Anyone hear or know more about this?

West Coast are poised to take advantage of changes to the veterans' allowance by freeing up an extra $700,000 in their salary cap to help shore up a sustained premiership challenge. The Eagles will have the capacity to class seven players as veterans under a revised system being introduced for 2013. Under the option, the club will be allowed to place up to $100,000 of each veteran's salary outside of its cap.

I don't think it will help us as we will likely only leave Pav and Sandi on the Vet's list next year. Mcpharlin and Grover are the other two veterans but Grover will likely retire. Mundy will be a veteran in 2014, Johnson possibly too as I think they came on the list at the same time.

This part was interesting in the article

Rule changes mean a player will now need to have completed 10 years of service at the one club to qualify for veteran status, with the requirement of also needing to be 30 or older scrapped.

The AFL still haven't made the new veterans rule clear. I think it would be unfair to completely change the rule considering clubs would've made plans based on those rules, so I think the new rule is just an amendment. Under the old rule total veteran payments were divided by the amount of veterans to determine what wasn't included in the salary cap. I think the new rule just ensures a minimum of 100k for each veteran.

Say a team like the cats has 7 veterans getting paid a total of 2.1 million a year. Under the old rule there exemption would be 2,100,000/7 = 300K outside the cap, about 43k per player. The new rule brings that 43k up to 100k per player and a total of 700k outside the cap.

Where as a team like Freo might have Sandi and Pav getting paid 1.6 million (due to back ending). The old rule would have 1,600,000/2 = 800K outside the cap, or 400k per player. Hopefully the new rule doesn't apply otherwise we'd only get 200k outside the cap.

If the old rule is kept it could see Grover forced out the door. Because a player can't be removed from the veterans list having Pav, Sandi and Grover on the veterans list would see us worse off than if we just had Sandi and Pav. Assuming salaries of Pav 800k, Sandi 800, Grover 200k the old rule would have a exemptions of 1,800,000/3 = 600k outside the cap with Sand, Pav and Grover or 1,600,000/2 = 800k outside the cap with just Pav and Sandi. Hopefully that all makes sense :p
