With McLarty getting the axe yesterday it prompted me to go back and have a look at our 2016 post season draft activity.

In "Hinesight" pardon the pun it doesn't make for very good reading at all.

That 2016 national and rookie draft is looking very lean for us.

2016 National draft: McLarty at 30 (gone), Cal Brown - FS bid match at 35 (jury out), Kirby at 50 (gone), Daicos at 57 (jury out)

2016 Rookie draft: Mitch McCarthy (gone), Henry Schade (gone), Liam Mackie (gone), Max Lynch (still on rookie list).

So even though that draft was only 2 years ago we only have 3 players left from 8 selections. Yuk!

The jury is still out on Cal, Josh and Max but at this point in time it's looking like a bit of a fail.

That was 2 Years Ago so Too Early to make any Defiant Calls. We had Players that Started Slow then came on after a Few Years in the System.

Free Agents. Wells been a Bust as Always Nearly Injured. Mayne had a Shocking 1st Season and Good 2nd Season though I don't have him Best 22 with more Players Fit

WHE has been a Massive Win

That whole whole draft is pretty weak, apart from a few at the top end and the occasional latter gem.

Some Good Prospects taken later in Draft:

  • Sam Darcy
  • Shai Bolton
  • Tom Stewart
  • Brendan Cox
  • Esava Ratugolea
  • Rowan Marshall
  • Ben Ronke

Brennan Cox was the one that I can remember wanting at 30 that year. He has shown glimpses at Freo. Will be interesting to see if his opportunities dry up with the arrivals of Hogan and Lobb.

Be interesting to see if this is a weak field draft overall after the top few upper picks.

Looks to be a paucity of quality.

If Brown C and Daicos don’t make it, looks very lean for us.
And the jury is out for the father sons.

Interesting watch

From that 2016 draft it will be hard for C Brown and Daicos to make it in the long run too. Apart from Wells, our midfield has several players that will conceivably hold their positions for the next 3+ years... by then hard calls will have to be made on C Brown and Daicos.

Lynch will also have to be either promoted or cut from the rookie list by then too.

Could feasibly reach 2021/22 and have no survivors from the 2016 draft...

Though we could trade some players in from the Draft like we done with the 2011 Draft

The entire 2016 draft wasnt deep. No need to complain about it.

He's got Casboult written all over him. He can't kick.

You cant review the draft without also reviewing the players we have traded in or bought in via free agency. In 2015 for example we traded away our 2016 first and second rounds to help land Trelaor and Aish. In 2016 we topped up with WHE Dunn Mayne and Wells. Hine knew a year in advance the draft would be weak.

Didn't do well with our picks, but trading our first for Treloar the year before needs to be factored in. In 2015 we also traded StKilda's 2016 second (acquired for Freeman) as part of the Aish trade. What I still don't like though is accepting handful of junk for Witts due to a focus on points for Brown/Daicos, which in the end weren't really needed.

Yeah, Cox is the one that hurts. Looked good as a defender as a junior, but looks the goods forward now too.

Who did we trade in that year? The draft pickings are slim. The biggest mistake appears to be selecting McLarty over Brennan Cox. I know a few were keen on Cox that year.

Its the 2013 draft that has been the killer. Cost one premiership already. Sharenberg and freeman top 10 picks. West Coast have Sheed and barrass taken later who both killed us in the big one. We had them two and West Coast picked our two and result would have been reversed. So many other good players from that draft also.
