the team more easily than getting to that elite level of endurance.

I don't venture onto bigfooty much these days, but it's always entertaining to come on here and read peoples' opinions about our Draft choices.

And for those staunch critics who believe the club has ruined it's future, I can only offer the following:

Q: Why did the Club overlook the likes of bigfooty favourites Tim O'Brien, Mason Shaw, Tim Membrey, Tanner Smith etc?

A: Because they rated Paparone and Close as better prospect.

Relatively simple in theory.

Only time will tell if this was the right decision, but I'd prefer to put my trust in the guys who watch these players live every second week, as opposed to those who read 20 Phantom Drafts and become instant experts.

I admit that I can get swayed by things too. I really liked the prospect of Hrovat. Why? Because I read a couple of glowing articles on him which convinced me he would be the next Sammy Mitchell. Plus, his 30-second highlight reel was awesome.

But keep the comments coming - that's what a forum is all about (and it makes for great reading).

Pretty happy with the direction we took with our draftees, all filled needs in my opinion, and that's including Mayes. Can't really comment on the players themselves as I don't really know much, but the write-ups about them sound promising. Paparone sure has an awkward kicking style though, not a fan of that two handed drop. I've seen Close once or twice this year, and I thought he wasn't too bad.

Our last two picks may have been outside of the general consensus on BF but it's happened before. Remember last year when we took Yeo and many people didn't really know who he was (even Quigley didn't have him in his main draft), and he's looking pretty good so far.

Not to mention the 2008 draft, where Matt Burgan on afl.com.au (who normally had a pretty good mock draft because of the info he had) had Rich going high, but then Redden at 57 and Banfield undrafted. In 2010, I'm quite sure Karnezis was taken higher than expected as well.

Also, for those who believe the Club is overstocked with tall forward options, here's a list of those at our disposal before the Draft...

FORWARDS (190cm+)Billy Longer - more of a ruckman, but can hopefully develop into a part-time forward
Brent Staker - coming off two knee recos, and turns 29 next season
Jonathan Brown - as much as we love him, has probably only got a couple of seasons left
Jordan Lisle - still developing, but doesn't strike me as the 'White Knight' up forward just yet
Patrick Karnezis - good third tall option, but is apparently homesick?
Aaron Cornelius - lucky not to be delisted in my opinion
Sam Michael - very raw, could be anything or nothing

This list doesn't give me a great deal of confidence heading towards Brownies inevitable end. So why not take a punt on a couple more big blokes in the hope that at least one turns out to be half decent...

Would've been great to get more of an inside mid at some point but they didn't fall our way. Will have to continue to rely on Redden and Rocky.

I'm not gonna comment on our drafting. I know nothing about these kids.

My normal draft prep involves reading Emma Quayle's stuff having a look at Quigley's comments and then hitching my wagon to a kid they suggest as the third or fourth best/ most likely.

I then act like I know what I'm on about, feeding back mundane comments about my choice that others have made until it becomes a self perpetuating feedback loop of ill informed self justification, secure in the knowledge that I'm not a sheep because I am backing someone different to Quig's pick.

This year I figured.... Just.... No.

Excited to have three new young lions though.

I little dis-heartening at the amount of people who got hounded last night for having an opinion on the draft.

People are allowed to write what they think, Whether it's about Mayes' face or the odd selections of Paparone/Close.

So many bullies in here that don't even know it.

For the record, I did jump the gun last night on the whole '3 forwards' after realizing we will probably get Conway next year and I am pleased with Mayes/Paparone but Close is a project and will take time before you can really assess him.

BS17, I would have thought that pretty much every kid, in every draft, taken from about 20 onwards (maybe earlier) is a "project".

None of the kids we have taken, or passed on, are certainties to be good players so it "will take time before you can really assess (them)".

As I see it, with any draft, if your first pick lives up to expectations and really improves your team then anything you get out of your later picks is essentially a bonus. The 2008 draft for us is a great example of this, but most of your money is riding on your first pick and I am happy to have mine on Mayes at this stage. If Mayes fires and either of MP or Close steps up we will have done brilliantly - the odds of that are pretty good in my opinion.

We've got the next Sam Mitchell already...the DZ model.

By 'project' I mean he will probably need more time to develop, Look at someone like Daniel Merrett, who for example started as a forward then went back and took a few years to get going.

The general consensus is that KPP take longer, He is more of a KPP then Paparone in my eyes.

Whilst Mayes/Paparone will probably slot into their roles quicker.

Just my opinion on Close.

We drafted these players last night. Let's at least give the KPP a season at minimum to judge them. Quigley do you thing Mayes is ready made?

One thing I like about Paparone is that Graeme Hadley has been watching him develop his footy ability for a few years now...I don't mind the fact that he was rated WA's best at the championships as well.

I'd wait and see how Moloney fits in before getting too disappointed.

Nah, I'm disappointed. Was really hoping someone like Lonergan or Hrovat would fall to us at 23. Hrovat almost got there.

It seems like those 15-20 players that everyone rated highly ran out just before we got our second pick.

Given Kerr's comments about always expecting to draft Pappa (I've already picked a nickname) and Close it would have been interesting if Hrovat had slid to us, whether we would have taken him. If we hadn't I think I might struggled to contain my disappointment.

It might just be because our lack of drafting KPPs in recent times but I'm very excited about watching Pappa and Closey develop.

Wow, there is some talent left behind for the rookie draft. Notably Garlett and Colquhoun... rookie Josh Toy for the lols?
