Just a few garbled thoughts on salary cap issues.

Obviously the COLA, in its current form, has to go.

I have no issue with different teams being allowed different salary caps based on the unique challenges that each face. However it stinks that Sydney get relief for the cost of living, when we don't get relief for the fact that pretty much no AFL footballer wants to live here.

On the Swans/Buddy deal specifically, if he retired the Swans wouldn't have to pay him his contract, but they would have to count it towards their salary cap as it was an inducement for him to sign the contract initially.

The issue of how to deal with out of contract players who are not yet free agents is a massive challenge for the AFL. There are a few things that they could do. One is salary cap exceptions, which exist at least in the NBA. I'm not sure of exactly how they work, but I think it is along the lines of teams being allowed to pay players who they have drafted a certain amount outside of the salary cap when the time comes to extend their contracts. Sort of a loyalty bonus, I think.

Another thing is the dubious practices when it comes to drafting uncontracted non-free agents. I don't think a situation where a player can be traded against their will is desirable, but I think the power needs to shift back to the clubs a bit in these circumstances. I think the answer is rather than a player putting a price on their own head in the draft, the price on their head is whatever their last contract was, plus some sort of loading, the amount of which greater minds than mine could figure out. This would stop virtual free agency, where a player has agreed a deal with a club in advance and simply goes through the motions in the draft.

Another option would be that, when a player demands a trade to a particular club and the clubs can't agree on a trade, there be some form of binding arbitration system that the clubs have to subscribe to which puts a draft pick value on the player's head. It would then be up to the buying club to come up with a pick of equal or greater value than that to push the trade through.

The problem with Free Agency as i see it is that they only have one half of the equation in place. As it stands players are essentially acting as free agents wether or not they actually qualify or not. Players like Gunston, Tippet, etc decide they want to play for X club and their previous club have to make it happen or risk losing them for nothing in the PSD. On the other hand clubs have no power to move players to another club without the player agreeing to it. If you are going to have free agency then it needs to be off set by the clubs being able to trade players as they see fit unless that player has a no trade clause in their contract. The AFL want more player movement but it seems like only at the players discretion. I think if you had more player movement it would also stop a lot of this "homesickness" cop out players use, as it would be more accepted that until you are a free agent, you could be playing anywhere.

I don't object to free agency but I do object to players not free agents expecting and getting equivalent status without giving the clubs the same length of service. I think if a player has not reached free agency status then they should have 2 choices. Accept a trade to the club that your club does the deal with or go into the national draft again without the chance to put a price on their head.

Remember a few years ago, some papers were allegedly found outside a doctor's surgery in Melbourne - papers allegedly relating to AFL players from an "unnamed AFL club"? The aforementioned club quickly applied for and was granted an injunction preventing the name of the club & players from being named. The injunction was granted because the court determined that the papers had been illegally obtained and came under the doctor/patient privilege.

It was an open secret as to which club & players were involved, given that the names were published briefly before the injunction was granted. To suggest that anyone be asked to put up or shut up, when this is all public knowledge, is just plain ridiculous.

No we didn't we tried to dodge third party deals, not make a deal that had a club component.
We could have signed Tippett for 10 years at $9 million dollars paid him $700'000 for this first few years and then in 5 years time when he retired up his pay as our ambassador. Hence majority of contract is paid after he is finished playing.
That is what I think Sydney are doing.

We couldve done that, but we'd be el stupido.
Not many kids went to the footy to watch Tippett. Tonnes go to see Buddy.

This was well known in Melbourne at the time that certain Hawks players had strikes but because of the papers being "found" it all got quashed. There was even reports from those in the know that Kennett had said that there were going to be big name players not at the club the next year. This never eventuated due to the circumstances.

All inducements in a contract must be included under the salary is why scullys dads recruiting money was under GWSs cap.
