I don't think it's anything really a draft pick is going to give us in his first year
You're definitely right, but if we can get a draft pick that has as much of an impact as KK and Martin, it'll be great for the team.

Gold Coast should get pick 7 or 8 in the draft after recent results. That should be good enough to secure Lachie Weller unless Brisbane want to swoop in and claim another local with pick 4/5. I think there's little doubt the Suns will take Weller if he's still available.

There is no doubting that it would. A lot. KK has been a revelation so happy to have him. Jack not so much impact but the potential and flashes have been amazing!

But the issue is how many picks inside the top 10 come in and have that impact straight away. Although most of them show up and become great players not many of them come out and change a team from day one. It's not to say others in the top 10 have not come on since and showing their class. Just as far as immediate impact goes there is rarely much. Have a look who in my opinion are the players since Gold Coasts inception who I think have been that immediate positive impact.

2010 - Only Dyson Heppell at pick 8 had an immediate positive impact

2011 - Chad Wingard at pick 6 was the only one in top 10

2012 - Ollie Wines at Pick 7

2013 - Bontempelli #4 ..... Kollar #5 ....... Aish #7

The exciting thing is that there have been a few around the area we will get a pick this year :D

Could be coincidental, but if for whatever reason there is something behind that pick 7 kind of area, we could be in for some luck :)

As much as I like Weller, pick 7 is a big big reach when you consider who else is available around there.

Interesting to see how it plays out and whether we roll the dice on him being there at our second pick in the mid teens.

Lets play ball.. Roll the dice..

I would trade at least 1 or both of those first round picks we have. We are lacking in our list the spread of age and experience that Clayton/Mckenna have carried on about.

We cant keep sitting at the bottom/middle of the ladder and keep praying for draft picks to come good. It can be a lottery at times.

Malceski, Goldsack should be free agency targets certainly. But we need to trade for a bigger fish in my opinion and throw in 1 of our 4 ruckmen (not sustainable long term to keep on our list). Throw in a 1st rounder and see what comes up.

Garlett and Robinson are apparently on the table if any club can come up with a good deal.

Maybe the GCS might be able to offer up "picks" and players.

Anyone wish to comment?

I'm borderline on whether to trade our first round pick or not, but I'm really starting to think that we have enough younger players already. What we're desperately needing is a few solid older players who can fill in our gaps in expertise and play. If the only way that happens is to trade our picks, then I'm all for it.

I actually like both of them, but would not offer either of our first rounders.

Garlett isn't a required type I would think. Robinson is borderline AFL quality in my opinion. Tough as nails, but a very ordinary football player

Can we throw both 1st rounders at Jordan Lewis, Rory Sloane, Josh Kennedy (Sydney)?

Whatever it takes, we need a premier tough on baller around mid 20s and pay overs for him.

Probably wrong thread, but I hope we trade at least 1 of our 1st round picks.

That'd be a pretty big risk to pass on him with the first pick. Lachie has been in the Suns' system for years now and lives on the coast so it may not take him as long to develop into a senior player as it would for other interstate players. He's the top talent coming out of Queensland this year and we know how important it is to the club to recruit Queenslanders. I'm sure the club would want to avoid another Zorko-esque situation as well.

He's probably the best junior talent to come out of Queensland since Nick Riewoldt. I know Beams and Tippett went on to become great players but neither had a big reputations going into the draft. The local aspect is the best part of the story though. The only other GC local the club has drafted in the past (outside of the inaugural year) was Andrew Boston and we all know he's a gem. Before anyone steps in and says he's Tasmanian, if state of origin came back you would see Lachie play for Queensland and Mav play for Tassie.

IMO the ideal outcome is to recruit Frawley via free agency and draft Weller with the top pick. That brings in two very talented players and the club has the chance to recruit another quality player with the compo pick in the late teens/early 20s. That spread the age both ways and definitely strengthens the club in almost every area.

Agreed. Any room for Malceski though?

Garlett is a small forward isn't he? Someone with actual electric pace, would like him roaming the forward line. Ahmed Saad also comes back into the equation next year, would like to ask some questions about where he sees his future.

I seem to recall that we have spoken to Saad. One of six clubs to have.

This years draft will be all about us sustaining a dynasty. Only exception of course is trading a pick for an experienced player

And kicking skills, its amazing how much fitter you look when you control the ball instead of chasing it

Weller has been predicted to go anywhere from 5- 15 in the draft, I wonder if the club would be prepared to roll the dice and hope is is there at our second pick (somewhere around the 15 mark)

I think it might be a bit later than that. Geelong are currently third on the ladder so that would give the Suns pick 17 but I can see the AFL giving Melbourne a compo pick/priority pick so the Suns' second pick will probably be 18. The club will have learnt from the Zorko situation and might be more inclined to take Lachie with their top pick.

I hope they don't Matchu If Melbourne get a PP it is a disgrace, they tanked for their last one and were caught out and how would that be fair to St Kilda who have battled fairly over a tough season.

I actually don't think Geelong are that good, I see them finishing fourth behind Sydney (premiers) Hawthorn and Freo, I also think Port are starting to come good again. Perhaps its just wishful thinking but thats the way I see it.

Zorko situation is completely different , Zorko was ours and we traded him , all Weller is a highly rated GC youngster we cant access , cant see us using pick 7 , maybe the compo pick yes.

Who would have to be available at pick 7 for you to take the gamble?
