I think that you and I are just illustrating that acceptable 'character' is all in the eye of the beholder. I'll bet that Jake Stringer didn't get straight A's in Year 12 but his character was outstanding in so many other ways.
I personally think it helped that he also trained with the club though, otherwize....

and how do you know Jakey didn't get straight A's? :p
(like I said, was just using that as an example)

Ricky Nixon says AFL recruiters pick ‘robots’ on draft day.

The days of characters in AFL football are gone, according to former AFL player agent, Ricky Nixon.

Sandringham’s Angus Brayshaw is one of the many draft prospects vying for a spot on an AFL list.

He said recruiters are picking ‘robots’ to play AFL football.

“There will be kids playing who are not getting picked to play TAC Cup because they have a reputation of being a little bit silly with drinking or what not,” Nixon said. “It shouldn’t be like that.”

85 draft picks were used in the 2013 National Draft, which includes rookie elevations and picking players from other clubs.

Every year, young footballer’s hopes and dreams of an AFL career are in the hands of recruiters from the 18 clubs.

Director of The Mad Monday Show website, Justin Bertuleit, said the job of an AFL recruiter could often be a difficult one.

“I watch the TAC Cup every week and it surprises me that some players are overlooked on draft day,” he said.

“Different recruiters have different opinions of players which is what makes it so interesting.”

Nixon said projecting ahead is not an easy task for recruiters, and 9 times out of 10 they’ll take the safe option.

“If a player has a checkered background, they’ll go with the kid who is a straight A student at school,” he said.

“They’ll go with the safer option because they are in self protection mode for themselves and they want to protect the clubs interest as well.”

The days of picking a player who solely impresses on the footy field are now gone.

Nixon said the draft process has become ‘quite extensive’.

“10 years ago it was pretty simple, and that was the ability to play,” he said.

“Now it really revolves around what makes them tick.”

The recruitment process is constantly evolving, but the football talents of players remain a huge factor.

Nixon said that players have to be skilful and speedy to be noticed by recruiters.

“Athleticism and kicking are the two number one priorities now for footy clubs,” he said.

“Unless you can run quickly and for a long time, or you’ve got the power speed, then you’re just not going to get looked at.”

The past 10 years has seen AFL clubs think outside the square and recruit players who show great athleticism.

According to Nixon, clubs like Geelong will ‘pick a footballer over an athlete’.

“Other clubs have gone down the athleticism track, much to their detriment,” he said.

“Unless you’ve grown up on the game it’s a very difficult game to play and understand.”

Psychological testing is now an important part of the draft process for AFL clubs.

Nixon said he is not a big believer in psychological testing, although clubs would argue that they are.

“The trouble with psychological testing is it doesn’t take into consideration maturation rates and some people will grow up over night and some people can take ten years to grow up,” he said.

Every year, AFL clubs are shifting their focus in draft strategy to account for trends in the evolution of the game.

Clubs are now targeting a particular type of player, with the view that it may improve their club.

Nixon said Collingwood has recently targeted players with ‘big bums’, because they thought they were powerful players.

“Power players is what the game’s all about now,” he said.

“Have a look at Dane Swan, have a look at Jamie Elliot, they’re lower to the ground type players with power.”

Interesting article on http://madmondayshow.com/news-feed/page/2/ and how he mentions Geelong and how they like to take natural footballers over athletes, seems to me a mix of natural footballers and athletic types would be a good idea, especially if we're to compete with the faster and hard running teams...
Some might dismiss him as a clown, but I think there's a lot of truth to what he's saying here.

There have been a lot of players over the last few years I would've penned down as certainties to get drafted, but they didn't, and it could well be due to poor kicking or not being a dead-set professional.

Over the last few years, how many poor kicking midfielders have been drafted in the first round?

How did Panos go? What about Dayle Garlett - should we have drafted him? Tell me about the great savior who never played a senor game for us but sold speed on the side and got busted by the cops on a drug run after we ditched him.

Ricky Nixon is the very last person I would take recruiting advice from. We are focusing on natural footballers who are still improving and have good character - that's the right approach imho.

I don't necessarily agree with him, I just think what he's saying about AFL Clubs' recruiting process in that article is true.

I don't want us taking any total spanners, but I don't like the idea of snubbing players just because they haven't reached the pinnacle of maturity & professionalism.

There's a line to be drawn.

Good points you make and I agree with them GrandBlue - as I said to Dav1d earlier, each person will interpret where to draw the line at a different place and I'm not sure that the three of us would all reach the same decisions. It's a good discussion for the club and for us supporters to have. Good to hear your thoughts as always mate.

interesting way they've rated the talent early, McCartin and Goddard not listed as they hadn't played enough games
some of the over-agers put up some solid numbers to

haven't seen anything of Taylor Grace, but like what I've seen from Nathan Drummond
reminds me of Patrick Dangerfield, just less skilled right now but fast, ferocious and capable both inside and out

One of the overagers that I like had an absolute field day again. Taylor Grace had, 40 disposals, 4 marks and 10 tackles with a couple of behinds in a side that lost by nearly 100 points o_O Should really keep an eye on this guy.

Whoops put this on the other thread because I had a brain fade so now it is here where it belongs

Found any footage to watch of him? Would be good to see what type of player he is :)
Write ups only can tell so much, but found out Drummond will be returning from his injury in 2-3 weeks

From what I understand Grace is a Prolific ball winner who uses the ball really well by foot and gets big numbers, he can kick goals and I think he played as a halfback last year and has become a ball winning/goal kicking mid this year. One that would really fit in well with us btw got really good foot skills.

'Grace was draft eligible last year but he's playing some very strong footy this year and has stepped up his game which is encouraging. The criticisms are that he has lacked consistency by foot and defensive effort at times with his tackling and defensive running not quite where it needs to be.

I'd be interested to see if he plays any VFL later in the season. I feel he can hold his own and if he can show some composure at the level and up the defensive indicators and he can enter draft considerations.'

pulled up what Knightmare had to say about him, I'll be sure to check him out though ;)

Viojo-Rainbow sure does love to kick the ball, nearly every game he has a couple of handballs and 10-15 kicks :p

He was Sandy's Best and Fairest last year. Can't find any footage though I doubt that will last long with the year he is having this year so far.

Kicking in the high 70-80% by foot this year and has had some ten tackle games, seems to have picked up his game big time this year.

should be in the mix, but I wouldn't be holding my breath on getting too many of the players that have been discussed; only real one I'm sure we'll draft is Zaine :p with some luck, a couple of the players might make it to the rookie draft; like Grace and Drummond
and this time, we will have some active picks! Goodyear & Drummond both have that line breaking pace we're craving for, which is why I'm hoping at least one or both make it to the rookie draft

It is why I look at a lot of different players whose names pop up and research them by November I'll have a list as long as my arm... or longer :p

I have a want list of about 35 players right now, mostly based on positions we need filled :D and hey, if we can get 2-3 of them; I'd be real happy :drunk:
oh and that list isn't even anything to do with our first pick, mostly our second rounder onwards ..every time I see a feature article on one of these players I curse at how he is probably going in the first round now ha ha

No to this happening to Kerbatieh he had one in the Herald Sun when he kicked five goals the other week :p. We need a guy who can kick it 60 meters off only a few steps :p

1st round: Liam Duggan
2nd round: Zane Cordy (f/s)
3rd 4th 5th: Tall forwards who can mark and kick goals.
