Who is to say Ainsworth isn't a better talent and even if he isn't marginally better than McCluggage, how can you even contemplate over looking a player with a desire to join the club and has genuine friendships with existing players at the club, which will only assist in the overall collection of them actually staying at the club long term?

Absolute no brainer if you ask me, but of course the club will inevitably be cute about it's choice.

How do you know McCluggage doesn't have friendships with those guys? He was in the Vic Country squad last year also. Just because it hasn't been stated publicly...

"There's no stand out No.1 after you've done the work during the season and even now after our forensic work, but we will pick the No.1 player in Australia tonight," he said.

"We think McGrath is the best but there's not much in it at all."

Dodoro said the Bombers hope that whoever they select first will eventually offer the club great leadership.

"Wouldn't it be great to walk out with [a] Luke Hodge or Chris Judd tonight to lead your club to greatness?

"All three are quality people from great families," he said.

It may not be an actual confirmation but if they recruit the player they don't rate as the best from the draft with pick one they've got problems.

Does look like we'll actually be able to get McCluggage.

McClug looks a lot like Cotchin in the way he plays. Would be very happy with that.

When I first seen his highlights, his movement reminded me of Lenny Hayes, with the sidesteps, baulks and staying in the contest.

"Brownlow Medallist Cotchin" to you.

I had a dream last night about watching the draft and the top 3 in order was McCluggage, McGrath and Ainsworth. If this comes true I am willing to offer my future telling services for a large fee.

From what I can tell, McCluggage has unequivocally been seen as a better talent than Ainsworth.

I would say that if McC is still available at 3 and we don't take him, it will be seen as the WTF moment of the draft, league-wide.

But wait there, we took the third best talent because he says he likes us more.

probably why we are looking at Jordan Ridley as well. had read very little about Ridley up until recently when he surfaced as a popular tip for us to take. all the stuff i have read re him describe him as an elite kick, one (can't remember which) described him as the best kick in the draft.

I believe Ridley got the best score on the kicking test at the draft combine.

If we do get McCluggage then we will surely be taking a small forward with one of our other 3 picks, Fagan stated thats a priority for him, and none of these phantom drafts have us taking a small forward. If Simpkin is gone at 16 which he probably will, we surely then get Bolton with pick 21/22.

Good call whoever came up with the Cotchin comparison, probably a few clicks quicker too. Hopefully Hugh can become a Brownlow medallist too... ;)
I can see the Cotchin similarities. McCluggage has a superior ability around the goals though and a little more x factor overall.

Thinking out loud...

Brisbane fans tend to adopt an "oh poor us" mentality. Admittedly we have been dealt some crap cards over the last few years but the gods have really looked after us at this year's draft. Usually the top-end of the draft is dominated by poor teams desperate for talent, meaning they take best available without question. This year it's not the case, much to our delight coming in at #3. Essendon are clearly backing themselves to turn things around quickly with their banned players coming back, opting for McGrath over McCluggage. Now I'm not denying that it's a close call between Hugh and Andy but I get the feeling the Bombers think they'll get more immediate results with McGrath and he obviously fills a specific area of need. Meanwhile, GWS is premiership material. They can go for x-factors and difference makers (Tarranto/Ainsworth) who can add something to their attack and give them an edge, rather than investing in longer-term prospects. Which leaves us to get the best-performed player in the draft pool - fact. Hugh's going to take time but for once I think we have to appreciate the fact the cards have fallen in our favour.

Worst dating system ever. It works but the returns are mediocre.

Don't tell my wife.

Agree. There's tinges of Judd to McCluggage too, but the 'Cotchin' shines through more often (body shape, posture, mannerisms, jerky running style).

Who does everyone think Freo will end up taking? That pick could really shape the trajectory of the first round imo.

Funnily enough, the Phantoms all have Ainsworth at 3-5, but most of the big boards seem to have Ainsworth at 5-8.
All of the Phantoms have McCluggage at ~3, but most of the big boards have McCluggage at 1-2.

We need elite talent. You can call this self-pity, but statistically, we have the least drafted talent on our list of any club who hasn't received draft sanctions (depending on what calculation method you use, Adelaide could have lower). We have loads of B graders, we lack elite talent.

We've had retention issues, but we will never get back to being a competitive team by taking less-talented players.

Brodie is a huge chance IMO. Logue as well if for some reason the Suns take him...

On that I have no idea why the Suns are interested in Logue unless they think he could become a midfielder. Thompson, May, Leslie + Day if need be and redrafting Schade is a very good combination to have as key defenders. Seems a strange selection IMO.

My first impression was that he reminded me of Hird* ....... hoping Dedoro feels the same !!

(* Minus the "post playing baggage")
