Given up less for the Dons talent? Port with Ryder?

Ryder for picks 17 & 37?

Essendon win that trade by a mile.

Kurt Tippett is a better forward/ruck than Ryder, & Tippett is the most overrated & overpayed player in the AFL

Ryder is good, but not picks 17 & 37 good that's for sure
Totally agree. It was Port that got ripped off in the Ryder trade. And on that note, Brisbane got ripped off in the Beams trade, even though he had a good year.

The similarity I see in these two deals was that early in the negotiations Port and Brissy came out and said our first pick is on the table.

I think Port have made huge mistake again this year by already saying pick 10 is on the table for Dixon. We that 10 is gone for Dixon but you don't start a negotiation by giving up ground. I'm interested to see if Port get ripped again.

Bains is playing this right. We can't let the big clubs bully us around and you stop this by negotiating strategically.

There's a lot talk here that Mathieson is the man we should be drafting and making sure we keep a pick that will secure his services.

Hopefully I'm not the only one that is completely unsold that he is the man for us.

There are a few reasons for this but basically I don't think he his very dynamic nor does he give us anything we don't already have. I agree we need a midfielder but the club has said we've got enough inside mids and we need address a lack of outside run. Parish would be perfect and while Francis may not address this need, he does offer versatility and something both dynamic and different not to mention talent. Although unlikely to be available, even at pick 5, I would take either of those two if available. Otherwise I think it's time, this year, to start addressing needs, take a risk. Not go the safe option in Mathieson, who I see as a solid inside mid which we have in Dunstan, Newnes, Armo, Ross, Weller. Earlier I've advocated for Wayne Milera. I also think Darcy Tucker would give us what we need while like Francis, Curnow offers versatility, something dynamic and something different. I think it is these three we should talking about regarding our top 10 draft selection.

Hibberd and Bonner are guys I'm looking at if we end with later 1st round or early 2nd round selections.

Thoughts?
Im with you on that one. We need quick classy players like issac smith and brad hill types. I would like to keep 5 if we could get a parish or a francis but if we know for a fact that they will be gone that i would down grade that pic for a 10 or so and another in 15 range. There are 7 or so players who are very skilled and quick around that area. As you say i believe we have enough grunt just need to get game time into ross and dunstan.

That was daylight robbery!!

I rate ryder higher than carisle based on performances to date. He was also under contract so based on all of that pick 24 is perfectly fine with a future 3rd as a sweetner
Daylight robbery by whom?

IMHO Port paid overs & rightly so cos he was contracted.

As I've said in an earlier post, if Essendon use their picks & draft Langford & Lonie, instead of trading 37 for a cooked Cooney, they win by a mile

So pleased people agree with me. Could you list your 7 names so I can have a look and know we're on the same wavelength?

Essendon won by a mile on that trade, could have been even more if they used their picks properly

No chance. Where else can u get a 200cm ready made key back. We have not had a monster key back for years. Worth every cent
Agree 100%. As good as Fisher has been for us as an intercept mark and rebound defender, we've always been monstered by the likes of Cloke, Pavlich and Jon Brown. Ask yourselves who was the last genuine CHB the Saints have had ? I hope you have a good memory !

Hird said two years ago that when it came to marking the ball JC was the best he'd seen at Essendon either as a player or coach. You don't lose that ability. He's just been lost in the Injector Wilderness for the past couple of seasons.

At 24 we just do what's needed to get him. I don't want to give up pick 5 either but given our guys recent record at getting Bruce, Lonie and Sinclair from deep in the various drafts I'm confident they'll do the right thing.

Does anyone else just feel like they've just gotten to the final scene of the Sixth Sense. As though all the signs were there but you were too engrossed in other things to figure it out?

Hints have been dropped since Carlisle nominated us but I have been glossing over the actual deals and how it could be worked out. The other deals we are reliant on (with the expansion club) and the trading of pick 5 to (probably) get the kid we want in the draft anyway (and Carlisle) now seems so obvious...

I do love my unsubstantiated conspiracy theories, and I will preface this by saying big deals with lots of clubs never get done as one big deal, but this hasn't been lost on me;

Freeman, Weller, McCarthy, Treloar, pick 7, pick 8 and pick 16 all belong to just three clubs.

I wont work out a trade scenario, but we would win the trade period by ending up with Freeman, Weller (assuming Freo put him up to get their big fish), 8 (for Mathieson) and 16 (for Carlisle) for a combination of our picks over this year and next. :rainbow:

I must have been thinking of someone else.. I remember seeing a video of one of the kids in this years draft and thinking he was lightning quick.
He's not a quick runner, like Jetta, Rioli etc, but makes elite quick decisions & creates space around himself, in the way Dal Santo & Pendles do. Great disposal too
