At this stage that's definitely true, obviously though we have the rest of the year to play out before we can properly assess all this. I reckon if Grimes stays fit he'll really show himself a valuable member of our 22, especially with Astbury out. Not as confident about Vickery but hopefully he does the same.
Even though there is half a season to go, right now the only players I wouldn't be trading, outside first year drafted players, are: Cotchin Deledio Martin Maric Rance Vlastuin & Riewoldt. As far as I'm concerned everyone else should be considered as being on the market. Naturally the offer would have to be fair value, but if the price is right sell.

I'd trade Deledio and Maric , both reached their peak and their currency abroad would mean we would be best served by trading them .

Trading Maric would make Hampson our number 1 ruck and this board would go into instant meltdown if that happened. Deledio is our second best midfielder and currently playing with an injury. While I wouldn't necessarily be against trading them it would have to be a very good deal heavily in our favour to do it.

Actually thinking of making the trip down to Geelong tomorrow morning to watch Metro v Country V.2 just so I could get a look at some of the kids in the flesh.

Would love a report if you get down there mate :thumbsu:

I see the point but you're effectively leaving Cotchin with the majority of the leadership burden and taking away our 2nd best player for a possibility.

The club needs to make hard decision on that mid tier group Grigg, Edwards, Edwards, Chaplin, Houli, Jackson, Foley (Who should have been traded in 2011), Knights (too bad about injuries) and Vickery and possibly Morris (but should be used as pure lock down). Most of those guys are easily replaceable by the kids without losing too much IMO.

Grigg = O'Hanlon/Ellis/Gordon (I haven't really seen him play yet tho) and maybe McIntosh (But he seems a bit off it yet)
A.Edwards = O'Hanlon/Lennon
S.Edwards (Although i'd keep him as pure FP to replace King) = Madonna/Lennon/Arnot/Lloyd
Chaplin = Astbury/Elton/Grimes/Darrou
Houli = Madonna/Lennon/Dea/McIntosh(as above)
Jackson = Vlastuin/Dusty/Lennon (Long Term)
Foley = Miles/Arnot
Vickery = God... Sorry McBean/Griff/Elton

All that being said i wouldn't trade Vickery or S.Edwards without an amazing offer and Jackson would have to be a good offer too.

Helbig is an interesting one, I've always liked him but he has been played out of position at AFL and has seemed to go backwards at VFL level this year. Bachelor for mine is to be delisted as he just seems disinterested these days, I blame the coaching staff for that though.

tigs2010 Jarrod Pickett for WA. 21 disposals, three goals, five clearances and seven inside-50s.

Agree with this. With 11 games to go after this week we have a good chance to keep playing these kids in positions that we'd like them to play in for the future and see what we they have got.

Its an interesting one... Watts was still expected to take a late 1st rounder, Tambling went for an end of 1st round pick 6 years after he was drafted and Polec went for mid teens pick. None apart from Tambling in 2008 showed as much as Vickery has as fwd/ruck a very important part of the game and is still only 23.
All we can do in regards to Vickery is see what clubs are offering and make a judgement there and then.

Has all the tools, just got to bring it together.

Same thing could be said about Vickery... or Jack Watts.

Not a fan i take it CM?

Has all the talent, and i've only seen him at last years champs and one other game but everything i hear is he lack intensity and the times i've seen him he looks like Vickery out on the field can look awesome but other times you wonder if can be bothered being there.

Very fair statement, yet Goddard is a different beast I believe! Class, so much class.

What about his mental capacity?

Very switched on unit.
The List Management team should be looking to land two top 20 picks this year, one in the top 7 and another in the teens, with an eye on Petracca!

Give me the best available player who satisfies these conditions:

1: Needs to be competitive.
2: Good kick
3: Decent endurance base
4: Has pace
6: Low risk of homesickness
7: Good character
8: Has it all together between the ears.
9: Someone who actually trusts their instincts.

Might be asking too much, but most that is what we really should be looking for.
A whisper from an interstate workmate is peter BAMPTON ticks all the boxes and more to come !

I understand the want to keep some extra back up on the list, but to me it's about taking a calculated risk and using what little value that we do have to trade into a better draft position.

If everyone is fit and in form Grimes IMO is 4th in line for a KPD spot, while he'd be 5th-6th in line as a medium defender behind the likes of Batchelor Houli Dea & Petterd given his lack of offensive game. However to a club like the Saints who are severely lacking in KPD stocks he would be a handy recruit. He'd be able to come in and play FB/CHB from round 1 next year and add some strength to their back line.

With regards to us being left short we do have some cover short term with the likes of Batchelor & McIntosh who could fill a 3rd tall role if needed, while Griffiths has played at CHB in the VFL and even at AFL level. So there are options there to cover and don't forget Goddard coming in as well. Like I said above, too often in the past we've had the opportunity to trade out a player with value but not a key component only to hold onto them and then get nothing for them later on when we did finally part with them.

A few posters have made comment about us being aggressive at the trade table and yet when suggestions get put forward they are against it saying we need to hang on to the players getting offered up. I'd like to see just who posters would offer up to try and get us a couple of extra picks inside the top 30. IMO there isn't that much on the list that we would want to/could afford to part to without hurting the list too much. Like I said it's a calculated gamble to trade out a couple of taller types, but IMO neither of them are first choice players heading into next year.
Yep fair enough. I still wouldn't do it though( I haven't been the 1 to say we need to get more picks in the draft by selling off good stock), as I think we still need the depth. Specifically talking about defenders, I don't really rate Griff as a defender so I think it is wishful thinking he can be used in that way. Also we don't know if Mcintosh will be a 3rd tall at AFL level let alone make it anyway. Anyway I like the idea, but Grimes for me stays.

Nice write up _RT_

Just a few things I'd add.

I think you might be overrating Grimes and Elton's value.

I've said before I wouldn't trade Grimes because we need the depth. We literally have nothing there. Especially if you want to trade Elton too. I also don't think we'd get a pick above 40-50 for him. His value is to stay at the RFC and hopefully come good.

Elton might get a pick around 30 but what a waste of that 3 years development we put into him. You've got to remember whoever we take to replace him will likely take just as long and then what do we do? Trade them out too?

Personally think Vickery and Batch are where it's at in terms of trade. Keep Vickery if we don't get a high pick or if he starts to play with some heart and effort.

Also on Foley. I don't see the point in paying him out? Firstly, it still counts against the cap. Secondly he's not terrible. Just delist Helbig or someone else instead.

As for the draft picks:
I have a few I'd take over Goddard at 5. Weller, Pickett, Blakely, Brayshaw, Petracca and even Lever. I'd probably go Weller and get a pure mid who can push out onto a wing. Ellis another possibility but I want to see more before I make that call. Petracca the smokey if he continues to thrive in the midfield.

I like the Miller pick.

No way we need to take Darcy Cameron that early IMO.

Mids, mids and more mids please. Then fan them out onto the flanks rather than the other way around.
Exactly my thinking too on the trades scenarios.

So the question is, who do we give up for that pick? Outside of our guns and good juniors, TV is probably the only 1 that 'might' get it(premium on KPP's).
