List Mgmt. 2014: The List

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

The playing list already looks a lot more balanced (on paper at least) than it did only a few weeks ago.
We can't change the past but it's a pity we didn't hit things a little harder a couple in 2011 & 12

Just some thoughts on how we currently sit and what we may do next year to further improve the list.

Rucks: Kreuzer Warnock Wood.
Hampson out and Wood in. We've done very well here to free up money and gain a long kicking defender for the draft pick we attained.
2014: A young developing ruck-man may be on the cards for next year.

Tall Backs: Jamison Watson Giles
Giles was a good but also an important pick-up. McCarthy didn't look likely after looking O.K. first year.
2014: What would it take to get Frawley? Would solve a lot of potential problems.

Tall Forwards: Waite Henderson Casboult Rowe
Nothing gained this year but it's clear we'll be needing something sooner than later.
2014: Hope we're stoking the fires hard. A big fish maybe?

Medium Backs: Walker Tuohy McInnes Bootsma White Duigan
2014: We're in pretty good shape here.

Medium Forwards: Menzel Everitt Reynolds Holman Johnson Sheehan Byrne
Lots of un-trieds but it seems we've covered ourselves nicely here
2014: Can't see us setting out to attain another forward and certainly not at the expense of a KPF

Small Backs: Simpson Docherty Temay Scotland
2014: Scotland likely to retire but we seem to be in good shape here regardless

Small Forwards: Garlett Yarran Buckley
2014: Unless something amazing falls our way we won't be shopping around for a pure small forward. Not the way we're going.

Inside Mids: Judd Murphy McLean Cripps Robinson Graham Bell Ellard
2014: I think development is key. Graham & Cripps may need to be fast-tracked.

Outside Mids: Thomas Gibbs Lucas
2014: Lucas is key here, as if Mick can get him playing the way he wants, we may not need to shop for anything.

Stoppers: Carrazzo Curnow Cachia Armfield
2014: Pretty well covered here now with others also capable of performing duties if called up.

I know that players can be thrown about and some are still to establish favoured positions but overall the spread looks reasonable now.
You'd love some of the ages to be pegged back a year or two and some to be moved forward a year or two but nevertheless, it's getting there.

Wishlist for 2014:
1 Established key back.
1 Established key forward.
1 Young ruck-man
Any mids that will give us quality depth.

Have a feeling that 2014 is going to be quite tall for us...............just not 2010 tall.

I'm tempted to fire up a List thread for 2015, but some may see it as just a little bit premature.:)

We're likely to have another 8 or so changes next year.
We'd also be in a much better position than even last year to have some real irons in the fire.

Way too premature Harks.

Yeh, the list obviously needs quality KPP. I would be very very surprised if we don't get one in trade week. Hopefully we also don't fall into the trap of getting all KPP in this draft... Might even want to trade out our B-C graders for possible 2nd-3rd round picks if they have no place in the future lineup.

KPP and more run like Mick said last year. Need players like Thomas who can gutrun both ways and improve our transition between the backline and forwardline. Best sides don't always dominate the clearances, but they do force turnovers and get the ball back. Hawks played Mitchell at half back with Suckling injured. Unless a mid falls into our lap, we arguably have enough inside mids and grunts in Cripps, Robinson, Graham, Bell, Holmann, etc.

Just one point, if Daisy gets back to his best I would not label him as an outside mid, his hardness at the ball is underrated and in my point of view he is at his best when he wins his own ball at the stoppages and bursts out of the packs and delivers the ball. He did that in 2010-11 and that is the reason Lyon ratted him as the best player in the game.

MM turned him into some sort of weapon. Any wonder he considers him so highly. It's like Michelangelo looking up at the Sistine ceiling and nodding "Yep".
Needs to push Yarran into the midfield with Armfield and Guthrie tagging Dangerfield in the last two seasons. Defensive side has improved after he played on Dangerfield and Wingard in the NAB Cup and round one. Will cut sides up if he gets it a dozen times.

Holman definitely an all round midfielder, don't imagine he'd play much on a HFF.

Harks started this thread a while back so here's how I see it now:

Genuine Tall Backs:
Michael Jamison, Matthew Watson, Cameron Giles, Sam Rowe*, Lachlan Henderson*

3rd Tall Backs:
Andrew McInnes, Andrejs Everitt, Simon White, Joshua Bootsma

Medium to Small Backs:
Andrew Walker, Kade Simpson, Dylan Buckley, Chris Yarran, Sam Docherty, Zach Tuohy

Inside Midfielders/Contest to Contest link players:
Mitch Robinson, Brock McLean, Patrick Cripps, Tom Bell, Nick Graham, Ed Curnow, Andrew Carrazzo, Jaryd Cachia

All Round Midfielders:
Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs, Chris Judd, Nick Holman, Dale Thomas

Outside Midfielders:
Kane Lucas, Heath Scotland, Tom Temay

Medium to Small Forwards:
Troy Menzel, Jeffrey Garlett, David Ellard, Dennis Armfield, Luke Reynold, Blaine Johnson, Ciaran Sheehan, Casey Byrne

Tall Forwards:
Jarrad Waite, Levi Casboult, Lachlan Henderson*, Sam Rowe*

Rucks:
Matthew Kreuzer, Rob Warnock, Cameron Wood

Tim Membrey finishes his 2 year apprenticeship at Sydney this year.

Return to Victoria to play with his Gippsland teammate, Nick Graham? Won't play much footy this year with Gary Rohan returning from injury.

Now we're talking !!

Membrey was one draftee I was hoping we would snaffle but the Swans beat us to him at #46 and then we took Nick Graham @ 54.

Maybe overlooking Temay @ #35 for Membrey was the right way to go, hope it doesn't come back to bite us on the butt.

Rowe is not going to make it as a key position defender, he probably isn't going to make it at all. Watson is under the pump as well and the jury is out as to whether he will make the grade. Giles still has his learner plates on (we dearly hope he makes it) and thank god for Henderson, he's a Rock of Gibraltar back there for us.

Everitt is a swingman, White & Bootsma are going to struggle to still be at the club next year and McInnes unfortunately, has not returned the same player from his knee injury.

Walker has to be played as a permanent forward, it's where he played his best & most consistent footy for the club. Simpson needs to be used in the guts, our midfield lacks quality ball users.

Not a lot of good users of the ball on that Inside Mids list, we need some polish in that lot. As "tradesmen" a few of them are good but when it comes to making the right decision, there are a couple there who tend to take the wrong one more often than not.

Holman is a newbie and cannot be considered part of the big picture right now, the other four have a large workload to carry and I'm not sure they can do it week after week now.

When you say Outside Mids, you should be classing Lucas as an Outside of The Club Mid, he is too timid !! Temay hasn't fired a shot yet and Scotland is on the verge of retiring (gonna miss his pinpoint footwork too).

Only Menzel & Garlett are close to being up to it as a small forward, the rest are second stringers, rookies, and newbies.

Fact : we have no genuine tall forwards of note. Pinch-hitters yes, able to take the game by the scruff of the neck no. We need to leave Henderson at CHB, he gives us some structure & foundation to build from.

Our rucks are hit & miss, Kreuzer still hasn't reached his zenith yet and many are starting to wonder if he actually will, Warnock is a cumbersome praying mantis who does nothing around the ground & Wood is a 'here's hoping' gesture. We are in trouble in this area.

Why? For desk top recruiters he was slow undersized KPF. Was a man playing against boys. There was a reason he was a slider. On out put he was a late first rounder, on potential a 3rd rounder.

Good KPD and KPF should be priority 1 on the shopping list this year.

Wouldn't be wanting him as a KPF, definitely too short for that position. He is a solid competitor and you are right, he was a man playing against boys due to his size. The last person I can think of like that was Shannon Hurn.

Bootsma has a high ceiling. Has the tools and the athleticism and is worth persisting with.

Walker has to be played as a permanent forward, it's where he played his best & most consistent footy for the club. Simpson needs to be used in the guts, our midfield lacks quality ball users.

Did you fall asleep last year? He has had a great year in the forwardline - yes. However last year's performance in the backline was equal if not better than his 60? goal year. He's just a gun wherever you play him!
