Rate all of these except the fullbacks. But have not seen enough of those two to completely right them off. Perhaps they played well when I wasn't at their games.

Hartley, Paine and Keitel - KPD, KPF and Swingman.
I think these guys are forwards rather than defenders. Are all rookie draft targets not main draft targets. If attitude is right once drafted could turn up a serviceable player in 2-4 years.

Interesting - there was a debate on this board years ago when we were aligned with Werribee that Pods being such a dominant VFL forward was hurting our development of KPFs (although the quality we selected is an issue too).
Clearly having a more closely aligned gameplan between VFL & AFL has to help our list.

Well Redpath was playing seconds at times for a start.....I think Jones may have at one point to.

You can't F/S a rookie, only in the main draft.

No i think you can nominate him, and if he's not drafted then you can take him as a rookie. Same with the academy kids, Brisbane I believe are taking Hammelmann in the rookie draft. Read it somewhere, think that's about right.

Had we wanted to rookie Foster we could have nominated for him, but didn't. Carlton took him anyway do we couldn't have picked him up, clearly we didn't want him.

I can't find enough info on this anywhere. At least one player is already nominated by a club for the rookie draft. Did that not happen via F/S bids? Is it to do with academy selections?

What was the deal with Long at Essendon? He's a father son for the rookie draft isn't he?

You can nominate a rookie F/S, so if no-one drafts him in the main draft we automatically get him as a rookie. We chose not to which shows you how much we rate Foster.

I also think Michael Hartley is worth a close look, huge guy with good agility and strong mark. Also we could consider other talls in Jake Owen (Williamstown) as a tall utility or Elliott Le Grice (Sandringham) - previously mentioned.
There are often hidden gems in the VFL and we could do worse than have a look. All 3 are young with potential for improvement. Hartley and Owen have AFL Highlights.

Thought Long was something to do with their draft sanctions - they weren't allowed to nominate him but if nobody took him in the main draft they had first rights to him as a rookie

"Jake Long appearing here in Essendon Colours. He will join the Bombers as a father/son rookie selection.

Long played only school football this year, as his parents didn't want him to take on TAC Cup Football, preferring he focus on his year 12 studies."

Was he highly rated at all before this year? If so I'm sure it was his parents choice and not the clubs... absolutely stinks of Essendon being Essendon

Is he something we require? I'm sorry we should be rookieing kids who are a realistic chance to make it. Keeping a run with lockdown defender is ridiculous when possibly we can get kpps. I don't get the strategy to be honest.

Who else do we have (back line specific) for this role? Picken? All other defensive orientated smalls are mids.

Western Bulldogs

Rookie draft selections: 5, 23, 40, 57.

What they need: The Bulldogs went small in the draft with the average height of their five selections just 179cm. The acquisitions of key defender Zaine Cordy as a father-son recruit and former Cat Joel Hamling have helped the Dogs to bolster their depth in defence. What they need now is to improve their ruck stocks. Ruckman Will Minson will be 30 next year, and aside from youngster Tom Campbell, the Dogs don't really have another player that can take on that role. The club has already committed to rookie-listing delisted defender Daniel Pearce, and is also considering re-drafting Alex Greenwood or Brett Goodes via the rookie list, with the delisted duo training with the club over the pre-season. - Nat Edwards
