Venables isn't impacting games enough.

He looks like a superstar for 5 minutes of every game. But don't you want to know what is happening the rest of the time?

Uncanny. I was coming here to say the same thing.

Can Venables find the ball?
He looks good with it and can excite but if he doesn't find it 20+ times a games, will he at the premium level?

I'm liking McGrath more and more but only if he is a ready-made midfielder.
I know he's been playing in the back-line but everything about him screams mid-fielder to me........and a two way midfielder at that.

EDIT: Venables has had an injury interrupted pre-season which surely wouldn;'t have helped

Yes, he is on the bench and up forward. You don't see him coasting around doing nothing or refusing to chase out the back or anything. He broke his leg and wrote off his 2015. He sustained a knee injury in round 1 of the TAC Cup but stayed on and kicked 3 goals. He is obviously getting back to full fitness but he is also a midfielder who excels forward so is more likely to get thrown up there than a midfielder who doesn't kick goals.

I have already claimed that I'm likely wrong but Ainsworth doesn't grab me at all, at our first pick.

He's a quality player but I just see a taller and more mobile back-man quietening him and if he can't function in the centre? I don't know.

EDIT: ...........and LemmingMaster has let us down by selecting him in the Phantom. :)

so we have approximately picks 5, 23, 41 & 59.

how do we hang on to these and add to them? like to see something like 5, 12, 21, 23, 30, 41 & 59. is that asking too much if we trade everitt, touhy, casboult etc? do we look at trading some future picks?

I'd like to see something like 5, 8, 12, 15, 17 & 22 but I'm a complete dreamer. ;)

Maybe he's the real deal but I get concerned with game-breaking skills with the potential to step up as a midfielder. We've been there before with Menz and Yazz. Thus anyone with a 'z' in their nickname, 'Ainz', scares me a little!

Q: Which is the player most likely to become a 250 game at-the-coalface midfielder?
A: Dunno, but get him.

I'm starting to think we should be trading for players and picks in the 2017 draft instead of drafting from the 2016 pool.
I said that about a month ago. If we're trading out players, go for next years picks and go chasing mids next year. Try and retain our picks for this year and just get a couple of talented kids.

Who knows? Even the guys that know.........don't really know.
We here can watch as many videos as we want but what we haven't got, is the ability to interview and get to know the individual.
That would make a huge difference to me and which is why some of our (not just ours, either) selections have posed queries.
Talent is king but character shouldn't be too far behind. Combine the two and you're likely to have a winner on your hands.

Really liking Taranto of late.
Wouldn't mind him in the Navy Blue.........if the right character is there.

Sheesh, venables looks a bit dusty/ danger...want

Looked good in the clinches and was able to fire out some good handball but he is another who's disposal by foot is poor.

Can't tell from that clip how quick he is chasing or trying to run away from an opponent either.

Doesn't scream out "draft me early", would like to see some more highlights though.

Do you then end up with a Vlaustin? A solid player that will only ever be a B grader.

Every player after the first couple is going to have downsides and areas that need improving. Assuming the top 5 goes as predicted Venables for me. What he does is good just needs to do more of it. Not trying to change him as much as some others and the preparation seems impacted by injury.

I really liked everything I saw about Marshall except for one thing.

Every time he took the big overhead mark, he then ambled (ie. quite slowly) out to line-up for the kick but with his back to the play further up the field. If there was a good option elsewhere up field to pass to he would never ever see it.

My guess is that this is due to the fact he only picked up AFL this year and some good coaching & teaching should rectify that team-orientated issue.

Ainsworth looks like he has good upper body definition but a guy of his height will really need that to survive.

Strong overhead and seems to know where the goals are but he badly sprayed the first two shots, one of them was a set from 20m out and he nearly missed the lot, there is an issue there that will need some urgent attention.

I really am struggling to get excited by this chap, there are players of his ilk every year in the draft so it's not like he is a one-off.

Well there is that. But to continue the Richmond references, if you draft on class alone you might end up with Ben Lennon, when the next pick was Carlton's own P-Crippy.

But who am I to judge whether a kid is the next Wingard, who still doesn't get a mountain of possessions but carves up teams regardless...

Lennon was a relatively slow half forward good skill that didn't really go through the midfield. Never wanted when there was a lot of talk about us picking him up. Definitely not the type to select with a first rounder. Plenty better prospects after him. Also the options at pick 5 are different to what is available at pick 12
