Hendo's manager on 5AA was asked by Rowey if Hendo had asked the club for a trade and whether he doesn't like adelaide (or something to that effect).

The response was something like 'nah nah hendo loves the Crows'.

To me the manager did not deny specifically that Hendo went to the club and asked for the trade, he basically just said that Hendo loved the Crows and that the Crows wanted to keep him.

Rowey in true fashion did not pick up on this dodged question and later on preceded to state his own opinion that Hendo didn't ask for a trade and the club didn't want to trade him, the manage did not respond to this.

Ahhh Rowey. Sir David Frost he ain't.

Offseason interest has never been higher

This year is higher than in 2012 and 2012 was >>>> daylight compared >>>> 2011.

The vultures will start ambushing clubs players when their is only a year left on their contract.

I wonder which players of ours contract ends in 2014. Because watch out from this point onwards.

I get the feeling FA rules will change after what has taken place of late.

I honestly don't think afl will let this trade happen.. I think shitney have shot themselves in the foot .. Looking forward to fairer rules next year... However I do hope franklin gets to the swans next year.

Agree and its just what the AFL want.
They want this to be a 12 month news cycle. Cricket is becoming a shorter and shorter season. Used to be GF then bring on cricket for the next 4 months. Now with the trade month FA, combine, then PS draft and rookie draft its in the news as it has to be with the amount of media and jurnos and managers who are both managers and media, the news has to keep being churned out. Don't me wrong I love it being a footy nerd, but it has certainly changed in the last 5 years.

Vlad wants it to be in the national eye for as long as possible. Even getting AFL stars to face Brett Lee in the nets during the last cricket season.
Get it to Feb - Nov sort of media coverage and the next FTA will be worth even more. Money to be made everywhere, but not by most of the clubs.

If the club admits they sought to trade him first, they risk a backlash from fans over the callous treatment of a player who, while not a fan favourite, isn't reviled either.

If Henderson admits he asked for a trade, he risks a backlash from fans over being yet another disloyal Victorian trying to skip the border.

Hence, neither of them are ever going to admit anything.

I have a vision one day, the game will be shorter but the season longer.

We can expect to play each time twice home and away. I think this will happen when some of the Victorian teams collapse and their is fewer teams.

It may take a while to happen 10-15 years, but I am confident it will happen.

Have to say I'm fast losing interest in AFL.

Personally I don't believe the AFL will allow the contract to pass through in its current format

the main concern for the AFL would be the amount of risk associated to the football club, for instance if Buddy was to retire with 4 years remaining the Swans would need to pay out the balance of the contract in one year which could be as much as $4m which would count against their cap for that year and effectively shut down their list

imo the contract will need to be altered to pass through the AFL

Yes, I just read an article talking about that. I think you might be right.

pretty sure if a player retires they are not entitled to be paid out their contract. They may negotiate a pay out but mostly only if they are tapped on the shoulder and asked to retire.

It would be if he gets to 32/33 and is no longer up to it but won't retire and they delist/force him to retire they would need to pay him out.

The contract no doubt has all these scenarios outlined.

Dylan Shiels from GWS has advised he wants to go back to Melbourne, that's now 2 young mids. Did they pick up many young SA kids as it looks like they will struggle to retain them. Spewing they didn't pick Wingard or perhaps they knew he might be a flight risk and that's why they didn't?

He won't be retiring with 4-5 million left.

Exactly but the post I quoted said if he retires after 4 years they will have to pay him out in full for the rest and in 1 year. I was stating that would not be the case at all.

I also think that there will be a clause stating that after say 5 years (when his is 32 and logically potential retirement age) that syd have the right to review the deal and delist him without a payout (the final years would be worth less $$ than the previous ones also). At the least there will be performance based criteria for the contract to extend beyond those years (especially games played).

They are not stupid enough to outright put that contract down without security.

If this happens it effectively halves the deal for Buddy. Why would he do it, if the likelyhood is he wont get half of it. Lets face it, there is no way he is going to be playing still in 9 years, not even 7.

Would Hawthorn still have the right to match any contract shenanigans?

I don't imagine that Buddy would agree to anything that didn't guarantee him the $, that would defeat the purpose of his moving. In addition, from Sydney's perspective, if you get the risk low enough there's the possibility that the mob in brown and gold no longer see it as not sustainable for them.

A mate of mine that is close with Hendo said that he is quite happy to stay, and he is contracted for two more years. He has only suggested to the club that if a deal which they would be happy with to get him back to Victoria, where he has sick family or something, that he would be grateful. If no deal is acceptable, he will stay.

He doesn't really want to leave, he feels compelled to be closer to family while they deal with whatever it is that they are, which is understandable. No disloyalty in it from my point of view

The problem with Free Agency as i see it is that they only have one half of the equation in place. As it stands players are essentially acting as free agents wether or not they actually qualify or not. Players like Gunston, Tippet, etc decide they want to play for X club and their previous club have to make it happen or risk losing them for nothing in the PSD. On the other hand clubs have no power to move players to another club without the player agreeing to it. If you are going to have free agency then it needs to be off set by the clubs being able to trade players as they see fit unless that player has a no trade clause in their contract. The AFL want more player movement but it seems like only at the players discretion. I think if you had more player movement it would also stop a lot of this "homesickness" cop out players use, as it would be more accepted that until you are a free agent, you could be playing anywhere.

I reckon the trade will happen - but COLA will die.

Have to say I'm fast losing interest in AFL.

Reports of the death of COLA may be exagerated. Swans chief executive Andrew Ireland stated on AFL 360 that the COLA was evenly distributed among the current playing list (I think it is a 20% loading) and the Swans can afford Tippet and Franklin because of retirements and delistings etc. Also it looks to me as though Buddy's 9 year contract is very creative and in effect a back loaded contract. His wages will not really bite until later and by then the salary cap will have probably increased anyway. COLA may be modified as I am sure it will not cost Buddy the $200,00 more per year he will be getting to live in Sydney. If Sydney can show that COLA does not allow them to afford to get Buddy then I think it will stay.

I am a bit disappointed that with a year to do something, the Crows were unable to do what Sydney were able to.

Dumb and dumber never bother to genuinely question or challenge a guest, the one time they did was Emma Quayle in defense of their BFF's Triggy and Reidy regarding the Tippett affair. That interview did not fill me with confidence at all re Hendo, his manager was very careful with what he said, not denying at any point that Hendo had requested to be traded.

You wanted them to offer buddy a $10 million 9 year contract? o_O

This is exactly what has been suggested and considering he's only 1 year into a 3 year contract it certainly doesn't sound loyalty related.

It would be a shame to lose him, I sat next to him at a Season Launch and had a great chat and he seemed like an absolute top bloke who was both humble and grounded. However sometimes things like this can be a blessing in disguise.
