Any chance of picking up Nathan Hrovat?
Bloody well hope so. I rate the kid so highly I wouldnt be upset if we took him at pick 8. He will be a player you cant go wrong with IMO. Whichever team gets him (PLEASE FOOTY GODS BRISBANE) has a gem on their hands.

Yeah Dayle Garlett is my pick. Does anybody on here seriously not want this guy? I mean off field concerns aside he is the next Cyril Rioli and we could definitely use a Cyril in our side.

Without casting the off field concerns aside he could be the next Damian Cupido.

Sounds like it will come down to a pysch assessment. Broadly speaking to make it as a player you need to have both talent and strength of mind. Everyone agrees he has the former, but he would have to be deemed to have the latter as well for me to give me the tick of approval.

Dayle Gartlett has a ton of talent no doubt about it, he could be anything. i personally think that he is a top 10 pick easily, and I really rate his inside game and ability to win the ball one on one, as well as his obvious outside skill and goal kicking ability. He will go high in the phantom drafts and I rate him highly, but he could easily slide in the actual draft due to other reasons besides talent, such as personal drive etc. Clubs get to see all the psych tests and interview the players, most people on here wouldn't have talked to him or don't know him personally and just rely on what is written by the media.

Liam McBean is probably an early second round pick, the talent is there as I have stated before, but I am also a little wary of him, and it wouldn't surprise if he was a bust at AFL level, and a player that is shunted between positions without ever finding his niche.

On who the real hard players are in this draft, I would rate the top 5 as:
1. Viney - real hard inside player, going to Demons unfortunately
2. Wines - has a bit of a hard streak about him, is probably worth a pick between 7 and 12
3. Stringer - really hits the packs hard and looks to physically monster opponents, not worth a top 10 pick imo unless tests very well. I think he will end up a CHF.
4. Valustin - He is a hard strong competitive player, not worth a top 15 pick imo.
5. Membrey - he is a really aggressive forward option, super strong at the contest and tackles hard and with intent. Needs to test well to go high. More of a second round prospect.

Nathan Hrovat is a good player but I don't think of him as a high draft pick, he is a midget at 173cm and that will effect him as an inside player at AFL. To succeed at that height now you need to have great speed and agility, or be very strong around the core. I don't see Hrovat as having these qualities which means he could slide due to his troubles converting his game at AFL level against the bigger stronger bodies. He would have a big risk and question mark associated with him.

Mooted three way trade

Tom Dyson from GWS to Richmond for pick 9
Pick 9 and mini draft pick from GWS to the Western Bulldogs for pick five and six.

Which would change the draft order to:

Minidraft pick 1: Western Bulldogs
Minidraft pick 2: Yet to be determined
pick 1: GWS
pick 2: Gold Coast
pick 3: Melbourne
pick 4: Melbourne
pick 5: GWS
pick 6: GWS
pick 7: Port Adelaide
pick 8: Brisbane
pick 9: Western Bulldogs
pick 10: Essendon

Does that make any difference to us in terms of a) the value of the remaining minidraft pick and b) what we do with pick 8?

Can't see GWS going for it. They'd want to make a statement on homesick players and I don't see why they wouldn't back themselves to turn Dyson around, unless they view his off-field stuff as a hindrance to the rest of the playing group.

If it did come off, it would mean that GWS would almost certainly take Grundy with one of their picks.

If you break down the trade, the Bulldogs get MD1 for a first rounder and a downgrade of three picks.
Richmond gets Tyson for pick 9.
GWS only gets a first rounder for MD1.
GWS only gets a first rounder below where they took him last year for Tyson.

GWS is getting screwed every which way. There's no way they'd take that.

Have obviously forgotten this man.

"It is absolutely not going to happen," Giants football chief Graeme Allan said.
Ahh yes the old "It is absolutely not going to happen,"
Would you believe “It is absolutely not going to happen," within the first two hours of trade period commencing.;)

Thankfully the Giants learnt from the Lions' mistakes and Gubby doesn't have sole control of contracts/trading - Silvagni is the Kerr-equivalent. ;)

Having watched YJFL games for about 20 years, there were a couple of kids that you knew would be guns barring injury - Luke Power, Dan Hanneberry, Luke Shuey, Mat Kreuser .. this year there are a couple - Macrae and Hrovat. Nathan is very solid so no issues there - I'd compare him with K. Jack and S Mitchell. Dont know about 1st round but he's ready to go. Great if we could get him as he'd compliment Black / Rich in and under.

From the time Rob Kerr took over we have followed a no risk policy while drafting.

Didn't pick Heppell on the back of some knee Groin injury rumours and went for a less risky option of Polec
We had Darling on the table for Pick 25, but chose Karnezis

I would say we are less likely to go for Garlett with our first pick, with off field speculations hanging over his head and so many strong options still available. I wish we take the risk considering what I have read about this guy, but club recruiting pattern suggest we are likely to skip past this one.

Has this been confirmed anywhere? or is that a rumour about why we didn't pick him? Both players were rated very high and IIRC Polec was always rated higher than Heppell, who had a really good finish to the year.

We were firming on Heppell (or I got brainwashed by reading TBD's posts around this time :D), but there were defintely rumours about his knee Groin prior to draft day.

This was not confirmed by the club, but Heppell did mention in his interview post drafting "about people ringing him regarding his knee and he was forced to repeat himself that there was nothing wrong" etc.

Sorry, Groin it is. From Wiki - I'll add Heppell's interview link if I find it

"AFL career
Despite his performance in the Grand Final, Heppell was an impressive performer at the AFL Draft Camp,[8] and was still touted by many as being a potential top five draft pick[9] in the 2010 AFL Draft, with some even claiming he would go as high as top three.[6] Most speculation suggested that the Brisbane Lions would select Heppell,[9] who with his "silky"[4] skills and raking left foot, models his style on the Lions' own Josh Drummond.[2] In the week before the draft, however, a rumour, which Heppell denied, began circulating that he was suffering from groin problems.[9] Due to this, Essendon, which had the eighth selection, became interested in him, and Heppell spoke to new Essendon coach, James Hird, days before the draft.[4] Hird, who claimed he had been interested in Heppell for months, believed that Heppell would be selected well before Essendon had the chance to draft him, but when Heppell did slide back due to groin concerns, Essendon were only too happy to select Heppell, who had supported the Bombers as a child and had "idolised" Hird when he was growing up.[4] "

Any one have any info on any mature aged rookies we could be targetting???

One Im very keen on is Dean towers from the VFL, a quick outside mid...what kinda draft pick would we be looking at to secure him ????

No doubt we had Heppell as one of our options for pick 5 but I don't think it was any groin issues that stopped us drafting him.

Just found what Kerr said after the draft

Jared is going to be able to provide us with plenty of run and carry and really add something to our line up. We didn't make the decision on Jared until late. When we had a hard look at our list and looked at what we needed the most, Jared was probably the best fit of the group in terms of the players that were going to be available.

"It was a real toss up between Dyson (Heppell) and Jared. Dyson is a terrific player and will have a fantastic career. We just thought from a pure list management perspective that Jared fitted our needs just a little better.

Interesting as I always thought when you have a top 5 pick its all about best available not what your needs are.

Nice find. It's weird he has mentioned list management as the reason.
If it really came down to a toss up, Heppell's family base in GC would have made our choice easier I would think.
