Mutterings around that we're interested in Norwood Ruckman, Sam Baulderstone. Same age as Gawn, man mountain, has come on in leaps and bounds over the past couple of years, equal third in Magarey medal.

To my mind the phrase "best available" becomes more generic the lower you go in the talent pool. The margins simply diminish. The club won't rookie a needs type player if they think there's a negligible hope of it coming off.

Yeah, seen his name mentioned a bit - didn't know he was linked to us though. Same age as Gawn is ideal.

Keitel is just about best available. Was tougher as a second round ND prospect at one stage. He is well worth a look. Blauderstone is an interesting prospect though.

Peter Bampton is best available!

If saints don't take him, we should. Big bodied mid - lower risk & more likely to make it.
Yep I like Bampton

He was the bloke who played a year or two ago at about 150kg's, right?

If we are going to put another ruckman onto the list (which I think we should), then I'd probably rather trade for one next year, than take another rookie.

I agree, we have gawn spencer and king as developing ruckman
Better off trading for a warnock or someone in that 25-30 bracket who can come in an share games with Gawn

Although this rookie ruck is apparently 23(?) and a big unit so he might be a decent stop gap

No idea if any good draftees are still on the table, but I wouldn't mind us re-rookieing Tapscott if he's still around with out last pick, having a look at that Panos bloke in the SANFL or picking up a ruck. If Gawn's dodgy knees come apart again, we're left with Jamar and Spencer, who don't mind an injury themselves and Spencer loves a suspension too. May as well give this Baulderstone unit a try.

There's a guy on the main boards saying Tapscott is injured and won't get picked. Anyone know if this is true? I thought he'd been training with us, and doing ok.

Hurt his back or neck in his 3rd or 4th session but I'm not sure how long he's expected to be out of action. I think it's around 6+ weeks - so not good signs for him.

I reckon we'll pass.

As much as I've loved Tapscott and wanted the best for him at the Dees, with his history of injuries I think it's best for us to pass

Here's a list of potentials who missed out, taken from the MFC website.

Bampton is probably the one who was expected to be drafted the highest, and maybe Keitel as well. Given we went with 3 pretty strong mids in the draft, I'm not sure if we'd want Bampton unless we rate him clearly higher than the others.

Will Fordham is possibly the one I would like to go with. Oleg Markov is also interesting with his talent and speed, but pretty skinny with 2 broken collarbones this year is the risk.

Peter Bampton (182cm, 83kg, midfielder): A ball-winner who has really solid frame, which means he could step into a club and play a role. Bampton averaged 19 touches in seven senior SANFL games for Norwood this year, having missed the under-18 championships with an ankle injury.

Daniel Capiron (189cm, 81kg, defender): Was overlooked after an inconsistent season where he struggled to find any continuity. But he has shown signs across two seasons of his ability to read the ball in the air, be a good intercept marker across half-back and offer rebound.

Will Fordham (188cm, 78kg, midfielder): Came on towards the end of the season, and a handful of clubs had interest in him late. Fordham played 20 games for the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup and averaged 20 disposals. He carries strong athleticism, a bit of speed and is a nice size for clubs looking for midfield height.

Matt Hammelmann (197cm, 88kg, forward): He can join the Brisbane Lions under the pre-selection rookie rule as a member of their academy. Other clubs might take a look if they don't, as Hammelmann has shown signs he can be used at either end of the ground with success. Mainly it's as a forward, though, where he presents on the lead and kicks well.

Nick Jackson (195cm, 86kg, defender): Jackson is a tall defender who can shut down players, and tends to read the play well in the air. He played just one game at the mid-year carnival for Queensland through injury, but could be an option for a club looking for another young developing tall back.

Tyler Keitel (194cm, 86kg, forward/defender): Spent the season pushing back and forward, and showing he could play a role at either end. His athleticism is what might hold him back, but given his versatility a club might see something to work with.

Oleg Markov (186cm, 69kg, forward): Having broken his collarbone twice this year, Markov's limited exposure would have contributed to him not being drafted. A club might be better placed to take him on as a rookie, given his speed and athletic ability in the forward line and midfield.

Rowan Marshall (198cm, 87kg, ruckman): Marshall has played as a ruckman, but at his height clubs see him more as a tall forward at the next level who can also shift into defence. He was overlooked at last year's draft and returned to play some strong footy for Vic Country and the North Ballarat Rebels.

Braydon Preuss (205cm, 102kg, ruckman): The rookie draft is where recruiters will take more of a look at ruckmen, with Preuss on the radar of several clubs. The towering Quuenslander doesn't collect heaps of the ball but can present and offer a contest in the air, and has got some skill when competing at ball-ups.

Francis Watson (186cm, 76kg, defender): An agile, mobile defender who loves to run with the ball tucked under his arm. He has a great natural leap and is an instinctive player who improved immensely this season and has plenty of upside. Watson played four games for Western Australia at the national championships as an over-aged player.

Nothing too new here guys, but just thought I'd pass this on from a contact of mine who works at the club (not in recruiting).

He said that a week prior to the draft, Todd Viney and Jason Taylor gave all the football department and some non-football staff a short, confidential presentation on the clubs strategy for draft day.

The message was pure and simple; best available.

They said they were only taking a list of 53 players, ranked in order, and would cross names off as they were read out - and would simply read out the highest names left on the list when our picks came up. They said that his strategy isn't used as much as people might think, and if a club took 4 KPP's, it would be unlikely that they'd take another with a pick in the 60's type thing. But we were prepared to do this if that's how it panned out.

They obviously didn't give anything away in terms of specifics within the list, but they didn't spend long on worrying about which order they had the top 3 in. They would just take the residual of McCartin, Petracca and Brayshaw - and that was settled a fair way out from the draft.

Afterwards, the recruiting group have implied that they didn't expect either of ANB or Oscar to be available at 40, so needless to say they were pretty happy, and feel they got 2 pretty big sliders. They were also very happy that even though the strategy was strictly 'best available', the types of players they ended up with (including Stretch) was well balanced and also addressed needs.

The only comment I got on specifics, was probably just that the club is pretty excited about Petracca. If he reaches his potential, they expect a special player here.

Yeah, I was keen to give him another crack. But if he's gone and picked up another bloody medium to long term injury, it's surely curtains.

We've got pick 2 which will surely be the best kid/player left available, and that's obviously not going to be Tapscott.

The second pick would either be best available or a needs based project type.

I did think we might give Jetta a chance last year, but I don't think we will with Tapscott this year.

Champion data did a top 30 for players in the draft across the country based on stats, Christian Petracca was ranked number 1 :D and at number 27 was Tyler Keitel who obviously wasn't drafted, wonder if he is worth a spot as a project forward?
