192 is the new 188.

Oh really?

GWS mids:

Shiel > 182cm
Kelly > 184cm
Scully > 181cm
Ward > 187cm
Taranto > 186cm
M.Kennedy > 188cm
Perryman > 184cm
Hopper > 187cm

I guess they didn't get the memo, no flags for them...

200 is the new 194.

Lobb is GWS's only best 22 player over 200cm...

Don't agree about too heavy. It's not like we have five 200s in the top 22.

The concern ought not be about height per se but more relating to pace. Or lack thereof.

Darcy I'm not sure is quick so that's the concern if anything.

Look Cripps needs help esp if BG leaves. Darcy is a big bodied bull.

And recruit players with dash elsewhere.

Need a mix on Inside and Outside.

We are rebuilding and have plenty of holes and depth to fill so we are not in a position to say Darcy doesn't suit our needs lol

Cripps definitely needs help, but LDU is AFL ready and a big bodied inside mid with what sounds like all the attributes we need:

It is well known that contested ball and clearances are a key to winning a football match and Country have plenty of players that can do that. Headlined by Dandenong ball winner Luke Davies-Uniacke – who could well be a top two pick

Players to watch:

Luke Davies-Uniacke – The standout player in the country team, using his big frame to star for the Stingrays early in the year before impressing at school football since. Played in defence last season and has now built up to play a huge role in the Country midfield and expect him to lead by example with the other inside midfielders.

Clark’s Stringrays teammate Luke Davies-Uniacke was the Academy’s top ball-winner, finishing with 22 disposals, 10 contested possessions, five marks and four inside 50s.

A big-bodied midfielder at 188cm and 84kg, Davies-Uniacke was excellent at stoppages to finish with a team-high six clearances.

“He’s a bit of a beast for a young boy,” Wheeler said.

“He stays upright and loves the contest, so that’s probably his biggest strength. He can break away from tackles and run out of a stoppage — they’re the things you want him to do.

“He’s simulated his game on the likes of Josh Kennedy and Dustin Martin in that you’ve got to go forward and kick goals if you’re a midfielder.”

#2 Luke Davies-Uniacke
Inside Midfielder (Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country)
08/06/1999 | 187cm | 85kg
Previous ranking: #2

Scouting notes: Strong bodied inside midfielder who tackles hard and wins the clearances. Has had a fair share of injuries over the last few seasons but appears to be over them. Is the player most ready to go and could walk into AFL from Day 1 with ease. Is powerful and loves the contested situations. Davies-Uniacke is able to stand up when getting tackled and uses his strength to dispose of the ball.

Last month: Continuing to find a stack of the ball for Haileybury College with multiple 30 plus disposal games playing school football. Had 44 disposals against a weak Geelong College outfit and looks primed to star in the Under 18 Championships. Broke tackles with ease on Saturday against Scotch College and a pinpoint left foot kick to switch the ball into the centre corridor was a highlight.

He'll certainly be helping Cripps, he's an accumulator and the left foot kick is important.

Just a quick repot, I will attempt to write something longer tonight.

WA.
2 - Hill: 2018 it will be interesting to see how high this kid will go. Has great speed, clean hands and a one touch player. I would not mind him being a little more selfish infront of goal, but he could be a top 15 pick next year.

9 - Patmore: I'm not seeing AFL qualities at the moment. Missed some shots at goal, kicking below average and decision making was not the best. Disappointing considering I heard good things about him.

11 - England: Has speed to burn, just a pity he seems to burn the ball a little too much.

15 - Ainsworth: I would be watching this kid as I've heard he only just came up to Perth recently. Nice run and carry and one of the few players still running hard in the last quarter when SA were all over us.

22 - Hayden: He was the biggest surprise packet for me. He reminds me a heap of SPP from last year. Just a brute of a kid that charged through people. I was a huge fan for most of the game and then he made a 30m chase down attempt to help stop a goal, that is when he won a few more brownie points. Watch this space... He did not run out the game, so his tank may be lacking.

25 - Allen: Was by far the best forward on the lead today. Strong on the lead and great timing, always creating a target out of defense as well. Still at the end of the day, he is undersized for a forward and not sure the SA defenders were the strongest.

27 Taylor: Best on ground (from a recruitment standpoint). Seemed to play on the resting ruck a lot, outsized but almost did not lose one contest. Great closing speed, amazing marking and can spoil with both hands. Very solid kick as well, stand out player. Does not go to ground and one contest was a highlight. Went to spoil a player, came to ground and someone crumbed the ball, he stayed on his feet, chased him down, dived and almost spoiled the ball but the player was forced to kick it out of the full. Just an amazing sequence that really highlighted his ability.

29 Naughton: Another very solid player for WA, strong over head, great second efforts and I liked his kicking. Great second efforts and the ability to break lines was also a highlight. Spotted up targets a few times with some attacking kicking options.

31 Frampton: A few Frampton fans around these parts, just did not really see it today. Got smashed in the ruck, but when he got his hands to the ball his tap work was very good. Did not massively produce around the grounds, but is a solid kick.

SA

If I am being honest, I did not watch SA as closely.

2 Rankin: Has a great leap if I am not mistaken and very dangerous around goals.

5 Giro: I liked this kid, nice inside and outside work in the midfield. Just a little small as always with SA midfielders, they seem to be a touch small.

14 Hewson: He was a surprise packet for mine, have not heard his name mentioned much but I loved his work down back and then he shifted into the midfield and I like his work in there. Watched one center square take away and picked it up with one hand, spun and shot out a quick handball. Then in the last quarter, squared up a kick across the goals that was amazing. I did see two rather crappy kicks, but on the whole i liked his work.

37 Ballard: This kid has potential, I want to see him more often, but I love his midfield work and around the grounds. Lovely size and I would keep an eye on him in the following televised games.

40 Fogarty: Looks lost in the midfield for mine, so if you require a midfielder then he may not be your man. Up forward he looked okay, but was nothing special. Down back in the last quarter and did his best work there, still I think he lacks effort. His knee was strapped, so maybe he is playing injured, but certainly not screaming top 5 pick for mine. In the midfield he just attempts to use his strength and WA seemed to stop him constantly with strong tackles.

49 CCJ: MONSTER last quarter, WA just could not get passed him. Strong hands and while his kicking looks hideous, I guess it end up getting to its location... I still think he will struggle with that kicking action at AFL level.

Here is a post from a Port supporter.

SA absolutely dominated that last quarter. CCJ and Fogarty went behind the ball and SA locked the ball in their forward 50 for the whole quarter. WA's smaller forward line had no answer for CCJ's marking power. Maybe he needs to play CHB?

James Rowe was in everything in the last quarter but he is small and not the best ball user.

As a tall wingman Ballard impressed me. Strong over head and runs to the right spots. Might be a touch on the slow side.

Jackson Edwards looks like a solid midrange prospect.

Best WA:
Hill, Taylor, Ainsworth, Naughton, Patmore, Roe, Allen

SA:
Hewsen, Ballard, Crowden, Rankine, Coleman-Jones, Edwards

Most draftable players:
Taylor - looks a gun full back. Good size, good skills and physically dominant. Best KPP on the ground by some margin.

Hill - very small but has all the tricks. Elite skills and has no problems finding the ball. Could be anything. *edit* not eligible until next year apparently... if he could just grow a little bit.

Ainsworth - as I said earlier he plays Port Adelaide football. Probably not dissimilar to a left footed Joe Atley. His running goal was the highlight of the game.

Allen - kicked 3 and hit the post with a snap. Leads up at the ball carrier and was a focal point at CHF. A little raw but the talent is there.

Ballard - as mentioned above big winger with a thumping kick and strong overhead. Played 4 good quarters.

Coleman-Jones - smashed by Taylor when he played forward (won't be an orphan there) and did nothing with his tap work but had a big say in SA getting back in the game when he moved loose behind the ball. Huge last quarter.

Fogarty - must have had a very off day because he looked nothing like a number 1 pick to me. Big kid, not sure he's a good footballer or athlete though.

Hewsen - started at half back and played well there, moved into the midfield and played even better. Just looks to have very clean hands and good composure. SA's best on the day.

31 Frampton: A few Frampton fans around these parts, just did not really see it today. Got smashed in the ruck, but when he got his hands to the ball his tap work was very good. Did not massively produce around the grounds, but is a solid kick.
Clearly Frampton did not Come Alive today (apologies in advance).

Can't recall where I saw it and it may have been from a Carlton poster that described Fogarty as Lou Ferrigno beating up on little kids.

Thought that was pretty funny and somewhat apt.

He tried on a number of occasions to beat up on WA kids and just got tackled and taken to the ground. SA don't have the best team, but there will be another 3 times I get to view Fogarty, so who knows, I could have seen a bad game.

As I said before today's game, Fogarty probably isn't the mid we need. I just don't like the idea of two 193cm+ mids. Starting to lean more towards LDU now.

Nothing you've posted makes any sense whatsoever, completely and utterly not connected by any sense or logic to my posts. Keep up the good work.

That's because what I posted is filled with reality and logic while yours was filled with fantasy rubbish.

192cm is the new 188cm? LOL what does that even mean? Makes no sense at all when you look at the best team in the comp and not one of their best midfielders is anywhere near 192cm.

So how you draw this conclusion that 192cm is the revolutionary new desirable height for the modern midfielder is pure fantasy.

Despite the fact LDU hasn't played yet. That makes a lot of sense lol

What do you mean he hasn't played? He's played plenty of times, we don't need to wait for this weekend to see what he's capable of.

BTW, Fogarty didn't really do anything to convince me, by all reports he was average at best today, particularly in the midfield...

About 193cm would be, actually, and a player that can play in multiple positions. The point is not that players have to be taller to play in the midfield but rather that already having Cripps in the side shouldn't prevent us from drafting midfielders above a certain height. The average AFL footballer is getting taller by the year.
