Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

Who would be the best CHB/FB type in this draft. I assume we will have a pick in the top 10 and am wondering what kind of type would be available?

Also are there going to be plenty of quality mids in this draft or is it more a draft for talls?

Very early days, but there don't seem to be any massive early kpd standouts in the TAC this year, not to the level of blokes like Hurley/Hansen at the start of their u18 years anyway. Plowman is a very very good defender but his size is a bit marginal at 190cm. Not to say that someone won't pop up out of nowhere though - defenders often emerge over the course of the year as 2nd string tall forwards etc have a go in a new position.

There should be plenty of mids as well as talls in the draft. Inside, outside, big-bodied, fast - name your preference, you should be able to find a bloke to fit. It looks a very deep and well-rounded group to me, judging by what I've seen at this stupidly early time of the year.

After following YJFL for 10 years, a couple of players should be IMO on the radar.

Ned Walmsley - athletic solid forward ( Glen Iris )
Ryan Exon - quick clever brave mid ( Warrandyte )
Jack MacRae - smart skilled utility ( Kew Rovers )
Cameron Banfield - smart super-skilled utility ( Ivanhoe )
Chris Gleeson - composed athletic key defender ( Ivanhoe )
Nathan Hrovat - hard ball super skilled mid ( Ivanhoe )
Jacob Ballard - athletic tall utility ( Warrandyte )
Luke Baker - hard skilled defender ( Preston )

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

Only saw Macrae for the first time today, but he was very very good. Played forward pushing into the midfield, very strong overhead, kicked goals, hit targets. Footskills a definite selling point. If he can push into the midfield only a bit more (he has the tools, a bit of play in the 3rd where he had a Jet on his hammer and another one blocking his way, evaded both, took a couple of bounces and hit an inside 50 target was a thing of beauty) then he might even be a first round prospect.

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

Oh, and Cameron Conlon is an absolute freak, will probably win the TAC goalkicking this year as an underager, and should go top 3 next year.

James Stewart is apparently a lightly built midfielder and also the son of John Platten and therefore a father-son option for Hawthorn.

Not sure if they were referring to James Stewart (son of Craig from Collingwood) or James Stewart (son of John Platten). Either way I would also like to know more about the Hawthorn one.

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

If James Stewart does get drafted, would he be the first player to be on an AFL list who's last name isn't the same as his fathers since Kavanagh-Crosswell and Guthrie-Merryweather?

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

Anyone know anything about Kenny Ong? ie. height, DOB, club....

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

Got along and watched Gippy last weekend be surprised if Jack Johnstone doesnt get picked up somewhere towards the end of the draft or rookied. He has improved a lot last year and there were plenty interested in him at DC. Not sure why he didnt go but his ball winning and decision making were first class last week.

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

Is there any decent CHB FB type players going around. A big bodied player who could make the transition to AFL easier then others. Late 1st round pick (assuming hawks finish top 4)

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

I haven't seen a huge amount of him, but Tanner Smith might be worth a shot. 194cm and 88kg, so he's still got some bulk to put on but he's not a weed.

If you want someone plug and play, better look a a mature bloke from the state leagues though. Hartigan or someone.

Hey hcure.Of that list how many are key forwards?

Do you have a idea if the top 10 will most likely be all midfield types, and by the way the crow-eaters side looks awesome.I watched Mayes and Kennedy last year, those two will be guns IMO.

Really looking forward to seeing how this current crop stack up.
Cheers mate.

Based on the prospectus, the 4 players were listed as key forwards.
Murdoch
Shaw
Daniher
Cameron

You could probably add Stringer to the list after kicking 9 goals in his first game in the TAC.

From what I have heard, it is very much a midfielders draft. Best to ask people like Chris25, Knightmare and SnoopDog for better answers.

Cheers mate. Was that this year stringer booted a lazy 9 goals?

I wouldn't add Stringer personally. He is a bit like Matthew Pavlich, but he is also a midfielder first. And as good as I think he is, his game on the weekend was an anomaly. Never again will he face such a poor defence.

Every draft is a midfielders draft this early on. Most of the early talk is on those who performed the previous year as underaged players, and typically it's easier for a midfielder to do that. But a number of key forwards and key defenders have started to show themselves over the last month, so it's not looking too bad.
