Thre is absolutely no reason or excuse , to make speculative or so called , surprise picks in this draft. The talent and character in the top 30 to 40 is sitting there to be selected. The phantom draft experts, so called, are desperately trying to justify their existence . File them under W, for ******s.Self important , self appointed gossips . If we cant get 4 future stars out of this draft, we never will.Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Holy shit.

Really wish we got a pick this year for Hanley instead of 2017. I know we probably would't have got as much potential value draft pick wise if we did but there looks to be some damn good prospects around the 10-16 mark available and looks like we might just miss most of them by our pick 16. Blokes like Berry, Simpkin, Hayward, English, Witherden etc... we might get one but to of those would have been amazing.

Yeah but we might be in exactly the same situation next year where there will be really promising talent at our second pick. Having Port's first rounder stops Ballenden wiping out the rest of our draft.

Sam Landsberger has Griffin Logue as an outside chance for #3...
PICK 3 BRISBANE LIONS

Who’s in the frame: Hugh McCluggage, Ben Ainsworth, Griffin Logue

If McCluggage doesn’t go No.1 he can pack his bags, most likely for the sunshine state. The Lions have long been whetted to Ben Ainsworth and a choice between the pair would be ideal. Griffin Logue is the wildcard, but a long shot. McCluggage’s average of 24 disposals and two goals is a feat never achieved in the AFL, while the powerful Ainsworth showed in the final month he can roll through the midfield.

Meanwhile, at 16 he links us to Venables (starting to become a trend here) and the usual suspects...
PICK 16 BRISBANE LIONS

Who’s in the frame: Daniel Venables, Jarrod Berry, Alex Witherden

Lions hold three of the next seven picks and with academy talls in 2017 should go the best mids. Talk is they like All-Australian Daniel Venables. He is dynamic, powerful and only turned 18 on Saturday.

Plus Ports pick has the potential to be a very low pick IMO.
hard to imagine it being any higher than 10 at worst for mine. I genuinely can't see them playing finals.

We also have Jack Clayton in the academy next year and if (a big if with our academy kids) he continues to develop we might need a reasonable pick to secure him also

I also think there is always a bit of a psychological phenomenon each year where you look at your picks and then look at who is expected to go right before them and then think "dang... if only".

Professionals in the business could tell you,you should hang out with some of us...back to your Phantom drafts.

If you're a professional then I'd suggest we'd be much better off listening to the phantom drafters.

Our link to Venables is becoming a common theme among all the "draft experts", however, they do tend to copy each other at times and it isn't uncommon for clubs to play mind games through the media. Perhaps we actually have our mind on another player, let's say Gallucci and Port want both Venables and Gallucci with their selections so we are putting it out there that we are keen on Venables so Port select him before us and we then get our man Gallucci. Perhaps drawling a long bow there but it is a possibility.

We got pick 22 this year and Port's first round pick next season

I see what you mean but this time next year we could be heading to the draft with two top 6 selections and I think we'll be singing a different tune:D One thing I was really hoping for this trade period was to gain another teams 1st round selection next year. It will be fun barracking against Port every week and heading into next off season with two first rounders already in the bank. Provides us with flexibility a whole year out.

The comment I keep coming back to is the fact the club communicated the desire to have 4 top 25/30 picks across the next two drafts. Predicting we finish bottom four we'll get something in the range of 19-23 in addition to our first and Port's first, which leaves us with one more pick to find... Will be interesting what plans are put in place to secure it.

There's a lot to play out with Tom (and personally I hope he turns it around) but his FA compensation/trade could be the piece of the puzzle

Yeah we'll have options. If Port's pick ends up in the 7-9 range we could trade it for two picks in the teens.

Edit: I love this strategy from the club by the way. We kind of started it last year adding 3 picks inside the top 25 plus getting Mathieson with pick 39 who was rated a top 20 prospect for most the the year so we kind of filled the quota last year. It is a clear plan to add an influx of top level talent over a prolonged period of time(3-4 years). We got a good influx of talent in 2013 with Gardiner, McStay, Taylor, Cutler and NRobbo all selected in the top 35. In 2014 we lost all our early picks to secure DBeams and Bundy but the academy served us well providing us with Dawson and Andrews.

Then last year I mentioned we added Schache, Hipwood, Keays and Mathieson who were all top talents. We are in a fantastic position this year with 4 picks in the top 22 and next year we already have two first rounders so it feels like we are getting the rebuild right this time around investing heavily in the draft and starting to invest heavily in our development personnel off field:thumbsu: We just need to continue to add young talent, develop it properly and the only way is up.

I think Venables is , after McLuggage , more what we need in a prime mover midfielder , a bit of Vossy about his game. Can't see us passing on Ainsworth if McLuggage is gone though , nor should we.We need matchwinners .

A New W***** Is Born .......... Starring Len S(treisand).

Whet is actually a word it's another word for desire it's just Sam trying to look smart again

I'm aware it's a word but not really a synonym for "desire".

And "whetted to" definitely does not makes sense as he used it.

He used it in past tense as Ben Ainsworth who has a desire to play with us but with McLuggage available we may pick him instead but true he should have just used the word desired to

Hate to get all English teacher here but "whetted to" doesn't make sense in any context. "Whetted by..." on the other hand.

It doesn't work, which is massively embarrassing for a guy who writes for a living.

You would do well not to try to support Landsberger here. It's not the winning side.
