I really do think 5 to Freo for Weller and 16 is the go.

16 either becomes someone like Gresham or at a pinch it becomes Carlisle.

Weller, freeman and Carlisle + rice and 2 upgrades is a killer off season.

I'm torn. Can get him much cheaper next year if he holds out for another 12 months.
Carlisle and Weller for 5 isn't too bad though.
Maybe involve our 3rd for Freo's 2nd and send that to Collingwood for Freeman.
Then hold onto 24 and possibly try and move up the order a little.

The question is how desperate are we to get Carlisle.

We put up an offer, and let's say in the likely scenario- essendon is going to refuse everything we offer:-

A) would we let Carlisle go to PSD and potentially get drafted by someone else.
B) give in and pay a high price

It really comes down to whether we are bloody minded enough to risk not getting Carlisle. I would say, we need to be willing to walk away, if the price isn't right. It's as simple as that. If we can't do that, then we will pay overs.

Yep, love your last paragraph, we are not the list management team. Just want some balance, you keep mentioning a "search of this thread", assumptions, common knowledge etc will reveal... a search of this thread & others will reveal apart from a couple of exceptions that people just want to pump themselves up by either saying that they know what is going on or suggesting that what they are proposing is legitimate.

We need to get Carlisle, if we believe that our window opens in say 3 years then he just sets us up. You lock him in and develop Hugh and Paddy and things are looking good.
The whole Carlisle trade is up in the air in regards to what we give up, we won't be ripped off but we will trade for him, unless negotiations totally break down the PSD is not an option (unfortunately IMO).
There's a small chance that IF we trade out 5 we could still get who we want at 5 a little later on in draft.

So my head is telling me the obvious 'fair' deal is Carlisle and 23 to St Kilda, 5 to Essendon. Then we ontrade 23 to Collingwood for Freeman. But that black hole where my heart should be is screaming differently. As Essendope fans have pointed out in their 'HARD TO DEAL WITH' rants, Dodoro may start out strong but he has a massive history of caving. Ryder. Crameri. Monfries. Carlisle is no more going into the draft than Dangerfield. We use that knowledge to nail him to the post. And then there's Collingfilth. The club who notoriously screwed us on the Ball trade. A club where the stench of arrogance can be cut with a knife.

I could live with that. At least we keep a top 10 pick. I'd just hate us to trade away pick 5 and not get a crack at the draft until mid teens. Would seem a waste of pick 5 to me regardless of how could JC could be for our setup

If we have to move our 1st pick it will be for multiple picks, if we back down now we will look weak, and like the old Stkilda, and I just cannot see that happening.

This works out amazingly if we think the player we want (Matho) and Carlisle. However, we'd want to be pretty sure that the teens pick we get would be enough to get Carlisle in essentially a straight swap, and that we get Matho with the new pick. If not, it could be a horrible trade.
