St Kilda the only sure thing but not really as we have lost to both Brisbane and Melbourne already so the Saints will fancy their chances...they always do against us.

You've been a bit optimistic about our chances against the Suns BM but it is winnable I guess.

I hate the thought of only one more win this season but I will take some solace in top 5 draft pick.

List management is a balance. You may argue we've neglected the spine but the answer is not to go in the complete opposite direction and not look to bolstering our stocks elsewhere on the park.

I totally agree with you that it is a balancing act and our club has not done it that well over the past 6-8 seasons.

An example of that was the year we went tall crazy and snaffled Watson, Mitchell & McCarthy in attempt to address the list deficiencies. Problem there was Mitchell & McCarthy didn't make it and there is strong evidence to suggest Watson isn't going to either making that draft a complete wipe-out.

Clearly we do not have the necessary key position players at the club and need to draft some in, bearing in mind that they do take longer in the development phase. If we accept that Jamison is going to retire at the end this new contract, then we should be grooming his replacement now, not the year leading into his exit interview.

I cannot see us being successful until we address the spine as it has been our Achilles heel for way too long.

This does not mean we draft & trade only for key position players either, we need to be constantly reviewing our list and looking for where the next hotspot is going to occur. Judd, Carrazzo & Simpson are about to retire so we certainly need to be picking up one solid midfielder every year at the draft regardless of the other player types acquired as the midfield is where the game is at in this modern era.

Get as close to an ideal spread of player types on the list and then have some sort of succession planning after that.

A consistent no-frills half-forward who keeps getting the job done for Gold Coast.

That is from his bio on the GCFC website, reads a lot like our chap Menzel to me and I'd prefer to put my faith in him delivering.

Why are we not a chance against the pies? They just lost to the dogs which means they are not unbeatable plus we ran Geelong to the wire and were very competitive against last years premier.

We are a chance in most of the games I listed above to be fair but the odds are heavily against us.

I'd love to end Collingwood's top four chances though......

GWS have a senior list of 50 players this year. Next year that has to reduce to 48 and 2 every subsequent year until they match the rest of the clubs.
Correct me if I am incorrect but they also have to have a minimum of 3 picks in the ND.
This would mean that they have to delist / trade 5 players at end of season.

So whilst they logically will want market value for their players in trades, would they really be interested in taking players?
I would think that pick upgrades would be their number one preference.

Ready to go defenders would also be on their agenda as that appears to be their achilles heal at the moment.
If we are quick then we could do a pick upgrade + player deal to net the players we want.

Thing is, we want about 5-6 of the GWS lads (eg, Shiel, Boyd) and there is no way known we can snaffle all of them.

16 other clubs. We'll be lucky to snaffle any of them.

Although the gws boys are high picks, I believe that price no longer applies.

Re O'Rourke. I can't see the likes of St Kilda, Melbourne and Richmond giving up their first pick for him. The dogs maybe the team that wants him. His best mate Talia plays there and that's were he initially hoped he would go.

O'Rourke will surely leave but who gets him? We clearly won't give up our first pick unless it's for him and another gws player to move here. A key forward please but that would be a bit much unless SOS is feeling extra generous.

I'd let our first pick go to Sydney for Mitchell and Membrey. Gun mid and developing forward sounds good!

It's hard to see from our current crop who were would let go that we could bring in some more second round picks.
There's players available but we will need to take chances and be ruthless
