Twomey annoyed me a little last week when he implied that we reached and went against the grain by picking up Stringer and Macrae. I reckon it's mostly because he was a bit bitter that he didn't get close with his predictions for our picks.

I thought we did go against the grain. Not really with Macrae, but I think we did with Stringer. If we didn't pick him, nearly all media persons had him slipping all the way down to Geelong's pick which is why I wanted us to downgrade our pick for GWS' pick 11 at the time to land Stringer. We really wanted him so obviously that wasn't a risk we were prepared to take.

In general Dalrymple seems to go against the grain a bit.

How can you write that, I thought our selections were smack on, if you are so informed as you make out, you would have known Macca wanted Ollie Wines, look where he was selected. Forget about these media boys, they are only 20 to 23 yo working on the draft, sure it's good to read their opinions, but history proves the are a long way off the mark.

That is fair enough, and I do remember the possibility of him slipping into the mid-teens, I also heard that Richmond weren't going to let him slip past their pick. So it was tough to say.

I'm really glad we picked him up though. Early last year I was telling all my vaguely interested friends that the number one guy that I wanted the dogs to get was Stringer, and that it didn't matter which pick. The other was Mayes, which could have happened but didn't eventuate. I like Macrae more now than before we drafted him, but I still wish we did my original favourite Stringer and Mayes combo.

I think our draft selections were great, don't get me wrong. Stringer, Macrae, Hrovat (haven't seen Prudden) could potentially be stars of the AFL which is exactly what you want.

I'm happy for you to search what I said last year about the draft. I mentioned on here that it was between Stringer, Macrae and Wines three weeks before the draft. But I have no clue of what other clubs were doing, I'm no where near that well informed. I do tend to agree with you that most media people don't have much idea, with the main exception being Emma Quayle. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think she might have nailed all her predicted 1st round last year or at least came very close.

She was spot on up to pick 14 (except had Macrae at 5 and Stringer at 6). North not taking Hrovat at 15 threw off the rest of her picks though. However, she did say that Garner was one who might be taken instead at 15 and was one of the few to believe that Hrovat might end up at the dogs. Still, definitely the most accurate phantom draft there.

Can someone link me to Emma's phantom article from last year? Might be a good retrospective read.

Agree she is the best draft guru out there. Better than Kevin 'he should win seven brownlows' Sheehan and Cal 'they could draft any of 290 players at this pick' Twomey.

I was just looking over it again on I think was this link: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/the-2012-afl-national-draft-20121121-29qfq.html

It's not working for me at the moment for some reason. See if it works for you.

greetings.

how many live selections are the dogs taking in this year? attempting to put together a realistic phantom list taking into account rookie upgrades but struggling a bit. Anyone who knows any other club's situations would be greatly appreciated as well.

FWIW i've got the dogs down for Aish at 4, Harvey at 42 and King at 60, thoughts?

Aish is great, I'm not sold on Harvey but I'd be ok with him, and don't know King. So my opinion isn't that great for them :p

As far as how many live selections, I'd say we'd be taking the 3 picks, 4, 42, 60 and then upgrading Goodes with our last pick.

It'll be 3 plus Goodes being upgraded.

As for your picks:
Aish - yes please
Harvey - Maybe. Think there might be better options available. I'd prefer a KPD over Harvey.
King - Hasn't been a lot spoken about him over here, but I'd be pretty happy with him at pick 60. Would be a good pick.

cheers Igloo and timtamWB, that's what I needed.

I rate Aish the 2nd best behind boyd, but the feeling is that GWS like kelly and the saints like billings, so he might be a bargain.

Harvey at 42 i reckon is decent value, the other one in the frame was Hourigan who I have going slightly later, Hourigan is quicker and can play both ends, but Harvey is taller and a better mark. each to their own really at that stage, once I got to about 60 there's still about another 50 who you could make strong cases for

If Billings is there at four I get the feeling we'll take him over Aish.

I get that feeling as well, I'd be a bit disappointed. I would rather Aish, Scharenberg and KK over him.

Can anyone recommend a game/s which best demonstrates Aish's ability or potential? I've watched his U18 Champs game vs Vic Metro and a bit of the SANFL Grand Final and obviously his highlights packages.

What's Jetta's standing at the moment?

I want him gone, has a contract for next year. Absolute last chance saloon for him, needs to get everything to click or else he'll be out on his arse.

Did they attempt to trade him do you think? I remember him and Crameri in combination cutting us up pretty badly in the 2012 season.

I wouldn't be upset Billings, but certainly not my first choice.

Providing Boyd and Kelly are gone..

Aish > Scharenberg > Kolodjashnij > Billings >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Bontempelli.

Anyone outside of those five I would be disappointed on.
