I also find cricket less appealing than it used to be. The ch9 commentary is a disgrace and our pitches are roads. Overseas games are better to watch, as evidenced by the world cup games played in NZ being more exciting than the ones played here.

American crow, have you noticedany increased awareness or appreciation for ALL in the States in recent years?

I think it helps that games are regularly on tv--although I suspect that helps on the west coast more due to time difference.

It remains a niche sport in the States. Certainly, as the group in Austin, Tx has shown there are Americans starting to play more regularly.

I actually wonder if perhaps Footy could someday be an alternative to American football here. With the concussion issues being seriously debated here I know I would rather see my son play footy than football.

Not saying you can't get concussions--just doesn't seem quite as frequent to me.

Has elements Americans enjoy--scoring, still a physical game, excitement/drama.

Maybe further down the road. To me the biggest hurdle Footy has is the dang time difference. The target audience you actually want to tap into is the midwest/east--the west is just not as fanatical about sports.

And yet if we were having Oprah on our website we would get laughed at due to her demographic being older than the "hipsters" at Port.

Much like the trolling done by that lot on "Lemmings board" of photos with our players at the Mallala bowls club, showing support to people affected by the Pinery fire.

I reckon if the NFL got rid of the padding and swapped the helmets for this type

There would be less concussions as players would be a bit more protective of themselves.

It has been discussed.

And if that club did such a thing, it would be the greatest act of humanity and compassion to a community in dire straights ever seen.

They are probably hoping she'll give a whole heap of stuff away. Kochie will be lining up with all the soccermums who watch her show.

You get a tarp,
And you get a tarp

And we picked the first AFL draftee to go through "their" Indigenous Academy.

further, I don't think people yet suspect the implications of what their real agenda is: to get their hands on the best aboriginal footy talent by having it classified as an "academy" like those in the eastern states. It would enable them to "direct" such talent through to their academy. For example, had it been in operation this year, Milera would now be a port power player.

Meanwhile, a more altruistic program receives very little publicity:

Personally don't think the WA, Vic or SA clubs will have an academy set up like the Northern States. The reason they have them is because their state league clubs are not at a standard that can sustain potential AFL talent. Also Aussie Rules is not the dominant code there so they use these resources to scout and entice young talent. Isaac Heeney is a great example of a guy who would never have played Aussie Rules if not for the Swans Academy. The AFL funds these academies anyway.

If we wanted such a system we would have to fund it. I would rather our resources spent on developing our AFL squad. Our state has the SANFL to develop young talent.

I saw an idea that I liked, that the AFL raises the draft age by another 12 months to allow the players to have a year in the reserves comps, working part time jobs or going to uni before they become footballers, give them some life experience to appreciate how good they have it.

BUT

All the clubs without academies have "scholarship" drafts, one for each state, where they can pick 2 local kids from the next draft pack to give scholarships to, a father-son kid can automatically become a scholarship and if a club has a father-son as a scholarship they are able to have 3 scholarship players. So for the SA kids we would be in a draft with Port, lowest finish team picks first.

A kid on a scholarship is employed by the club part-time, they don't attend all training sessions and don't have as much contact time with the club as a player would, the club prepares them for life as a footballer and the kids are able to play for that club's reserves team. It's like a tafe course for being an AFL footballer.

Come draft time, a team who has taken a kid as a scholarship gets an academy like discount to draft that player if they want to.

So the academies have the advantage of having an almost unlimited amount of players they can train and get a discount on, all other clubs pick 2 a year before the draft (but at the age we draft players at now).

Port runs an Aboriginal academy and they went to China. I wonder who is paying for that?
A joint funding exercise between the South Australian Government and the Department of Education.
Port power fund very little of it.

Partially correct.
The Tour was funded by UniSA, EnergyAustralia (HQ in Hong Kong), SAASTA, Reach Education Org., PAFC China Advisory Group HK, PAFC China Advisory Group Guangzhou, and DFAT in HK, GZ and Beijing... having been inspired some time ago by Christopher Schacht.

Port have always been an underhanded slimy operation. No matter the spin, there has always only been one motive, and you nailed it.

How about an annual charity One Day Cricket Match at Adelaide Oval over the summer break between the Crows and Power players with the proceeds to each teams favoured charities. I reckon they would get a massive turn up from the footy loving crowd and I reckon the players would love it too. Could mean a pretty penny for charity and a great public perception for the two clubs.

I know we have some bloody good cricketers on our list and I'm sure the Power will have too, seem to recall Hamish Hartlett went alright?

I remember the one the clubs put on 5+ years ago, to raise money after a bushfire perhaps? I think a summer 20/20 against a set number of current players and legends (so it doesn't become too much of an uncompetitive joke like most charity games have become) just as we are looking for more footy would be a bigger money raiser than the tired Slowdown concept.

I hope our club is getting behind this, somehow I expect there will be one team from SA and that will be port.
