Jarryd Roughead's stated ambition to play AFL football again remains a genuine possibility with Hawthorn confirming the four-time premiership star will remain on the club's primary list for 2017.

Contracted until the end of 2018 and placed on the Hawks' long-term injury list in early July, club chief Stuart Fox confirmed that Hawthorn would not seek salary cap relief for the 29-year-old as he continues to focus on his health.

Yeah. Hawks apparently did ask politely earlier this year unofficially if they could get Salary Cap relief (and the JOM trade rumours began around the same time) but dropped the idea apparently.

Hawks would easily be able to fit both players in if they want to go there. Just back end their contracts. Slight increase when Hodge, Gibson and Burgoyne go, major increase when Mitchell and Lewis go.

They will lose also trade players out to get those players in. Suns will want a player and a pick for JOM.

If they went out and replaced like for like then true. JOM/Mitchell aren't a replacement for Roughgead.

Nope, disagree. I feel sorry for Roughead, let me make that clear but salary cap rules are there for a reason. Sympathetically, I'd have no problem with Hawks moving him to the LTI list and promoting a rookie. But they, or any other club should not be allowed to replace someone on the list and essentially pay someone outside the cap...Bloods included!

Nothing to do with rivalries. I just don't understand why the rules should be changed in this instance. I feel terrible for Roughead and those close to him but plenty of players miss entire seasons of football for reasons beyond a clubs control. I don't think the severity or seriousness of the reason for their absence should impact the rules in place.

Either way, it sounds like the AFL and the Hawks aren't going down that road anyway.
